...I would not have touched this book. It's about the size of those paper folders you use in school, and about as useful. I do not understand why every single art book under the sun has to have a color wheel and/or color mixing guidelines for the first 20 pages, but in a book this thin, it doesn't leave room for much else. The picture on the cover is about all you get.

I'm into painting lately and i want to inprove my technics in oil & Acrylic so i searched in amazon for books and foung this one.When i looked at the first pages i liked it and decided to buy it.

Apart from the grammatical gaffe on the front cover, which I shall swiftly pass over, I enjoyed this book. It's all about learning to paint in oil and acrylic and offers good, step-by-step instruction. This is a large format book that is well laid out, gives guidance on color and basic techniques. There follows several paintings with varied instructions. The first oil is by Tom Swimm, a landscape with haystacks has 8 step by step instructions. The next a very detailed acrylic by Tom with only 5 instructions. I found this one difficult to follow and this one is certainly not levelled at the beginner. The book is instructive and interesting in that it explains the artist's approach and methods. For those who are still unsure of themselves and are happy to copy, this is a teaching guide, but eventually you have to observe and work out your own compositions. Use it as an aid but not as the be all and end all. This review first appeared on Karen Platt's book review website.
