Michael Troyan has worked as an archivist at the Walt Disney and Warner Bros. studios as well as a consultant and film historian elsewhere. He is the author of A Rose For Mrs. Miniver: The Life of Greer Garson, and has contributed to numerous books about Hollywood, and particularly Disney, history. He lives in Northern California. As both a HOLLYWOOD historian and someone who actually worked at 20th Century-Fox, let me say that this book by Michael Troyan, Jeffrey Paul Thompson and Stephen X. Sylvester, is an absolute treasure...I make that statement unbiased, as I have never heard of or met these gentleman, but I do know the studio very, very well having spent 25 years there.Through this book TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX A Century of Entertainment, you too will come to know this studio very well. It has everything for both the movie buff and the novice. Incredible photos and 700 pages of detailed research, document the incredible history of this fine studio with the world famous searchlight logo.It will give the reader a studio tour that shows so much, from its creation to the present day. But for me, it was the rare "behind-the-scenes" photos of the studio sets and productions that really bring back the memories. You would never know or appreciate just what a fantastic studio lot it was visiting Century City in West Los Angeles today... Having sold off their back lot decades ago, and with all the skyscraper development since, this book is the only one that will show you all the iconic areas of western towns, churches, mansions, city streets, castles, lakes etc., that defined the only HOLLYWOOD studio purpose built for sound. It was MOVIETONE CITY, and Fox developed the sound system that became the industry standard.I produced a two-hour DVD history of the studio to celebrate it's 75th anniversary... This book though, goes way beyond that as it will give you many more happy hours when it brings back the memories of so many iconic movies that were made there!

Wow! From the outside, the size of it is like a college textbook. Inside it's packed with lots of photos and text. Of all the recent studio books, this one seems to be the most comprehensive.

Excellent overview of the history of this great movie studio; in addition to synopses of films themselves, there are numerous hard-to-find photos and texts of the making of some of the best films as well as photographic shots of the studio premises and soundstages, interactions with some of the stars and directors. This book does a great job of covering a very diverse field of public health. I actually decided to keep this book because I thought it such a great read (I am a medical student and public health student in infectious disease). Although this is clearly not a comprehensive guide of all things environmental and occupational health, it does manage to provide a satisfying level of knowledge a great many topics, and it certainly leaves me with the desire to explore topics further. The writing style is straightforward and informative and I never felt that the author was providing excessive minutia or was being at all tangential. A great read and a great addition to the collection of anybody interested in public health or even medicine.

I like that this book is small. It was easier to read and get through when the pages are smaller. It helps me to think I'm not reading a text book.

This book was cheaper than what my school's bookstore charged. Came in very good condition. Loved it!

The supplemental online chapter notes and quizzes are very helpful.

The book is very outdated and doesn't contain anything from the 2000s. The online chapter summaries are very helpful. The book has a lot of information but not very pertinent to today. It might've been great in the early 90s but for today, purchase a newer, updated book.

This map has a LOT of detail for a flip mat. I know people don't necessarily like these and many of the 5E players I know prefer TOTM to minis. I like using miniatures and this fit into my campaign perfectly. The detail in the map is FANTASTIC and the surface, as is usual with the Flip-Mat Classics, is easy to use and durable. If you want a simple dungeon to run but don't want to mess with drawing it out or customizing it, this is it!

I like the flip mats although I do have to say it might be better for Paizo to make individual buildings and things that we can lay on a flip-mat so that we can vary the setting. That is the single biggest drawback to using these items.

I am a solo backpacking traveler--more than 24 third-world countries on four continents. Two of my sojourns have been to Africa and so I understood well the trials and tribulations of Grant--the reasons for his choosing his route and destinations and the inevitable discombobulated nature of his trip. I know full well that no travel in Africa is ever linear, coherent or predictable no matter how well thought out or planned. For some unfathomable reason it is the nature of Africa, as no other place in the world, to confound those who visit and stymy those who search for answers there to grand questions and attempts to glean its soul.What happened to Grant also happened to me and countless others. Prior to going there, after extensive research on my intended route, I thought I knew what to expect but once there I immediately found myself adrift in a completely alien world with no direction and no way home. My mind was constantly enveloped in a fog as if I were in a dream-- I was unable to think clearly and found myself always trapped in the present with no consciousness of past or future--and so I drifted from one event to the next-- never knew where I would find myself next--never knew where I should go or what I should do. I might have been there forever but as all dreams end, so too did my stay there. How I managed to hang onto enough sanity, reason and strength to do what I had to do to leave I do not know. Grant's experience seemed to mirror mine in all respects--incoherent, discombobulated and without direction. Any third world vagabond would enjoy and identify with his account and recognize it as authentic.The quote I most liked was Grant's reference to Raymond Aron's thought that "Optimism is usually the effect of an intellectual error." How true--particularly in Africa. A thoroughly organized and linear story, as it is thought most good books should be, it was not--but it was refreshingly real.It is true that Africa is the most beautiful, most intriguing, most spellbinding, place on Earth and once you've been there you will always return---but Africa will, in the end, break your heart."And There I Was" by DH Koester

Okay, now that I've gone on record on Amazon about how actively I disliked Julian Smith's Crossing the Heart of Africa — an award winner? really ? — I feel it only right to explain exactly WHY I enjoyed Crazy River so much. Comparing the two, to me, is like comparing Paul Theroux with a college undergraduate essaying his way through first-year creative writing.Grant is acerbic, witty and a keen observer of human nature. I have traveled extensively in Tanzania and on Zanzibar; Grant got Zanzibar spot on. And not a romanticized, 19th century version of Zanzibar, either, but Zanzibar as it is in 2015.Grant has an expedition in mind — he's quite up-front about how quickly his plans fall apart, and his own shortcomings as a would-be explorer. Even though his plans fall apart, though, he stays on a linear course. Crazy River has a genuine beginning, middle and a real end. That ending, in Rwanda, following a face-to-face sit-down interview with Rwandan president Paul Kagame, immediately after being overwhelmed at the genocide memorial in Kigali, reads both true and profound, and is not at all what you might expect.I cannot overemphasize how much I enjoyed Crazy River, and how much I appreciated being taken on Grant's journey with him. And make no mistake: This book is so sharp, so keenly observed, so well-written, so fascinating in every respect, that as a reader you are genuinely there with him, every step of the way.I know a little bit of Africa. Not much, just what I've seen with my own eyes and experienced myself. I know people — expats and locals both — who live in Tanzania, Kenya and other countries, and have either chosen to make East and Central Africa their home, or have lived there all their lives.For me, Crazy River captures this corner of Africa exactly as it is, today, right now, in this day and time. It's neither an optimistic nor a pessimistic view. Rather, it feels simply . . . honest.I haven't read any of Grant's other work. Based on this book alone, though, he strikes me as mad talented.

Grant is a very witty writer. His journey through Tanzania was fascinating and frequently funny. Once he is in Rwanda, things turn to a far more serious level, with discussions about the genocide of the early 90's. His interview with President Paul Kigane was very thorough and inspired me to read much more about this fascinating multi-layered president. Some call him a benevolent tyrant who is also ultimately responsible for the deaths of thousands, all in the interest of preserving the government and protecting thousands of its citizens.This is a book well worth reading, especially if one is planning to visit Africa, which I am. I also have started reading some of Richard Grant's other books.

One of the sad things about re-publishing a book (first by Sheed Ward in 1960, now by Sophia Institute in 2017) is that the product, for all practical purposes, appears to be very recent. It is an older perspective of Christ's Passion and Death. Simply put, there is much more known today about this subject matter, so I would suggest that since the new publisher does not make that clear on the cover (it is only when you open to the first few pages and see the Imprimatur was granted in 1959) that this is a bit deceptive. It's sad to pay money for material that, which never is truly outdated, it can be updated - as one disappointed customer describes about the information revealed very recently about the Shroud of Turin. I find myself noting facts that I have read from other more recent biblical exegeses of the Holy Bible by popular Catholic authors that present a much more comprehensive understanding of the subject matter. Much more is known today archaeologically than in 1959. That's 59 years ago! I don't know that I would buy it again, but I will finish it since I paid for it.

I initially bought this book with the intention of nursing it as my Lenten read. The book was so engaging, I found myself staying up hours after my normal sleep time just to read "one more chapter." The book is filled with deep insights that remain true to the gospel without pandering to sentimentality. It presents a stark glimpse into the electric charged political atmosphere of Jerusalem at the time. It also presents a touching glimpse into Jesus' last hours. When the tomb is sealed at the books end, I found myself longing for the Resurrection, the true purpose of The Passion. The book truly drew me closer to the sacrifice our Lord and Saviour endured for our sins.It is an absolute must read.

This book is as good as any book have read on this subject. I was continually amazed at the new ideas and historical way the book dealt with this most significant event. I found myself saying to people, “Did you know that....” about several passages from the book. I have placed many markers in the book for later reference. The book is not only about the time period but traces ideas back to the Old Testament as well as relating their importance to us today. It deals with the people and groups involved and what they were thinking and how that prompted their actions. It also discusses the place of and the how of this awful act against the Lord.The writing style is concise and easily understood. It is a great introduction or is viable for someone who has extensive experience with the topic. I recommend this book highly!
