All-of-a-Kind Family Hanukkah, by Emily Jenkins

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 3-Four-year-old Gertie, the youngest of five sisters growing up on the Lower East Side of New York City in the beginning of the 20th century, is frustrated that she can't help prepare the potato latkes for the first night of Hanukkah. Charlotte gets to peel the potatoes and Sarah grates them; Henny chops the onions; and Mama cracks the eggs and adds the salt and matzo meal. Big sister Ella picks up Gertie so she can see the two big frying pans hiss and smoke on the stove, but Mama is afraid that the grease will spit and burn her and sends Gertie to her room. Discouraged and angry, Gertie hides under the bed until Papa comes home and lures her out with gingersnaps. Though she isn't old enough to help make the latkes, she is old enough to help Papa light the menorah. And at dinner, Mama gives Gertie the first latke to try and it tastes "of history and freedom, of love and crispy potato." Zelinsky's expressive and textured illustrations done in yellow, blue, and red earth tones with thick, bold lines perfectly capture the love and warmth of a large family despite the modest and overcrowded living quarters. The back matter also provides information about Sydney Taylor, the author of the original All-of-a-Kind Family (first published in 1951), life on the Lower East Side, and additional background about Hanukkah. VERDICT While readers need not be familiar with the classic series, generations of parents who grew up with this unforgettable immigrant family will certainly welcome this new picture book as the perfect way to introduce these memorable characters to the next generation of readers.-Rachel Kamin, North Suburban Synagogue Beth El, Highland Park, ILα(c) Copyright 2011. I am glad the authors kept to the turn of the century time period of the original Sydney Taylor books instead of "modernizing" it. That and the fact this review form won't allow me to give no stars at all, is the only reason I gave it even one. This book is so brief and simple, actually "dumbed down" very much from the way Sydney Taylor wrote her stories. There is no substance, no real story line, not one thing to hold a child's interest, as if it was meant to be read to a one or two year old. It was a great waste of thirteen dollars to add it to my original collection that I read when I was six or seven years old. It could have been a wonderful book for people who remember and love the originals as well as a great way for today's children to learn while enjoying it. The book had so much promise, but it didn't deliver. It saddens me that, like so much else in our world today, this book is severely dumbed down instead of being an interesting, entertaining learning experience.

All my children and grandchildren have been raised with the All of a Kind Family books. (I grew up with them as well). They were thrilled to receive this addition to the series (I was a bit skeptical but took a chance). The 8 yr old took it to school to share during Chanukkah (and she NEVER does that lol).

Gifted to my niece whose parents are of different faiths from one another

I was so thrilled to see this book. I saw in in my library but haven't bought it yet. This book is not a substitute for the original All-of-a-Kind-Family books. The book is brief and simple and written for a younger child. If you want to call that dumbed down - so be it. For me, an adult that fondly remembers the originals - it is wonderful. For a child that's not old enough to read the other books, it is a good introduction. This makes my heart glad.

This first in a restaging of the All-of-a Kind Family stories offers a rich and inviting homage to the classic picture books, while inviting a new generation of readers to its pages.

What a lovely addition to my Hanukkah collection this book is! It's a quiet story of family love as the children help their mother make latkes for the evening celebration. The youngest child is frustrated that she is not allowed to help with the preparations, but the resolution offered by a loving papa ends the story happily. The vibrant pictures are the kind a child will pore over. Parents and grandparents will delight in meeting the All of A Kind Family girls again!

Sadly, this is the worst Hanukkah story I have ever read. This story sends a terrible message to children, that they can’t help in preparing for Hanukkah and can only light candles. And worse it sends the message that preparing for Hanukkah and making Latkes is dangerous! Even the illustrations are sad and depressing. I will be replacing this book in our schools library with something more empowering and celebratory.

I'm sorry to say this but I just can't get past the illustrations. They clash terribly with my personal images of these beloved characters and I wouldn't want my grandchildren imagining them this way.
