The Divorced Kids' Bill of Rights It seems like everyone has a Bill of Rights these days. All Americans have one in their Constitution. The Geneva Convention has a Bill of Rights for prisoners of war. And if you Google 'Bill of Rights,' well, it looks like just about everybody has one: doctors' patients, children, goldfish, gerbils. . . . The point is, I think kids with divorced parents deserve a Bill of Rights too. In this section, you'll find some basic rights that you have with your family and that your parents should respect. Read over them, think about them, and sit down with your parents and tell them to read them too. Share them with your parents early on and discuss them together, and start figuring out how they are going to make sure they respect these inalienable rights. I. The Right to Be Safe and Feel Safe The most important thing in a divorce with kids is that they feel safe and secure. That means saying something if you're home alone too much, if a relative or stepparent says something to you that isn't right, or if they treat you in a way that makes you uncomfortable. If there ever is a time you don't feel safe, tell your parents, and if you can't tell them, tell a counselor or tell a friend. This is your most important right. II. The Right to Awareness You have a right to know what's going on. Your parents should not lie to you or hide the truth from you about anything to do with you. This does not mean, however, that they have to tell you everything. Some things should remain private between your parents until you are older, and until they feel they want to tell you. For instance, they don't have to reveal to you the intimate details of their arguments about child support. But if they're having a discussion about your schedule, you have the right to know and to make your voice heard. III. The Right to Counseling Divorce can be very disempowering. It can make you feel like you don't have a say and don't make a difference, and that's exactly where a counselor comes in. A counselor should be someone whom you can talk to privately, without your parents there, and who can help you with your situation. When I was eleven, I'd had enough with my parents' problems, and I met with my middle school counselor, Dr. Gold. We talked once a week or so about how I felt concerning my parents' situation, and he helped me realize that I have a voice that my parents should hear. Without him, I don't think I would have had my say until I was older. He was instrumental in helping me tell my parents how I felt and getting them to respect my opinion. School counselors are not the only people you can talk to. Adult friends of the family who are unbiased, or the parents of good friends of yours, are also good people to talk to. All of this brings up an important issue. If you are ever harmed or threatened in any way, or you don't feel safe with a parent, the most important thing you can do is to talk to someone who can help you. Above everything else is Right Number I: The right to be safe and to feel safe. Remember that. IV. The Right to Be Heard Sometimes, when your parents are trying to sort out what they think is best for you, they can forget to listen to the most important person: You! Sometimes, you know what you need better than they do, and they'll forget to ask. If you can't get them to listen to you by yourself, it's important to have someone―a counselor or a friend―talk for you. That way you can make sure that you have a say, and that your parents really know what you need. V. The Right to Be Your Own Person Before your parents were divorced, there was you, your mom, your dad, and the other people in your family. The same is true now. Your parents have to respect your right to feel the way you feel. Your parents will very likely start dating after they are divorced. This is normal. I've seen my father date and marry twice after my parents split. Trust me, you'll get used to it. But with all of that comes the fact that you are not a tool for your parents to get dates. In dealing with stepparents, or the people your parents are dating, your rights stand. They are still in effect. It's important to set boundaries with your parents' friends. You must tell both your parents and their friends when those boundaries are crossed. If those boundaries are crossed in a major way, and you don't feel safe, tell a counselor. Plain and simple. VI. The Right to Be Neutral Your parents, more likely than not, will argue about things when they get divorced. Again, this is normal. They will fight, and they might even say things about each other that aren't so nice. Sometimes, they may tell you about these things and ask you how you feel about them. The long and the short of it is that you don't have to say a thing. You have the right, first of all, to not hear any of it. If you don't want to hear about how they feel about each other, then you don't have to. Tell them to stop, tell them you don't want to hear it. If they don't stop, leave and tell someone else. Also remember that you never have to choose sides. I found it interesting and very informative to hear how my mother felt about my father and vice versa. I learned a lot from it. I learned that if I acted like either parent in a way that reminded the other of the reason they got divorced, they'd get angry really fast, which was a good thing to know. Regardless of all of that, the important thing is that you don't have to take a side with either parent. Be Switzerland. Stay neutral. VII. The Right to Private Communication You can say anything to anyone, without worrying about someone else listening. This means that if you want to be on the phone, then you can ask your parent to leave the room. That means you can write e-mails without your parent over your shoulder. That means that when you meet with a counselor or friend, you have privacy, unless you want your parent(s) there. For the rest of your young adult life, I think you'll find these rights to be a useful guide for knowing where you stand and for knowing what you have to put up with and what you don't. ©2007. This is a great guide for teens/ or kids going thru their parents divorce. It gives them a special Kids Bill of Rights that explains such things as..they have the right to feel safe and loved no matter what...and they have the right NOT to be used as a pawn or a spy by one or the other parent.Best of all its written in a way that keeps the child engaged! Keeps them reading because as it says..this is a book for THEM not their parents. I do recommend this as a great tool to help a child thru this difficult time!

Real life issues well written and clearly stated. This book is ideal for children and teens dealing with the life changes that accompany divorce.

"The Bright Side" is a fresh take on the how-to genre. This is a book geared at children whose parents are going through divorce, but instead of giving them strict advice to follow (kids don't want rules, anyhow!), Max Sindell offers a different perspective. While admitting that being a child of divorce can be challenging, his examples prove that those challenges can be exciting (traveling, having a new schedule, welcoming new family) and ultimately the challenges can make the child become more independent young adult. His Bill of Rights is a fun, special piece, helping kids to remember that they don't have to deal with divorce alone or as a mediator. As their parents are benefiting from the situation, Sindell assures his readers that they, too, should gain some new experience and perspectives. Sindell is neither patronizing nor condescending -- he balances personal success stories with a calm assurance that divorce will certainly have rough patches. Overall, this is a great suggestion for any child dealing with divorce as it's helpful and adventurous without being long-winded!

As a parent and a grandparent, I find this to be a very useful book for all kids going through divorce of their parents. It is excellently presented, and useful. I plan to give this book to any child who would benefit from the author's personal experience.

I am glad the authors kept to the turn of the century time period of the original Sydney Taylor books instead of "modernizing" it. That and the fact this review form won't allow me to give no stars at all, is the only reason I gave it even one. This book is so brief and simple, actually "dumbed down" very much from the way Sydney Taylor wrote her stories. There is no substance, no real story line, not one thing to hold a child's interest, as if it was meant to be read to a one or two year old. It was a great waste of thirteen dollars to add it to my original collection that I read when I was six or seven years old. It could have been a wonderful book for people who remember and love the originals as well as a great way for today's children to learn while enjoying it. The book had so much promise, but it didn't deliver. It saddens me that, like so much else in our world today, this book is severely dumbed down instead of being an interesting, entertaining learning experience.

All my children and grandchildren have been raised with the All of a Kind Family books. (I grew up with them as well). They were thrilled to receive this addition to the series (I was a bit skeptical but took a chance). The 8 yr old took it to school to share during Chanukkah (and she NEVER does that lol).

Gifted to my niece whose parents are of different faiths from one another

I was so thrilled to see this book. I saw in in my library but haven't bought it yet. This book is not a substitute for the original All-of-a-Kind-Family books. The book is brief and simple and written for a younger child. If you want to call that dumbed down - so be it. For me, an adult that fondly remembers the originals - it is wonderful. For a child that's not old enough to read the other books, it is a good introduction. This makes my heart glad.

This first in a restaging of the All-of-a Kind Family stories offers a rich and inviting homage to the classic picture books, while inviting a new generation of readers to its pages.

What a lovely addition to my Hanukkah collection this book is! It's a quiet story of family love as the children help their mother make latkes for the evening celebration. The youngest child is frustrated that she is not allowed to help with the preparations, but the resolution offered by a loving papa ends the story happily. The vibrant pictures are the kind a child will pore over. Parents and grandparents will delight in meeting the All of A Kind Family girls again!

Sadly, this is the worst Hanukkah story I have ever read. This story sends a terrible message to children, that they can’t help in preparing for Hanukkah and can only light candles. And worse it sends the message that preparing for Hanukkah and making Latkes is dangerous! Even the illustrations are sad and depressing. I will be replacing this book in our schools library with something more empowering and celebratory.

I'm sorry to say this but I just can't get past the illustrations. They clash terribly with my personal images of these beloved characters and I wouldn't want my grandchildren imagining them this way.

I had high hopes for this book, given that I consider Dogfish Head one of the two best brewpub chains in America (the other being Mountain Sun in Colorado). I expected the book to focus on Sam Caligione's experience creating Dogfish Head, but his story is buried in bromides for would-be entrepreneurs. This leads to a disjointed, incomplete, redundant and non-chronological story. This is a shame because Sam is a good writer with an even better story to tell.One detail that I found curious: Sam mentions Donald Trump (I assume his book the "Art of the Deal") as one of his chief inspirations (p. 26). Really??? I had just entered U.C. Berkeley as a card-carrying Republican when the book came out and I assumed it was about a buffoonish used car salesman. The author of the book, Tony Schwartz, has admitted that every deal he wrote about was a sham. Harvard's negotiation journal just announced that not a single article has referenced the book in the past ten years!

I must admit that looking at the book title after reading it, it does hint that it is about how to build a business, any business, that happened to be written by a successful entrepreneur from the brewing business. My wrong interpenetration of the book title led me to think it will either consist of a bottom-line tips of the do and don't in the brewery business, or give a detailed and consistent story-line of how Dogfish became. While there is some sort of high-level story line about Dogfish head, for the do and don't an exhaustive cherry picking is required.Having said that, with Dogfish head the world is defiantly a better place...Cheers!

Great Book for any person wanting insight into entrepreneurship. It is a great laugh on several occasions too. Sam is a hero to us in the homebrew world and it is really cool to have him right alongside me in the business world too!

I LOVED this book. It is both entertaining and informative. Sam Calagione is a great writer, and you feel like you know him by the time you finish the book. He offers some wonderful advice and tells great stories. I highly recommend this book for anyone who either owns a small business or wishes to start one. Does not have to be a brewery...

It's a good book to read, and has good advice, but it is not an instruction manual for opening a brewery.

The book provoked a great deal of thoughts for me. I enjoyed the writer's wit, the recounting of his experiences, and the concepts/values he proposed are good advice for anyone to follow regardless of one's vocation.I had read other's reviews prior to purchase and understand their reticence to give a greater rating. Those persons, I suspect, were hoping for a very nuts and bolts how-to guide on brewery start-up. They were disappointed. I did, however, find the substance within this volume applicable to Business and to brewing. Sam's concepts are grounded in fundamental values designed for the success of persons willing to walk a narrow (albeit unconventional) path.I find myself wanting to know more about the writer and what is more, to Know this interesting man.

Out of the half dozen or more brewing books I own this was the easiest to read and related to. I thought that Business For Punks would be my favorite, but this one ended up being it so far.

I really liked reading the book and am a pretty big dogfish head fan. When I looked into this book I thought it would be more of a outline and a guide book on opening a brewery than anecdotal tales from Sam. If you are looking for a book to help you figure out what you need to be a successful brewery than I would recommend you look for another book. If you are just looking for a book that tells you stories on some of the weirder hurdles that dogfish head had to contend with or just some more knowledge on dogfish head ideology and guidelines then this is your book.

This simple guide is more than as simple and even less than informative. It is written as if it was an article in a medical magazine in some ways but less informative than a wiki. The writing is repetitive and missing details of symptoms. It completely misses the human factor altogether.

This book was very informitive and easy to read. I believe I have a clearer picture oh what to expect.

WOW. What a great book and is worth a read. It’s sincere and everything that you would hope it would be. There are two aspects to this book, one is a candid conversation between a mother and a son, and the other is…well, a lot of the family gossip. It mirrors the conversations that many people hope that they have once in their lifetime with their own eldest family member, when they themselves are adults.It is a conversation, but done in the style of Anderson Cooper, almost being his own investigative journalist regarding his own family. However, unlike situations in which Cooper simply asks questions and keeps moving, he discusses his own responses, his own feelings, and explores elements from his own background and experiences. A great example is Cooper mentioning how he was afraid to tell his mom he was gay because of being afraid of how she would react because of the rumors that her own mother was gay. Instead the mother essentially responds with, “Yeah, I knew, all your friends were gay,” and does the motherly thing of refocusing on the question of her son regarding her own mother and discusses her mother’s sexuality and her own views on sexuality, which have changed over the years and views that it is fluid.There is also some really unique insights into the different family members, providing a history of each one as Anderson asks, going so far as to describe houses and ways that money was made. There is also a slight element of mother’s give a damn being broken at 91 and even letting her son know about sex and the firs time she no longer had to fake an orgasm, which was one of the attractive aspects of who she dated. This is also couched in the context on reflections of her own insecurities being a young girl and growing up, as well as why she stayed in some horrible marriages.The writing style of this book is easy and fluid. There are interjections in-between conversations that give a quick and easy reference to the backstory of a particular family member or some occasions of the family in general. There are also points where Cooper mentions that he watches a YouTube video that has a family member, or his mother, and it’s actually quite easy to look up that information and follow along. The responses of Cooper are often shorter, but pull in normal colloquialisms, something that shows a bit of a generational divide the two, such as YouTube; whereas his mother may respond with a quote, or just simply go off of the comment mentioned.Vanderbilt’s responses are much more elaborate, detailed, and a bit of a train of thought around an initial point Cooper asks and that his mother makes a winding way in telling a story, but this is for the best because it is in this portion you can see a lot of recollections about her life, where she has been, and her understanding in hindsight. There is a lot of brutal honesty as well, such as her own insecurities early in life, acknowledgement she probably was not the best parent, recognition that she and Cooper probably would have been closer if he was a daughter, the death of her husband (Cooper's father), and later the death of Coopers brother, Carter (her son).A great book all around, it gives insight into the family’s meeting of one another, Coopers’ own father, and clarifications on his own understanding of family gossip from years of growing up. There is a lot that may mirror experiences that some adults have been fortunate enough to have snippets of with a family member, but is the extended version of insight into a family that probably has a lot more gossip and rumors surrounding it than one’s own and a few more trips to Europe on whims than most people experience in a lifetime.

I love this book. I live in the Palm Springs desert and have always looked up to Anderson. My Mother and I had a very good relationship, but cancer took her away at 79. I just loved the exchanges between Anderson and Gloria. It was touching on so many levels. I am also a gay man and my Mother was very supportive me of as well. I was a teacher for 39 years. I would give this book and its two authors an A++ !!!Ray M. Smythe

No matter how close we are to our parents (as I was to my father who passed away last year at 98) there are still things not said and subjects not fully probed. For example my father had an older brother who like Rosemary Kennedy was born retarded due to a birth accident and also like her was lobotomized and placed in a facility. Although I was nine when he died I never met him and my father and I never really talked about it (though it was always on his mind).After almost losing his very famous (and very illustrious) mother Gloria Vanderbilt just before her 91st birthday, news anchor Anderson Cooper embarks on his toughest interview via a year-long email exchange. They discuss everything (sometimes to the point of exhaustion): her very tough childhood (including the famous custody trial); her four marriages (Anderson was her last child by her last husband); his father’s sudden and tragic death when Anderson was 10 and how he and his mother began the process of forming a long-overdue mother-son relationship; Anderson’s sexuality (a subject totally missing from his original memoir); and most tragically his older brother’s suicide.I recommend this book with reservations. While touted as an unscripted email exchange it does not read that way. Gloria tends to explain events with so much background (many of which were already covered in her many autobiographies) that one wonders why Anderson Cooper, an award-winning newsman, did not already know about them. Plus there is so much repetitive detail that you really need a prior interest in both Gloria and Anderson to get through it. But many will find its unique approach both interesting and perhaps cathartic. Personally I wished I had this same exchange with my father.

Interesting premise for the book -- an interview conducted over the span of a year by Anderson Cooper with his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt.I thought that the strongest part of the book was the life of Gloria from the time she was born until her first marriage. Considering that she had a childhood and teen years that were bereft of actual "family" -- as in -- a mother and father from whom she could receive love, care, guidance etc. it's amazing that her later life wasn't more messy than it was. It was definitely interesting to learn her feelings on the "trial of the century" and being known as the "poor little rich girl." It was equally interesting and I thought, quite honest of her, to admit that when she grew older and attempted to "connect" with her mother that she found it impossible to do it because they literally did not know one another and could not find a way to discuss what had happened between them when the trial occurred and she was a child of ten caught in the middle of the situation between her mother and her aunt.I felt that the last section of the book was less compelling because it went away from actions and instead was more about philosophy of life, love etc on the part of Gloria. I thought that Anderson Cooper, too, was quite brave to step forward and speak about his own life considering that he is in the middle of living his life as a public figure on television whereas his mother is nearing the end of hers and it's not as difficult to speak about painful experiences once they have passed as opposed to when you are younger and still facing them each day.Overall it is an interesting book and I think that both parties tried to be as honest as possible in their responses and comments.Overall, I enjoyed the book
