Ministering in Honor-Shame Cultures: Biblical Foundations and Practical Essentials, by Jayson Georges

Review

"We can learn so much from failure if we want to, and the authors share here their failures and successes in working among societies where honor-shame values operate rather than those of guilt-innocence. Their plea is that we read the Bible with fresh eyes, seeing how the gospel was communicated in the honor-shame cultures in which it was written, rather than using the contextualized guilt-innocence paradigm we have accepted as the only way to minister. The text is full of examples that help the reader understand how differently honor-shame codes play out in the understanding of salvation and discipleship. It is a healthy shift for Western missionaries to rethink their evangelism strategies, especially in the collectivist societies in which many of them work. Sherwood and I strongly recommend this book to people trying to understand a way of structuring the world that is very different from the one in which they grew up."--Judith Lingenfelter, professor emerita, School of Intercultural Studies, Biola University"Building responsibly on biblical and anthropological foundations for understanding honor and shame cultures, the authors offer practical reflections on how to engage honor-shame societies in the work of intercultural mission. This book will especially be of help to Christian workers from the West serving among Majority World peoples."--Edward L. Smither, dean, associate professor of intercultural studies, director, Zwemer Center, College of Intercultural Studies, Columbia International University"Although Jayson Georges has written on the important topic of honor-shame in the past, this book, coauthored with Mark Baker, takes an understanding of honor-shame dynamics to another level. Every message bearer working in non-Western cultures needs to read and apply the insights and principles of this book if they are to avoid the typical cultural blunders too often committed by too many. Within are crucial insights for effective crosscultural ministry."--Marvin J. Newell, senior VP, Missio Nexus, author of Crossing Cultures in Scripture"I was so glad for this book to stretch my heart and mind. Baker and Georges gave me new tools and hope for ministry, not just in a Majority World context, but in Western contexts that are increasingly both secular and globalized. Their experiences and thoughtfulness as missionaries give particular power to their call for us to love and care for people in 'old' ways."--Mako Nagasawa, director, New Humanity Institute"An exceptional book on this timeless worldview and timely topic. The authors interweave real life stories to help us rediscover a biblical worldview and see how to apply the living Word of God today."--Samuel E. Chiang, president and CEO, Seed Company"What Georges and Baker have done in this wonderfully helpful volume is unprecedented. They have plumbed the depths of current scholarly discussions on honor and shame from multiple sources (biblical studies, theology, anthropology, and intercultural studies) and have made such information wonderfully accessible for the practitioner. Intelligent, informed, and culturally perceptive, this resource will impact the theory and practice of missionaries and local leaders in unprecedented ways. Throughout, the writing is critical yet engaging. The appendixes ("Key Scriptures on Honor-Shame" and "Biblical Stories Addressing Honor-Shame") will prove to be exceptionally helpful resources. Those working in the global world of today must read this book. To not do so would be a true shame!"--Christopher Flanders, Abilene Christian University"Georges and Baker have taken the seeds of previous work on honor and shame in the environment of the biblical world and in modern cultures and cultivated them into fruitful insights and guidance in the areas of theology, crosscultural engagement and, especially, missions. They provide a culturally sensitive reading of Scripture and of modern non-Western situations, significantly advancing the question of how awareness of this dimension of the texts and our global community can improve our interactions with people living from a decidedly different axis of values and in our thinking about the contextualization of the gospel."--David A. deSilva, Ashland Theological Seminary, Trustees' Distinguished Professor of New Testament and Greek

A year ago, I moved to an honor/shame culture to serve Jesus and it didn't take me long to realize that it was VERY different from my own American culture. I asked family and friends to pray for my understanding of cultural issues and how to handle problems in a culturally AND biblically appropriate way. I got an answer to this prayer in the form of this book!Oh, my! I wish I had read this before I came to this country! I read another book, which was similar, in my training called the 3-D Gospel which talked about three different culture types: guilt/innocence, which is typically America and Europe, fear/power, which is mostly cultures that have animistic beliefs (Africa), and shame/honor which is the Middle-east, South Asia, and South East Asia. (Although every culture sees aspects of each of these types, each culture has a predominate one.) "3D" is a great introductory book, but it mainly contrasts and compares the three cultures and shares why it is important to understand the type of culture in which you serve. This 'Ministering' books goes into much greater detail on how to communicate honor to those individuals within a shame/honor culture. This book first takes a reader through the cultural anthropology of a shame/honor culture and how it appears in real life and differs from the guilt/innocence culture. Then there is a section showing examples of shame/honor in the Bible, both the Old and New Testaments. Lastly, there is a section on using this knowledge in practical ministry using real life stories from the authors. It addresses the question of how do you bestow honor on people in a culturally appropriate way while rejecting their practices that are not God honoring without dishonoring them. This book covers an amazingly important topic: The ability to evangelize the remaining 6992 unreached people groups in the world! This is because most of those people groups are in shame/honor cultures.I would highly recommend this book to anyone serving among people from shame/honor cultures, especially to those who are new to ministry (like me) or are preparing to go. But I would also recommend this book to individuals working with internationals in the US and Europe because, of course, they bring their cultural beliefs to their new country just like I brought mine to this one. I truly believe that God brought this book to my attention and it has already been a tremendous help!

This book is an essential read for anyone seeking to share the Gospel in a relevant manner among honor-shame societies. It articulated what I have long experienced but did not have words for. I have lived in honor-shame cultures for nearly two decades and could therefore easily understand the themes expressed by the authors. Over the years, I have had conversations about honor-shame cultures with certain friends and family members, and I wondered whether or not they might begin to comprehend through this book the cultural differences that they have never personally experienced. “Just as Westerners fail to adequately observe cultural underpinnings of honor and shame in today’s world, Western Christians also often overlook the prominent role of honor and shame in the Bible, though it comes from an honor-shame context.” The authors did an incredible job of clearly explaining honor-shame biblical contexts. I am confident to share this book with those whom I have discussed honor-shame themes with, knowing that the thorough explanations in this book will communicate with clarity a fuller depiction of the Gospel.

This book helps you step back from your culture and survey the different approaches and personalities of other cultures. It's a breath of refreshment as one learns to navigate the different cultural aspects to become for God-centered, that is to transform ones living into having the honor code of God. It's a delightful book full of stories!

Learning about others begins with language, but is enriched through understanding the cultural milieu from which the language emanates. Jayson Georges enriches his brothers and sisters in Christ through this book as he highlights how the Gospel is supra-cultural - it speaks grace, truth and love to the nations. In my opinion, this is not only a must-read for Christian leaders, but also a must-teach so as to help the Body of Christ to overcome its fear of that which is different and to embrace the LORD who, undoubtedly, enjoys and deserves the varied praise from so many cultures.

Everyone is a cross-cultural worker today, even if you never leave your hometown. Filled with real life stories that demonstrate applications of the principles taught, this is a must-read. It will open your eyes to biases in your own thinking about God and Scripture. Our native view of the Gospel is true, but not complete when viewed only through our own cultural lens.

Excellent discussion on the honor-shame dynamic that characterizes most Majority World cultures.

Excellent intro to the subject. It's dawned on me increasingly that Millennial culture is much more honor-shame based than has really been recognised. So this isn't just for those with an interest in working with overseas cultures.

The authors write from personal experience, theological depth and cultural sensitivity. A great window into the hearts and needs of people who need to be restored to dignity in the image of God.
