John D. Kraus was my mentor in grad school. His ability to communicate as seen in the first edition of the book (1950 - Antennas) is still the standard and is directly what led me to OSU grad school. Advanced students should not only have this third edition, but should work to find a copy of the first edition too. As indicated, the third edition is strong on applications - something not available in many other antenna related books.

A classic. Pick one up before they all disappear. This book is a bible of antenna theory and will be appreciated by all who have had college-level math. Well written and with very clear diagrams.

I had lost my copy of this book in a fire. It had been my bible for antenna basic reference book for years, especially for helical antennas. It is a most welcome addition to my rebuilding of my reference library. John D. Kraus' book is one of the books I recommend for any engineers or hobbyist antenna reference library.

Everything is derived. My calculus knowledge is a bit rusty after all these years, but I appreciate the high level of the math and writing. I plan to use some of his original work in Helical antennas as described in the book. I can't think of a better vote for it.His Ham call was W8JK, I am W6JWN

I found some aspects of the text, especially chapters 6, 13 and 14, to be problematic. I thought the approach to the exposition of the theory of a given topic to be somewhat choppy. Much text is devoted to finding simplified expressions which can be distracting and impedes understanding. In a few instances, the reader is directed to external sources to get foundational details. And, often, the result presented applies only in special cases, such as, in the far field, or for electrically small antennas, or for antennas an odd integer multiple of a half wavelength. For example, in the section on self-impedance of a thin linear antenna (13-5), the statement is made that it is "common practice to shorten the antenna a few percent to make X11=0." Yet the expression presented for X11 is the sine integral which is non-zero everywhere except at Si(0). So, absent thorough exposition of the theory, this is not helpful to those interested in the general case.I believe this book would be vastly improved if a systematic approach, in the context of electromagnetic theory, is adopted for exposition of the material. Development of new topics should begin with first principles. Sections building on earlier sections should include appropriate back references. References to external papers or earlier editions should not be used as substitute for exposition of details as these sources are generally inaccessible to the reader. Recognizing the accessibility of powerful mathematics software, much of the material dealing with simplifying assumptions could be edited out in favor of more complete exposition of the theory.

If you want to understand RF antennas, get this book. Well-written & easy to understand (as RF goes..) by a well-known and highly respected professor active in the field for decades.

This text assumes the reader understands and can apply mathematics to analysis of antennas. It's an excellent reference for those familiar with the general physics of E&M fields and wave and who wish to examine antennas in more detail.

Great book to apply your EM knowledge. It is really cheap, competitors offers you similar product for more money and similar quality.

There is a difference between "were and where, right and write, there and their." It matters.Constantly having to stop reading for "I man" is not easy. It's easy to relate to dem, des, Ras Tafari, dreadlocks and connections to old Ethiopia. Just can't relate to bad writing, incomplete thoughts and unfinished sentences. The writer needs mystery in the story not backword thoughts or confusing and mixed up characters by using the wrong character name. Disappointed.Good background and history, but that is not enough.

This is a great Sci-fi Afrofuturistic tale set in England. I learned a great deal about Rastafarian culture and history. Prior to reading this story, I never known that much about the Rastafarian religion besides the fact they smoke weed. I also liked the futuristic setting that Mr. Marks creates along with the technology he describes. I can actually envision a future setting just like the one in this book. I also like to see people of African descent as the main characters instead of sidekicks or background characters. I don't want to go into the plotline because I don't want to give away any spoilers. Hopefully Mr. Marks will create a sequel to this story. I would like to see these characters developed in future installments. Bravo Mr. Marks!

My favorite writers use social issues to catch my attention. Anton Marks is now on my list.Dystopian world, current events, people fighting for their rights and freedoms. Add in descriptive phrases to portray all of the above. I'm sold.

Had a lot of culture I was vaguely familiar with. Was hoping for a Beanie Boys or Red Stripe joke and am sad there wasn't one. Will say more on the review show.

A decent read

a very serious story i wasn't prepared for, however, i thoroughly enjoyed it. i'm not knowledgeable about the subject matter so the story line was sometimes hard for me to follow, but i finished it and i really liked it. good strong characters and story.

#241,832 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This is the ninth book I've read on future technology's elimination of all unwanted human labor within 20 years .It is the first one that has seriously addressed the socio-political outfall and the steps necessary for the transition to a workless society in that short period of time. The book spends most of its length dealing with the history underlying our present economic conditions and then supplies the answer to the question of "What next?"It provides a superb analysis of neo-liberalism's rise and why post-WWII and more recent social and political movements have failed except for cosmetic changes .The two are intertwined .Robert Ford's " Rise Of The Robots: Technology and The Threat Of A Jobless Future" is also an excellent book to read before or after reading "Inventing...."

“Inventing the Future” by Nick Srnicek and Alex Williams offers both a practical strategy and hopeful vision of life beyond neoliberalism. The book is a collaboration between Mr. Srnicek, who is a progressive thinker, educator and author with Mr. Williams, who is a brilliant PhD student. The author’s breakthrough analysis suggests that a post-capitalist future is possible.Srnicek and Williams critique the “folk politics” of today’s Left for its failure to offer a systemic challenge to capitalism. The authors believe an equivalent to the Right’s Mont Pelerin Society is needed to articulate an expansive Leftist vision for a better future. An astute analysis supports the author’s contention that a Euro-centric capitalism must necessarily yield to a new, more encompassing concept of humanity whose “synthetic freedom” will know no boundaries.Fortunately, Srnicek and Williams offer a strategy to achieve a “post work consensus”. The key components of the strategy include: full automation (to free labor from routine work); a sharply reduced work week; and a universal basic income (UBI). The authors recognize that consensus-building must focus on persuading the media, academia and business of the necessity for change. On that point, I found Srnicek and Williams’ discussion of the world’s surplus population to be very informative. Capital has no solution to intractable unemployment in the global south that has been caused by a process of proletarianization in an era of post-industrialism. However, the looming prospect of “full unemployment” spreading to the north should be welcomed: humanity has an extraordinary opportunity to break the work ethic and the suffering religiosity of its primitive past. With the benefits of technology freely shared amongst a humanity that has been freed of brutality, greed and competition, one cannot help but be excited about the new horizons that might finally open up for us.I highly recommend this excellent book to everyone.

A hopeful and thorough analysis of how a post capitalist and post work future can arise. We can’t just be opposed to the current, neoliberal hegemony; we must articulate a counter-hegemony that reclaims modernity and the future. What sounds like sci-fi Utopianism at first feels like a rational path out of the current nightmare of late capitalism by the end of the book

The principle flaw in this and many other studies is that they treat work as a means of getting income. They fail to address the issue that a person's sense of who they are is tied to their "work".The book needs a strong editor. The author's ideas are buried in their "hesitancy" and thus the text's redundancy and questions whether this might be best presented in an abridged form. The extensive references and footnotes are an academic approach for validating what has been some careful thought. But amplify the lack of confidence or the paranoia of academic peer review. The pop ups on the kindle version are a nice technical touch but add little clarity to the text.

An incredibly playful, sobering book. The sobering part is the forces that conspire to make work disappear--of course automation affecting manufacturing, transport and now service sector jobs at all levels but also in equal measure a recognition that rates of economic growth are slowing down--there is simply too much capacity. What dies in that slow down is the promise of an integrative globalization, but what have we lost, most of us were not true believers. so far what the end of globalization seems to have produced is wide spread isolationist/right-wing/populism, but there's a chance for that to change. The author's formulate a theoretical and practical response to our present circumstances--laying claim to this abundance in the form of a demadn for a universal basic income. The end of work as we know it is coming (and really has long been here in one way in Detroit and another in the informal-economy cities of the so-called developing world). What we have with the concept of a basic income is to re-create the terms of this ending into a liberation, rather than the conditions of a new servitude.

If humanity is to survive something has to change. Neoliberalism/Capitalism isn't working. Life for the 99% is getting worse. The thinking behind the proposals presented here are radical, intelligent and plausible. It is unlikely that the future proposed can be achieved without a revolution, or a world government. Where is the leadership?

Brilliant critique of the left by figures of the left. I don't agree with the authors' conclusions but that isn't important. This is rigorous, engaging and challenging analysis and for once we are spared academic jargon and theory speak. A necessary book for the activist.

This is a great reading guide that has been updated over the years. You may not read all the books in this plan, but you will have enough reading to keep you busy and educated for the rest of your life. I feel that classical education is important for understanding the human race and how we got to where we are today. This guide gives us a selection of so-called great books which everyone should or know about to be truly educated. this guide has an undated list of contemporary books to read providing us with a balanced reading list from the past and the present. One thing I like about this book are the short summaries of recommended reading, so we can decided what we want to read, without being overwhelmed with trying to read every book on the list. I wish there were an Kindle version of this book, and I wish that this book were available to people in poor countries who have an e-reader or smart phone, so they can enjoy our rich global literary tradition. Richard Shaw is the author of reading as consolation Audible.Com

How could C.S. Lewis be omitted? That aside, this is a helpful tutorial for those of us who will never manage to read all the books described here.

Anyone considering this book is likely to be interested in some guidance in "what to read", or perhaps more specifically "where to start" for the purpose of undertaking an exploration of "classics" and literature beyond today's best-sellers and the like.I grew up reading mostly science fiction and other popular literature, and obtained plenty of formal education, but all of it was focused on the sciences and technology. I did not avail myself of the opportunity to use my university days to broaden my humanities education beyond what minimal requirements there were for graduation. Shame on me, and now I am making the effort to fill in those gaps.So the question for me at least is whether or not this particular book is useful in the above sense, because there are a number of volumes that provide similar advice. I have two of them (the other being Great Books), and I selected these two books after doing a fair amount of research, on Amazon and elsewhere, and concluding that for my purposes they would be the best. (And I don't rule out getting another if I really get into this Classics thing). The New Lifetime Reading Plan is the fourth edition of a book originally published in 1960. The author, Clifton Fadiman, is a member of the Board of Editors of the Encyclopedia Britannica and the editorial board of the Book-of-the-Month Club. I have to admit that my first reaction to reading those qualifications was to be skeptical; after all, isn't BOMC a bit on the other end of the spectrum from Sophocles, Euripides, Aeschylus, and the like? (OK, I'm a snob, but we are talking about reading "the Classics", after all, and isn't that almost by definition "snobbish"?). He is joined in this fourth edition by John Major, PhD from Harvard (now we're talking), and Senior Editor of BOMC (one step forward, one step back). In this book you will find coverage of 133 authors, averaging just over 2 pages for each, providing a nice albeit brief outline of each author's life and works, and giving one or more recommended books for each. The authors are divided into 5 sections, covering broad chronological periods. It also includes an additional 133 authors in a supplement at the end, under "Going Further", all from the 20th century, with much shorter write-ups only covering recommended books for each. It is therefore much more than simply a list of what to read, and that where it has great value. For some authors I feel this book provides insufficient guidance - for example, for Shakespeare the recommendation is to read his entire works (!!), and if you can't find the energy to read all 37 plays, plus the sonnets, then they do deign to provide a list of 12 (only!) as "minimum reading". OK, I am going to accept putting Hamlet,King Lear, and Othello on my "to read" list, but isn't that enough? For Dickens, seven of his works are recommended. (Again, this is why you need more than one list to give you guidance). One thing that this book does not provide is sufficient guidance regarding which translation is best if there is more than one available (for works translated into English). So you will need to do the checking yourself if you want to attempt to get the version considered to be the truest to the author's intent in their own language. (And it is always less clear than I would like. Does it have to be so difficult? I guess it does). With those comments, my opinion of this book, after owning it for enough time to have read a number of the recommendations, is that it is provides very good information on all of the authors and books covered. It includes a very broad range of authors and books (both chronologically, and otherwise). The articles on each author are long enough to give some very good and interesting information on them. It comes very close to providing exactly what I want, in both coverage and content. On balance I recommend it and consider it a good investment to make if you are intending to explore to any great extend the works that are covered (if possible in combination with at least one other similar reference).

This book is readable and pleasantly snooty. I may not agree with every choice they made, but anyone who manages to read every book on this list will have a pretty good grasp on the world's great literature.

Every book owner should have a copy.I treasured my first copy when only thirteen years old, and the book opened a world of wonders for me.

This book is essential. It is opinionated and selective. It promises nothing but the considered opinion of two people that have been significantly involved with reading and thinking about literature throughout much of their lives. Many of the comments made by different reviewers at this site are addressed in the book itself. It explains why the Bible is not included. It explains why significant scientific works are excluded. Even within the strict realm of literature, they also explain that people might argue with their choices. In fact, this is part of the point. This is not the last word on literature. It is a starting place that provides a number of excellent points of departure. It invites you to look at and think about the authors, the books it recommends and ask some basic questions: Is the author described interesting enough to read? If so, which book? Once finished with a book, do I agree with the comments made? Why or why not?The authors provide a good summary - some have honestly brought tears to my eyes I thought they were that good - and some pointers for background information, literary criticism, anthologies, suggested translations and other information. You may find that Thucydides is "charmless" as Clifton claims. I didn't. You may find that Finnegan's Wake is worth your time. Clifton recommends avoiding it - which I find I agree after several attempts to read it.Most importantly to me, it is with the suggestions of this book that I was able to tackle works like Joyce's Ulysess and Mann's Magic Mountain that would have been impossible to do without the very helpful suggestions it contains. This book should be owned by anyone with even a passing interest in literature. It needs to be approached as you would a respected friend with a different outlook on life. Take the suggestions you find useful and explore what you like. It is a guide, and used appropriately, it will help you make good choices in deciding what to read (what, which translation) and help you get the tools you may want to understand it better (historical context, explanations). Buy it, and read it!

Cheap production book, with advice that you could easily find online in a blogpost or two. A lot of rambling for not a lot of content.

There really wasn't enough "meat" in the book for people that are looking to improve how they can learn faster and better.

Nothing special about this book. It was clear that the author was not an expert, but simply one who google searches out to learn. If you've spent at least a day - no, an hour - reading up advice how to learn on the internet, Read a few pages of it, and you can tell. Mediocre even as review. It's not worth more than $2.

Very good self-improvement ebook. Well worth reading.

Great review / summary of which techniques work and don't work for learning.I enjoyed the book and am already putting it to use.One tip that surprised me was that highlight is not a good way to learn. That will be hard for me to give up!

Skilled Hands, Strong Spirits: A Century of Building Trades History, by Grace Palladino

Review

"Skilled Hands, Strong Spirits gives us a valuable institutional look at the strengths and limitations of craft union autonomy. From a contemporary perspective it is a look at the real problems inherent in 'changing to organize,' a slogan clearly identified with the current debate over labor's future. For this reason it is an important book." (Labor Studies Journal)"Throughout its history, various unions have left the BCTD [Building & Construction Trades Department] over jurisdictional and other disputes.... Institutional histories are difficult to write; it's easy to get caught up in personalities or the spider web of intrigue and behind the scenes details. Pallidino, however, handles this with grace and an over-arching view of the story. Anyone who has spent time on a construction site or a newly elected local trades officer would learn much from this very readable volume." (Grand Prairie Union News)"Grace Palladino's Skilled Hands, Strong Spirits is a comprehensive institutional history of the national building trades unions. She describes the unchanging conflicts―the debates over centralized authority vs. local autonomy, inter-union rivalries, and jurisdictional disputes―that have served to divide more often than unite this wing of the labor movement. In today's challenging environment, new strategies and approaches are more important than ever if construction workers are to be justly rewarded for their difficult and dangerous labor." (Mark Erlich, New England Regional Council of Carpenters, author of With Our Hands and Labor at the Ballot Box)"Grace Palladino's sweeping narrative is the best history ever written about the venerable cornerstone of American unionism. It is deeply informative, wisely balancing criticism and praise for the building trades while pointing the way to a better future. This is a landmark book in labor studies." (Michael Kazin, Georgetown University, author of Barons of Labor: The San Francisco Building Trades and Union Power in the Progressive Era and The Populist Persuasion: An American History)"There have been few serious studies of national construction unions since the era when labor history was a branch of labor economics. Moreover, there has been virtually no good history of construction unionism at the national level since then. Skilled Hands, Strong Spirits fills that gap admirably." (Richard Schneirov, Indiana State University)

This book is a terrific history of the Building and Construction Trades Department (BCTD), an autonomous "department" of the AFL-CIO. It is the oldest of the labor federation's so-called "departments" (which are really just federations of unions in a specific industry, affiliated with the AFL-CIO). Author Grace Palladino is an editor of the Samuel Gompers Papers. As such, she has knowledge of, and access to, the critical documents in the founding of the BCTD.Roughly two-thirds of the book covers the BCTD's first 50 years, giving slightly short-shrift to the department's second half-century. In part, this may be forgiven because those were the BCTD's most interesting decades. But it also reflects Palladino's background, the materials she has access to, and the political nature of the American labor movement (which treats its recent history as if it were a state secret, and if it got into the hands of the Russians we ALL BE DEAD...).The book goes to great lengths to situate the reader within the hothouse environment of the construction trades, which is a major help to the reader not familiar with how construction and construction trade unions function. It does a very good job, too, at outlining the changes in construction technology, and how this drove the jurisdictional battles among and growth of the construction trade unions. To her credit, Palladino also manages to include brief biographies of many of the people critical to the history of the BCTD. This is not an easy task, yet these are integreated nearly seemlessly into the text. Many of these individuals are nearly forgotten, and most left behind no memoirs, recollections or even biographical sketches. The reader practically needs a scorecard, because there are so many names and the individuals are so unfamiliar. But Palladino makes this work. It's a bit worrisome to see Palladino rely on just a few sources for the early history of the BCTD and construction unions. Notably, she leans very heavily on William Haber's "Industrial Relations in the Building Industry," Richard Schneirov and Thomas Suhrbur's "Union Brotherhood, Union Town" (a history of the Carpenter's union), and some mainstream labor and newspaper articles by notoriously self-serving authors such as William English Walling. The record gets even thinner as history marches on. Little scholarly attention has been paid to construction unions in the post-war period, and a great deal of the reference materials relies on first-person interviews with key leaders of the BCTD and construction unions. While such interviews are critical and extremely valuable, the interviewees are also notoriously political and worried about their legacies. I wish more supporting material had been included.Too, the book contains digressions on the thoughts and policies of Gompers, some of which don't seem terribly relevant. But such shortcomings can be forgiven. The historical and scholarly literature regarding the BCTD and building unions is extremely thin, and Palladino has done yeoman's work in digging out what few primary-source documents and publications remain available. The book is eminently readable, contains superb endnotes (listed by the page the note appeared on, which is a major help to the reader), and manages to evoke a strong sense of the times and people which concern the rise, growth and retrenchment of the construction and building trades. This is a major historical step forward for labor history and our understanding of the construction and building industry in the United States.

well written, good history...
