A year ago, I moved to an honor/shame culture to serve Jesus and it didn't take me long to realize that it was VERY different from my own American culture. I asked family and friends to pray for my understanding of cultural issues and how to handle problems in a culturally AND biblically appropriate way. I got an answer to this prayer in the form of this book!Oh, my! I wish I had read this before I came to this country! I read another book, which was similar, in my training called the 3-D Gospel which talked about three different culture types: guilt/innocence, which is typically America and Europe, fear/power, which is mostly cultures that have animistic beliefs (Africa), and shame/honor which is the Middle-east, South Asia, and South East Asia. (Although every culture sees aspects of each of these types, each culture has a predominate one.) "3D" is a great introductory book, but it mainly contrasts and compares the three cultures and shares why it is important to understand the type of culture in which you serve. This 'Ministering' books goes into much greater detail on how to communicate honor to those individuals within a shame/honor culture.This book first takes a reader through the cultural anthropology of a shame/honor culture and how it appears in real life and differs from the guilt/innocence culture. Then there is a section showing examples of shame/honor in the Bible, both the Old and New Testaments. Lastly, there is a section on using this knowledge in practical ministry using real life stories from the authors. It addresses the question of how do you bestow honor on people in a culturally appropriate way while rejecting their practices that are not God honoring without dishonoring them.This book covers an amazingly important topic: The ability to evangelize the remaining 6992 unreached people groups in the world! This is because most of those people groups are in shame/honor cultures.I would highly recommend this book to anyone serving among people from shame/honor cultures, especially to those who are new to ministry (like me) or are preparing to go. But I would also recommend this book to individuals working with internationals in the US and Europe because, of course, they bring their cultural beliefs to their new country just like I brought mine to this one. I truly believe that God brought this book to my attention and it has already been a tremendous help!

This book is an essential read for anyone seeking to share the Gospel in a relevant manner among honor-shame societies. It articulated what I have long experienced but did not have words for. I have lived in honor-shame cultures for nearly two decades and could therefore easily understand the themes expressed by the authors. Over the years, I have had conversations about honor-shame cultures with certain friends and family members, and I wondered whether or not they might begin to comprehend through this book the cultural differences that they have never personally experienced. “Just as Westerners fail to adequately observe cultural underpinnings of honor and shame in today’s world, Western Christians also often overlook the prominent role of honor and shame in the Bible, though it comes from an honor-shame context.” The authors did an incredible job of clearly explaining honor-shame biblical contexts. It's a breath of refreshment as one learns to navigate the different cultural aspects to become for God-centered, that is to transform ones living into having the honor code of God. I went on a hunt and found the author on YouTube giving a TED Talk called Steal Like an Artist. There it was, the entire book in an eleven minute speech. Save your money and just listen to the speech.

Austin Kleon writes, “All advice in autobiographical… This book is me talking to a previous version of myself… These ideas apply to anyone who’s trying to inject some creativity into their life and their work. (That should describe all of us.)” The book is thoughtfully written and designed in a creative six-inch by six-inch format.The idea behind stealing like an artist is that “nothing is completely original… All creative work builds on what came before... If we’re free from the burden of trying to be completely original, we can stop trying to make something out of nothing, and we can embrace influence instead of running away from it.”“We learn by copying. We’re talking about practice here, not plagiarism—plagiarism is trying to pass someone else’s work off as your own. Copying is about reverse engineering… Remember: Even The Beatles started as a cover band.”“You are the sum of your influences… Your job is to collect good ideas. The more good ideas you collect, the more you can choose from to be influenced by… Seeing yourself as part of a creative lineage will help you feel less alone as you start making your own stuff… You don’t want to look like your heroes, you want to see like your heroes… That’s what you really want—to internalize their way of looking at the world… It is the act of making things and doing our work that we figure out who we are.”“You have to be curious about the world in which you live… Always be reading…. Don’t worry about doing research. Just search.”“You’re only going to be as good as the people you surround yourself with… If you ever find that you’re the most talented person in the room, you need to find another room.”“The manifesto is this: Draw the art you want to see, start the business you want to run, play the music you want to hear, write the books you want to read, build the products you want to use—do the work you want to see done.”The author urges readers to “step away from the screen… You need to find a way to bring your body into your work… If we strum a guitar, or shuffle sticky notes around a conference table, or start kneading clay, the motion kickstarts our brain into thinking… The computer is really good for editing your ideas… but it’s not really good for generating ideas. There are too many opportunities to hit the delete key.”Kleon points out the value of side projects and hobbies in sparking creativity. “By side projects I mean the stuff that you thought was just messing around. Stuff that’s just play. That’s actually the good stuff. That’s when the magic happens… I think it’s good to have a lot of projects going on at once so you can bounce between them. When you get sick of one project, move over to another… Practice productive procrastination.” The author quotes playwright Steven Tomlinson about having diverse interests: “Let them talk to each other. Something will begin to happen.”“Creativity is subtraction.” The answer to information overload is to “figure out what to leave out” so you can focus on what’s most important to you. “It seems contradictory, but when it comes to creative work, limitations mean freedom… Establishing and keeping a routine can be even more important than having a lot of time.”Kleon touches on the theme of his second book, Show Your Work. “If there was a secret formula for becoming known, I would give it to you. But there’s only one not-so-secret formula that I know: Do good work and share it with people. It’s a two-step process… Not everyone will get it… So get comfortable with being misunderstood, disparaged, or ignored—the trick is to be too busy doing your work to care.” That said, the author says to, “enjoy your obscurity while it lasts… There’s no pressure when you’re unknown. You can do what you want. Experiment. Do things just for the fun of it. When you’re unknown, there’s nothing to distract your form getting better.”On a final note, Kleon writes, “Your mileage may vary… Feel free to take what you can use and leave the rest.”

Steal Like an Artist gave me the push I needed to get into a more creative mindset. Although the book, and its message, may seem simple, it is clear that Austin Kleon has dedicated his life to creativity and using that to produce creative work (poetry, writing, drawing). If you feel stuck in a rut (as I did), this book is for you. The main quote that spoke to me was: "If we're free from the burden of trying to be completely original, we can stop trying to make something out of nothing, and we can embrace influence instead of running away from it. (Kleon, 2015). That burden has been with me for a long time, and now Austin Kleon has given me permission to be inspired and taking from others in order to create something unique. "Imitation is about copying. Emulation is when imitation goes one step further, break through into your own thinking" (Kleon, 2015). This is the perfect book for breaking into your own thinking.

This is a pretty tiny book (the cup of coffee I poured when I started reading was still warm when I finished), but may end up being my favorite of everything I read this year. It's difficult to give a fair rating on this series. On the one hand, I love the concept and the whole series while on the other hand - as one other commentator notes here - the author's writing style drives me nuts at times. I am not American and there are numerous occasions when the street-speak or very American terminology throws me altogether. (For instance: "bangs" - I had to look that one up!) This leads me to comment that all the Garde speak in this style - even Marina and Ella who did not grow up in the USA. Teenagers don't lose their style of talking overnight when moving country - I know, I did this myself. In fact, they may never stop being more Spanish then American (as in the case of Marina and Ella.)Having said all this, the series is enjoyable but again, there needs to be a clearly defined pathway through the five novels and nine novellas. Knowing the correct reading order is essential to understanding the back stories of characters and how they fit with the main novels - particularly when it comes to Adam and Five. Trying to read "The Revenge of Seven" without having first read "The Lost Files: Hidden Enemy" will lead to confusion for the reader. Reading the five main novels alone, is certainly not the path to take. In fact, Adam's appearance in the previous book "The Fall of Five" will seem mysterious without having read the first Lost Files novellas which tell of his relationship with Number One. It would be most helpful if Amazon or the publisher of the series could print the suggested reading order online so as to help newcomers to the series.

Ever since the first book, I've been hooked on the "I Am Number Four" series. As a lover of sci-fi, I've constantly enjoyed the complex characters, the intricate plot, and the many twists, turns, and surprises along the course of the adventures. With each book, I wonder how the new twists can possibly top the previous book, and this time around, everything the characters have worked for finally hits the fan (but in an exciting way).Picking up directly from the previous book, Four/John makes an unlikely ally in Adam, a Mogadorian who gained the Legacy of One and turned traitor to his people (you can read more about this in the mini novels). He quickly joins the team and uses his inside information to help the Garde make a full throttle assault on the Mogadorian command base near Washington, DC. Little do they know they're plans might be too little too late...Meanwhile, Ella has been kidnapped by the Mogadorian leader, and while he tries to turn her to his side, she discovers a shocking truth about her true origins. Finally, Six, Nine, and Marina make their way through the Everglades, trying to track down Five, who turned traitorous. Eventually, all our parties will come together, and end the book on the most shocking, nail-biting cliffhanger of all.At this point, the characters are pretty much fully developed, so there's not much to say about them. From this time onward, it's really the plot that's constantly throwing new info and surprises at us; making the threat of invasion bigger and more wide spread. And just when you think the situation can't get any worse, it does. One thing I would highly recommend is to also read the mini novels that've been released alongside the main novels. More and more, the main story is starting to reference events that happened in the side stories, and this book especially is full of them. So if you find yourself confused at times while reading this, or wonder "well this kind of came out of nowhere", now would probably be a good time to speed read through the mini books. They're not very long and can clear up a lot of confusion and/or unanswered questions.Bottom line, I can't wait for the final book to see how this exciting storyline will all come to an end.

I have enjoyed the other books in the series, so I was really waiting for this amazing addition to this amazing series . This is probably the best one yet because you discover more about characters that really had no introduction in the first place. There is also a substantial amount of action than normal which for a series that has not had much action, is good for the fans. You see a side of Ella that was not shown in the previous books. After, Five betrayed the others in in Fall of Five, the group searches for the aircraft that he left on. What they later find changes what they think and surprises them. Four, John , and NIne team up with the government to kill a politician helping Setrakus Ra by giving him place to be greeted. Six, Marina, and Adam, the Mogadorian who is helping them fight their enemy, go to a Mayan temple to find a secret that they think can help them.Nine and John gets to him and chases him back into his ship. While there they find out that Setrakus has captured Ella.While they think they have lost something occurs that can just save them. Written by Victor, 7th grade

And while the previous book’s title was a huge spoiler, the title of this is fairly misleading, as there is no spirit of revenge by Seven or any other character. At least not after they see how Five has been affected by the death at his hands.Since readers have to wait a year in between each installment and several characters only go by numbers instead of names (making it confusing to keep track of to begin with), I always have to read a recap of what happened before. Thankfully, as I begin reading, most of what happened in the previous novels comes back to me. And these last two installments are easily the best so far.The Revenge of Seven is the fifth book in the Lorien Legacies. The sixth is rumored to be the last, but there could still be more story left to tell. Each installment uncovers more of the intriguing backstory of the Loriens and the characters become more fleshed out as well. I had heard of Louis Zamperini from his affiliation with the Billy Graham organization because my Mother admired Reverend Graham. But I did not dig into his life story. Of course the biography and movie “Unbroken” put this fine man in the public eye in a very prominent way. I wanted to read HIS words, so I got this book. While I admired the movie, I was disappointed that it focused only on his story as a prisoner of war after being lost at sea. I think the really important part of his life was his struggles after he came home and then his conversion to Christ. Of course, that makes our age most uncomfortable. But without that, he would have been just a brave POW who came home and fell apart with drink (as my grandfather did after WWI) and was destroyed by PTSD (which they called battle fatigue or some such). All the Olympics and his war experiences became significant because of his conversion and the way he used his life and experiences to bless, motivate, teach, and lead others – especially troubled youth. He understood troubled youth because he was one himself.This book tells the various stories from his life, but with the purpose of illustrating points he wants to make to help people live better, happier, more positive lives. He never holds himself up as a paragon to emulate, but uses his stories to illustrate what he did wrong, what is possible, and how he found the right way and used that path to help others with the message that you can, too!He talks about the focus, strength, and lessons that running gave his life and what appearing in the Olympics meant for him. He talks about the importance of being prepared for what life throws at you, because you won’t be able to anticipate it all. And you need a sense of humor, as well. A positive attitude each day will provide the power to get through dark times.The lessons of his horrible war experiences are critical. He teaches about the power of not giving in, but also in learning to not hate. That hating is self-punishment and forgiveness is freeing and healing. The secret to life, he teaches us, isn’t the events or circumstances you have but your attitude towards them. After the war, he was still lost. But there is a way and an answer for everything. Of course, many times people will not accept the answer or follow the way. Great follow up to his previous work via Devils on my Heel or Unbroken. Easy read. Book size (physically) is about 2/3 the size of a regular book, so even though it has 230 pages it's more like 125 pages if it were a regular size book. [It's the shape of square versus a rectangular book] Still, it's great to hear the last words and testimony of Louis before his passing. Great life lessons because he takes the reader into the internal thought process as he is going through the adverse moments. I would compare this to Viktor Frankl's: Man's Search for Meaning.

Read this after Devil at My Heels."This second memoir, dictated to co-writer Rensin during the last year of the author’s life, brims with sage wisdom, learned advice and fond observations from his adventurous 97 years. Zamperini answers the most recurring questions asked of him during book signings and lectures, mostly pertaining to his adventures after his service in World War II, his secret to living honorably and what role his faith in God played. The author weaves practical advice into anecdotes on his parents, his troubled adolescence, his post-military spiritual connection with Billy Graham, and how his affinity for distance running on an Olympic level honed enough mental discipline to endure and survive the sadistic torture of a Japanese POW camp and the PTSD that followed. The author also provides robust wilderness survival tips, which saved his life while adrift on a life raft in the Pacific Ocean and during his service as a U.S. Army Air Force bombardier. Certainly, his counsel is often platitudinous (exercise forgiveness, challenge yourself, be positive, and give back), but it’s also inspirational, and his words will offer a reflective refresher course for those receptive to it. Louis was a true example of courage. I can't imagine how a person that goes through what he experienced has so much positivity to spread.The book is about how the experience he lived as POW impacts his choices and how he channels the negative energy into positive acts after he is released. If you are looking for a book about his journey during war, this is not the book you want to read. This book is only about some of his experiences after the war is finished.

Great book. Louie faced many obstacles in his long life and this book reminds the reader that it's how we face these challenges that make us who we are. This book is both inspiring and reassuring that "if you can take it, you can make it." "Without dark clouds, there could be no silver linings." Louie embraced life . . . all of it. And what a life he had because he accepted his circumstances, good and bad, and grew from them throughout his 97 years--always learning, always experiencing and never holding back. Perhaps the best part of the book is about the importance of forgiveness; how forgiveness liberates the person harmed. I highly recommend this book, especially on the eve of a new year; the chance for new beginnings.

The self-serving tone ruined (for me) an otherwise decent book.To be fair, the book offers good illustrations which is why I bought it instead of Clair Davies book - which is the original and still the best IMO. But I'm a visual learner and Davies' illustrations weren't doing it for me ... so I decided to try The Concise Book of Trigger Points. I would probably have given Niel-Asher's book 3-4 stars for professional presentation and good illustrations ... but the manipulative sales pitch offends me.Not that I mind a little soft sell ... everyone needs to make a living, right? But I suffer from Frozen Shoulder - main reason I study Trigger Point books. Niel-Asher brags about the greatness of his technique for treating Frozen Shoulder ... then tells you to go to his web page to learn more. Meanwhile the book I just paid $20 for?Meh.The shoulder section is mediocre if not downright stupid. He's obviously holding back his genius shoulder technique to manipulate you into giving him more money. Contrast this to Clair Davies' tone of wanting to HELP people heal themselves.Clair Davies trigger point book remains the best in terms of compassionate helpful techniques for self-healing. Niel-Asher's book is technically superior and has good illustrations ... but the shoulder section seems deliberately bad because he want to SELL you this information in another format. Yuck.If I buy a book, I expect to see the author's best efforts in the book. Then maybe I'm open to a soft sell. Giving incomplete information as an attempt to lure people into reading/buying more is fine for on-line advertising ... but I don't expect to see it in a book i PAID good money to own.

Partnered with other books and information, this is my favorite because each page is great summary I can flip thru as I use massage ball to work a body part.

Great explanations and drawings, but the earlier editions were clearer and less cluttered with text.

Great for locating pressure points.

As a massage therapist I use this book daily. Highly recommend for any body worker or athlete.

One of the best books out there! This is a must have for your library - it will save you a lot of pain!

This book is set up where you can see a diagram that highlights areas on the body that hurt and then for that area what muscle(s) might have a trigger point. You can then look at stretches that may help or strengthening exercises relieve trigger points. Very useful!

Perfect reference guide.
