Good reference.

Very good reference for construction

This is an excellent update of a book I originally received in 1976. The authors have updated it extensively and added all of the needed new information for associations, government & regulatory agencies and building codes. This should be an essential easy-to-read resource for anyone in the industry. Perhaps especially younger engineers & contractors needing a reference to get them up to speed with the terms used in our industry for 50+ years. I also like that it is soft cover and large format with whitespace for notes...much better than a small size hard cover in small print. Knowledge is expensive but this much in one volume is a bargain. Well done gentlemen!

I've had no formal training in the construction trade consequently this is a great reference book for me. As an owner builder I have been using the 1980 addition of this book. This edition is concise, well-organized, easy-to-read, and some humor, (look up mistake), and less than 30 bucks a good value.

A resource like this is long overdue. It’s up-to-date in current usage and proves to be a one-stop resource for terms used in specific trades in our industry. A valuable addition to my library.Glenn Almquist, Structural Engineer

This was a very interesting read, and definitely a page turner for me. This story has many interests for me, the adoption, something that I have always liked reading about and Guatemala, as I grew up there.Kate Malloy goes to Guatemala to study the water quality of Lake Atitlan, In 1990 on an academic grant, while living in Santiago Atitlan, she befriends a woman from a nearby village and is teaching her English in exchange for local tips on how to do things. The woman has two year old twins, Sofia being one of them, Tragedy strikes while she is there and she witnesses a massacre by the Military of a group of indigenous people, one being her friend with the twins, and hearing a baby cry after the group has been gunned down, she rushes in to grab Sofia, the others, as far as she can tell are all dead and takes off with the baby before anyone can stop her. Making her way for days to Antigua, where she meets some interesting people that end up helping her Illegally adopt Sofia so that she can take her back to the USA and out of harms way. One of those people is Will, a linguist and ex peace corp volunteer, who becomes an important part of her life.I will not give away anymore of the story, but a good part of the book takes place in Guatemala both in the 1990's and in 2003.I hope in this case the author will write a follow up book about this story and its characters as it left me wanting more.

I love books about Guatemala. When this one was recommended by a friend, I was excited to read it. While I liked many aspects, The Center of the World had me more annoyed than excited by the end. Why? I found Kate to be whiny--someone I wouldn't want to talk to in real life. However, for me the book's fatal flaw was one of culture. Important parts of the book are set in Santiago Atitlan--a Tz'utujil town. The author, however, has the people speaking Kaqchikel. You don't have to know much about Lake Atitlan to know that the people of Santiago Atitlan do not speak Kaqchikel. Of course, this is a work of fiction and the author can change facts to fiction as she chooses. However, many of the reviewers talk about how much they learned about Guatemalan people and culture. Well, in this case, people are learning something absolutely wrong. This change did nothing for the story and it cause so much cognitive dissonance that it stripped away much of my enjoyment of the book.

I also wrote about the devastating impact of the violence in the 1990s and its root causes of this sad period in Guatemalan history, which this author introduces in beautiful prose. The story explores the mother-daughter bond which crosses cultures against the backdrop of one of the most violent times of Guatemala’s history,Young Guatemalan adoptee Sofia is grieving the loss of her stepfather, Martin, who provides information after his death that turns everything she thought about her adoption upside down. She confronts her mother, Kate, who is forced to tell the truth, which takes her back to the 1990s (the transition is seamless).Kate explains that she was a graduate student in Guatemala when Sofia’s parents were killed and that she had tried to protect her from the violence. But Sofia is determined to discover the truth from the past, which takes her, along with her mother and grandfather, on a journey back to Guatemala. The author’s background as a psychologist is evident in appreciating the family dynamics. Sophia’s confusion and pain are evident just as Kate’s regret and desire to make things right is heartrending. All of this is complicated by Kate’s encounter with her first love in Guatemala, “Will”, who specializes in native languages. Revenge from a fellow American back in the 1990s complicates Kate’s ability to get Sophia safely out of the country. After Kate’s narrow escape from Guatemala, Will pursued his career in Guatemala over the years working with the local Maya communities. When Sophia arrives in Guatemala, she tracks him down during her search for her true identify and looks to him for an explanation of the circumstances that pulled her away from her own Mayan family. While in her former Maya community, Sophia experiences serious culture shock, as everything is so different from her home in the U.S., but her championship level of soccer allows her to connect with all the young people in the community. The story ends with Kate and her true love, Will, leaving a church holding hands after Sophia has popped her head to inquire, “Mom, are you okay?”The author is a Ph.D, a novelist and essayist. She teaches writing in Guatemala. Her new book, “The Tiger in the House” came out in March of this year. In regards to the reviewer who disputed the fact that the community of Santiago Atitlan, where the initial violence took place, spoke Tz’utujil, not Kaqchikel as stated in the book, I missed this fact, although I worked in Guatemala on and off for over eight years and have visited it all my life with my Guatemalan wife. However, Guatemala has 23 native languages and they do speak Tz’utujil in Santiago, but on the other side of the Lake in Panjalachel, they speak Kaqchikel. It’s complicated. So I’ll give the author a pass and, by the way, the book is fiction, and a real page-turner.

I always love books that teach me something new. I knew nothing about Guatemala, but now, after reading this book, almost believe I have been there. The author's descriptions are vivid...both of the beauty of the land and the people, and of the horrors of war there. I may never get to Guatemala, but I thank the author for sharing her sense of that country with me. From my perspective as a mother I felt the anguish of the main character's need to protect her child in the best way she could, even though that way was flawed. Throughout the book the reader is forced to think, "What would I have done? Would I be brave enough to do this?" And, last, who doesn't love a good love story?

What I loved about reading "The Center of the World" is that I learned things. Jacqueline Sheehan has such a strong voice in this beautiful novel that I found myself in that rare zone when I read. With the revolution in Guatemala as the story's background, I was introduced to the Mayan culture through a gracefully webbed storyline full of surprises. This is only one thing I learned. Another? Love lingers. When Kate disappears from Will's life, I secretly hoped that she would not forget the depth of her feelings for him. Sheehan did not disappoint me. Characters run away, explode, and do the unpredictable. This new novel reads fast but not so fast that we feel faint from exhaustion. It is nice to stay awhile with the characters as they think through their next moves. You'll love this book!

The authors present the approach and adeptly explain that chronic pain, even that with a physical basis, is based in known or unconscious trauma, bodily energy that is unreleased. This book is just full of techniques to help reduce that pain. There are so many, it is difficult to know where to even start, although the authors do present them in a sequence. All the techniques are based on some kind of energy movement and/or somatic methods and/or imagery and/or breathing techniques. I have done several of them and have not only learned more about my own body, but have gained some pain relief. Most must be done over time and regularly to get benefits, so selecting the ones to incorporate into your life can be a challenge. It is not that any are difficult to do or incorporate into your life, but as I have said, there are so many to select from. The authors do encourage you to journal about your pain, something I have always resisted doing. However, I did decide to do so as I read this book and was actually surprised at what I learned. Certainly, their perspective that those of us in pain have avoidance based attitudes (based on avoiding the pain) and don't know our own bodies well is true. This book encourages one to see their body as their friend and helper, even if your body is presenting you with a lot of pain. This book is a keeper.

I purchased the Kindle version. I have not yet read much of the book, but I am disappointed to find that the Kindle version does not seem to include the CD content. If you want access to those resources, do not buy the Kindle version.After I have read the book, I will come back and update this entry with a real review of the book content. If the authors or their representatives contact me with a way to get access to those materials for those who purchased the Kindle version, I will add that update to this review as well.

Peter Levine was the first author who made me feel I wasn't crazy. He KNOWS PTSD both from research and his own personal experience which makes him the foremost expert about it.Freedom from Pain comes with a CD with various breathing and vocal exercises. I began the CD a couple of weeks ago and have been listening to parts of it every single day. There are also simple exercises I can do throughout the day. I am slowly reading the book as well. Both have created improvements in me I never thought I would see.I have had severe, prolonged, chronic PTSD since 2000. I have also become mostly agoraphobic. I have a long road ahead in my life and I know it. However, I have been surprised by changes in my brain as I continue to listen and do the exercises on the CD that comes with this book. I find myself making more hopeful statements to myself and others. Others have also noticed the changes.I highly recommend trying this book and doing the exercises if you are suffering from trauma and pain. Try it for a couple of months every day and see if you experience any changes.

I am a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner and bodyworker. I bought a copy of this at Whole Foods thinking that it would be nice to have it in the future for my clients who deal with pain. Within one day, I gave it to a friend who has been dealing with long time pain in her back from arthritis. She called me that night and was amazed at the difference just one exercise had made for her. I bought two more copies just to have them on hand and they are both already gone! I highly recommend this resource for anyone who is dealing with pain issues. The authors are top of the line experts. This is something that is really needed by the world. Thank you Peter Levine and Maggie Phillips for this great resource. I am looking forward to receiving the paperback coming out in May.PS: I got my copies of the new paperback book early. It is great! Especially good for people who prefer reading to listening to CDs. It is a wonderful compilation of both authors experience and knowledge. My recommendation for the book is just as high as for the CD set. They have non-judgemental and gentle ways of dealing with different types of pain. I am not dealing with a lot of pain myself, but I did one of the exercises when I was dealing with a very stressful situation and it grounded and calmed me right down. I'm giving one of the books to my sister who has diabetic neuropathy in her feet and hands. They have specific ideas for specific types of pain. If you are in pain and haven't been able to find anything to help, this may just be what you are looking for. There are so many ideas, that you are likely to find something that will work for you.

Btw, don't by Kindle version of this book because it doesn't contain audio, as others have noted.With that said, the book is thoughtful, insightful and obviously written by a practitioner who has experienced the trials and tribulations and yes triumphs of the pain recovery process.

This book was a waste of time and money for me. I did the exercises and did not get any results. I still have the same exact amount of pain.The book even indicates that you will need to see a professional of some sort. Then why do I need this book?I don’t think this book can cure anyone of anything.

This book is not simply theoretical, filled with the reasons you experience pain. It beautifully and systematically offers an insightful step by step process of how to release trauma held in the body that shows up as pain. After reading book after book on the somatic pain experience, this is the first book that actually gave me useful practices that midway through had an actual impact on my pain. I shall be reading this over and over until all of my trauma based pain is released.

I am a serious US birder who studied for a 4-week, self-guided birding trip to Australia. For the US, I am a fan of “The Sibley Guide to Birds.” In the field, I typically use the Sibley app.For me, the strength of this book was the 30 pages in the beginning on habitat (including photos!). Australia is so different from the US, so this part filled a gap in my education.The birds in Australia were overwhelmingly different from those in the US. This book was not a good one for me to start learning about the different families and field marks of the birds I was studying. I found Pizzey and Knight helpful there, but I later found “The Australian Bird Guide” to be my favorite.My biggest complaint about this book: The photos do not have the species name on them, but instead are coded by a number. I had to look at the number on the photo and then find the corresponding number on the left-hand page to determine the species. On some photo pages, there are 3 species, each with photos on a separate row, with 2 photos for each species. On others, there are 5 species, so the first row might have 2 photos, each of a different species, the next row might have 2 photos of a single species, and the 3rd row might also have 2 photos of 2 different species. I found this cumbersome. Learning Australian birds was hard enough! I also preferred Pizzey and Knight because it was more like Sibley, giving multiple plumages for each species, and I didn’t have to work so hard to figure out what was what: the illustrations had the name written in English rather than coded by number. On the other hand, the photos are lovely (“eye candy” as one reviewer wrote), and the coding more easily allows them to be used as a quiz if you want to test your ability to ID the birds. I do like looking at photos of birds that I’m studying. They’re in more natural positions, and it’s a different way of looking at the birds.Range maps are small (postage stamp sized), but it is a smaller book so that is not unreasonable. For species that are highly localized, it can be difficult to see the locations where it occurs.The font is a bit small for me, not readable without my reading glasses. (“The Sibley Guide to Birds” is just barely readable without my reading glasses.)One strength for US birders not so comfortable with the metric system is that the size of birds is given in both inches and centimeters.I think it could be a good book for beginning birders or for those who prefer photographic guides. When I was starting out, that was my preference. For birders who like Sibley and want to study Australian birds, I would recommend “The Australian Bird Guide,” which I think sets a new standard for excellence. It a large book, not a guide to be carried into the field.

I'll start by saying that I really like this book. My husband and I ordered it when we thought that we might be taking our first trip to Australia next June. The first thing that I noticed is that it is visually exciting and is filled with eye candy. Second is the very informative habitat descriptions in the front of the text. In hind sight I really wish that I would have had a clear introduction to habitats when I first started birding in the U.S. Third is the succinct glossary that is sure to have a few new terms for visiting birders but also and perhaps more importantly for Australians that like nature and want to learn more about their natural environment. This very directly relates to my second comment about habitat descriptions. Fourth is the layout. Species descriptions are on the left page and their images are directly across on the right page and in the same order visually. In my opinion this is the only way to make a field guide truly functional. Fifth is the size. The size is actually something that you can take into the field and for the size the book has an impressive amount of information. Sixth is the font. The selected typeface is clear and easy to read. For me this is crucial for a field guide that I am trying to reference quickly. This is a well thought out guide that is actually fun to spend time with.

This is a definite boon to birdwatchers as most other bird books have line drawings which I think you'll agree are nowhere near as accurate as photographs! My one niggle at the digital version I have is that the photos are bunched together in groups of 5 or 6 rather than directly associated with their description, but this may not be an issue with the print version!Having this and the Moorcraft book available while twitching is just fabulous - recommended!

The ONLY Australian bird guide that is decent on Amazon. Good photographs, detailed description, organized like traditional field guides. I used it a great deal while in Australia.

This is a pretty good book and I used it recently to find a 100 new species of birds in Australia. The only problem I have with it is its size....it is too big to stick in a back pocket, alas.

On shelves full of field guides this one stands out as one of my favorites. The photos are excellent and show a variety of possible ID challenges. The descriptions are thorough and very understandable. I feel ready to identify birds in Australia.

A good bird guide to Australian birds, but it could use more visual detail.

I purchased this book for my hiusband who had searched for a book like this book which can be helpful to a low-average player like himself and he gave a five star score to it after reading and testing his own skill. He is now more confident of winning by craft than by luck.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is serious about learning basic strategy. I thought I knew all the rules very well, but I found out right away that I was weak on soft cards and when to double down. The drills are challenging and they force you to learn the right play in every possible scenario. Practice makes perfect, that's why I love this book. I also like how the solutions are on the very next page as opposed to at the end of the book.

I really liked this book. It's unique because all of the blackjack problems are graphical; mostly every page in the book has visual images of the table and cards, and you really feel like you are at the table playing blackjack (this is much better approach than some books that just say learn the strategy card, or make your own flashcards). This book has a lot blackjack hands and questions to answer (too much to work at one sitting). After working about 20 or so problems I would put the book down to take a break because mentally I was exhausted. it's a really good book and I highly recommend it for learning basic strategy. The website also comes with a PC game but I haven't tried it yet.
