The first _Perl Cookbook_ was great. This one is fantastic. When a programming language, operating system, or the like undergoes significant changes, many publishers of technical books seem to have a policy of making the bare minimum of changes to the current edition of their book on the subject and then publishing it as a whole new edition, thicker and with a higher price tag. O'Reilly, by and large, isn't like that; a new edition of any of their books is more often than not a substantial reworking. In this mode, the 1st edition of the _Perl Cookbook_ was obviously intended as a companion volume to _Programming Perl_; but the present (2nd) edition could stand alone as both a reference manual to the language in general and a source of ideas and working code to be adapted to almost any project. Most everything in _Programming Perl_ is here too, but described differently by the different authors, in a way that I find often makes more sense. For example, the discussion of OOP in Perl (Chapter 13) is much more straightforward than the treatment of the subject in _Programming Perl_ for a programmer who already has significant experience with another object-oriented language (in my case, C++).Bottom line: combined with the embarrassment of riches online at[...], this book should give the intermediate- to experienced-level programmer all they could ever need to write great Perl code.

Your first book on PERL should be "Learning PERL", now in its second edition. It takes you through the basics of PERL in a crystal clear fashion with lots of explanations, exercises, and examples. This should be your second book after you've learned to speak basic PERL. When you want to know the most efficient way to approach specific problems, no other book beats it. A concurrent purchase should be Programming PERL. That book is the definitive book on the language, but you could no more learn to program in PERL from that book than you could learn to speak English by using a dictionary as your textbook.Spread over five chapters, the first portion of this book addresses Perl's basic data types. Chapter 1 covers matters like accessing substrings, expanding function calls in strings, and parsing comma-separated data. It also covers Unicode strings. Chapter 2 tackles oddities of floating-point representation, placing commas in numbers, and pseudo-random numbers. Chapter 3 demonstrates conversions between numeric and string date formats and using timers. Chapter 4 covers everything relating to list and array manipulation, including finding unique elements in a list, efficiently sorting lists, and randomizing them. Chapter 5 concludes the section on basics with a demonstration of the most useful data type, the associative array. The chapter shows how to access a hash in insertion order, how to sort a hash by value, how to have multiple values per key, and how to have an immutable hash.Chapter 6, includes recipes for converting a shell wildcard into a pattern, matching letters or words, matching multiple lines, avoiding greediness, matching nested or recursive patterns, and matching strings that are close to but not exactly what you're looking for. Although this chapter is one of the longest in the book, it could easily have been longer still since every chapter contains uses of regular expressions. It's part of what makes Perl the language that it is.The next three chapters cover the filesystem. Chapter 7 shows recipes pertaining to opening files, locking them for concurrent access, modifying them in place, and storing filehandles in variables. Chapter 8 discusses storing filehandles in variables, managing temporary files, watching the end of a growing file, reading a particular line from a file, handling alternative character encodings like Unicode and Microsoft character sets, and random access binary I/O. Finally, in Chapter 9 there are techniques to copy, move, or delete a file, manipulate a file's timestamps, and recursively process all files in a directory.Chapter 10 through Chapter 13 focus on making your program flexible and powerful. Chapter 10 includes recipes on creating persistent local variables, passing parameters by reference, calling functions indirectly, crafting a switch statement, and handling exceptions. Chapter 11 is about data structures. Here basic manipulation of references to data and functions are demonstrated. Later recipes show how to create elaborate data structures and how to save and restore these structures from permanent storage. Chapter 12, concerns breaking up your program into separate files. The chapter discusses how to make variables and functions private to a module, customize warnings for modules, replace built-ins, trap errors loading missing modules, and use the h2ph and h2xs tools to interact with C and C++ code. Lastly, Chapter 13, covers the fundamentals of building your own object-based module to create user-defined types, complete with constructors, destructors, and inheritance. Other recipes show examples of circular data structures, operator overloading, and tied data types. The next two chapters are about interfaces: one to databases and the other to users. Chapter 14 includes techniques for manipulating DBM files and querying and updating databases with SQL and the DBI module. Chapter 15 covers topics such as clearing the screen, processing command-line switches, single-character input, moving the cursor using termcap and curses, thumbnailing images, and graphing data. The last portion of the book is devoted to interacting with other programs and services. Chapter 16 is about running other programs and collecting their output, handling zombie processes, named pipes, signal management, and sharing variables between running programs. Chapter 17 shows how to establish stream connections or use datagrams to create low-level networking applications for client-server programming. Chapter 18 is about higher-level protocols such as mail, FTP, Usenet news, XML-RPC, and SOAP. Chapter 19, contains recipes for processing web forms, trapping their errors, avoiding shell escapes for security, managing cookies, shopping cart techniques, and saving forms to files or pipes. Chapter 20, covers non-interactive uses of the Web, such as fetching web pages, automating form submissions in a script, extracting URLs from a web page, removing HTML tags, finding fresh or stale links, and parsing HTML. Chapter 21 introduces mod_perl, the Perl interpreter embedded in Apache. It covers fetching form parameters, issuing redirections, customizing Apache's logging, handling authentication, and advanced templating with Mason and the Template Toolkit. Finally, Chapter 22 is about ubiquitous data format XML and includes recipes such as validating XML, parsing XML into events and trees, and transforming XML into other formats.

Man! This like the Perl Black Book, has continuous examples that keep you typing away and repeatedly so that you see different angles of each Perl features, such as different ways of writing out arrays, subroutines, etc...

A good many years ago I was assigned a relatively simple programming job- modify an application front-end written in C for a university so that it could be used at our school. The more I looked at it, the more I realized it would be simpler to just rewrite it from scratch, and the more I looked into rewriting it, the more it became apparent that it would be faster and simpler to learn Perl and write it in Perl than to try and do it on our system in C. I looked around for a good Perl reference, and this one came to hand. The quickest way to learn how to program in a new language and environment is to study examples of good programming practice, and that's what the Perl Cookbook provides. Everything I needed to do- parsing input, pattern matching, console I/O, invoking applications and collecting return codes- was all here, along with examples of the way Perl programmers really work. I learned how to use &_, both explicitly and implicitly, and how to simplify input into a simple "while ()"- in short, how to write Perl like a pro.

This is a first and best of the O'Reilly cookbooks. A few people have told me, "I don't know Perl, I just use the cookbook." It's sad but true. But it shine well on the book that has recipes for literally all the basic stuff you will need on a daily basis with multiple version of each solution so that you can pick the one that works best for you.

Most O'Reilly Perl titles imply you'll learn something useful. Only Learning Perl and the Perl Cookbook fully come through in that regard. The Perl Cookbook features some very practical solutions to some very practical problems (in Perl).I find myself coming back to this one again and again - more so than Learning Perl, Programming Perl, Programming the Perl DBI, or Perl Best Practices. This is The One. The book to use to learn the Right Way to perform quite a large number of useful functions or tasks in Perl.

I have been using Perl for many years and consider myself an advanced user. I own well over a dozen Perl books (8 published by O'Reilly), and this is the one that continually gets cracked open (it has tape on the spine -- always a good sign). The book is a little more accessible than the Programming Perl book, and it covers tons of various solutions. It's a valuable addition to the toolbox.

Heavily used useful reference in my library.

Excellent deep analysis of what persons who are not in the majority of Americans, gleans from Hollywood movies. His analysis of Hollywood films, indicates the hidden intent of those films. For persons of color, those films are toxic to their self-esteem. A book that every American could deepen their understanding of how and for whom, the American culture favors and positions for success.

This is a short read, but keep in mind it is a critical essay on certain classic movies. Baldwin gives a non bias sharp approach to each and every venue. It is a masterpiece and should be read as such.

Novel, short story, play, poetry, essays, I don’t care. If James Baldwin wrote it, I’ll read it and be awed by his ferocity and elegance with language. The Devil Finds Work was a fine example of this, and I look forward to digging into more. 4/5(Originally posted on Goodreads)

An interesting and insightful view of racism in older movies . FYI--Historical commentary as opposed to contemporary film criticism.

One of the preeminent writers of the Harlem Renaissance and Black literature in general, this was my first foray into James Baldwin territory. Occasionally, people laud over certain people because they produce a lot as opposed to producing productive work. Now I understand Mr. Baldwin's acclaim and celebration. He is a genius! And I truly enjoyed how he intertwines anecdotes from his personal life into breaking down the impact of media images on our consciousness. His work was so poignant in my life that it prompted me to name my media analysis blog after this books namesake. Mr. Baldwin has earned rightful earned his reputation as one of the greatest writers of his time and beyond.

This is bright light, beaming into some of the most hidden places in America and American history with supreme personal honesty and recall. For anyone who takes film seriously as a - potentially - civilizing medium, this book is incandescent.

Bought this as a gift for my brother. Fast shipping, great quality and he LOVES it.

I really enjoy the way James writes!

Purchased several books for grandaughters headed to the Grand Canyon for the first time. THIS was their favorite. This is what they were eager to pursue when they arrived at the canyon to the delight of their tour guides. Great introduction to the animals that roam this landscape, the tools used to identify and locate them and the "other" way to look at the canyon. And must add, the adults had as much fun with it as the children!

If you celebrate the entire collection of national park "poop" books as I do you will find that the stories are eerily similar. Those kids don't remember much but boy does mom know a LOT about poop!

great book

In a good way though. I saw this book in the Grand Canyon Park, but did not buy it then. When I got home, it was available on Amazon for a little less money. The grandkids love it...you now, talking about "Poop". They think its hilarious. S if you need to now what wild animals are lurking around your home, this is the book to buy.

My children love this series of books

Appeals to kids who love saying an on-the-edge word!

Reads very well and educational. Purchased for a 3 and 4 yr old.

This is a hilarious (and educational book). The book came in great condition; you cannot even tell it was pre-owned.

I consider this book a perfect primer on the subject of insects. I have always taken a copy of it on every interstate trip I have ever gone on to answer the inevitable question. " Daddy, what kind of bug is this?" The text is clear and concise. The illustrations are perfect, extremely accurate, lifelike, as well as pleasing to the eye. And the little maps adjoining every text are a very clever way to deliver that information without taking up a lot space. The quality and format of the entire Zim natural history sets the standard for all the rest. This is a quick reference format. One animal, one page of info and a portrait of said creature. The illustrations are top notch, perfectly done to show the subject in life like detail and coloration. I have always found the paintings to be much more pleasing to the eye than dead photographs. It should be noted that this is a quick reference guide, not an encyclopedia. While every major or common insect family may be covered, this is not meant to include every species of beetle or butterfly in the continental USA.There are a number of more comprehensive field guides that attempt that heady task. This is a general guide to illustrate the most common or conspicuous creatures found in a given area. I was first given this book, along with several other Zim guide books on different animal groups, ,a,mammals, fish, and reptiles. I read and reread them because they sparked my curiosity about each subject to the point that no one had to prod me into opening them. Today there are hundreds of flamboyantly illustrated, oversize tomes written in any number of styles. Many times they are full of dramatic photographs with amazing close ups. But after looking up a particular insect one can easily come away wondering what the bug actually looks like. Other tomes are huge and meant to be, they are covering the most ubiquitous form of life on earth. But whether shopping for a budding back yard naturalist, or to satisfy casual curiosity, this particular book on insects is the best illustrated and best written I have ever seen. I have never been without a copy and over my life time I have had to replace one worn out copy after another.

Good story for kids.

The paperback arrived in good condition and had excellent drawn photos throughout. I foresee myself purchasing more from this collection as gifts for my nephews. There are enough photos to keep the not-so-good reader interested, not to mention the stories of the famous and no-as-famous people.

My 7 year old is into aviation, but I liked this book (and so did he) as a way to relate famous flyers to the children they once were, at the age my son is now. This is the kind of book kids will learn history from, when it is interesting and relevant to them. It also discusses what qualities he had as a person, from the time he was young, that allowed him to succeed at what he enjoyed. My son enjoyed it very much.

In keeping with the Centennial of Flight -- Rebeccasreads recommends this book as a look at how Eddie Rickenbacker, an Ohio farm boy with Swiss roots, grew up to become a World War 1 Flying Ace, a founder of our commercial aviation, a pioneer racecar driver & the owner of no less than the famed Indianpolis 500 Speedway.Originally published 80 years ago, Patria Press is re-issuing the Young Patriot Series -- all fine stories about the childhoods of many of our heroes & heroines.

Great book. My 5 year old son loved it. He is kind of an aviation nerd!

Batman: The Animated Series is one of the best American cartoons ever aired, and certainly the best Batman one.In this book TAS creators Bruce Timm and Paul Dini present one of their classic, award-winning comic stories Mad Love. Mad Love tells the origins of the Joker's equally psychotic girlfriend Harley Quinn and puts the spotlight on their dysfunctional relationship. The story is funny, scary and sad all at once. It is a masterpiece. In order to pad out the 72 page story DC throws in several other Batman TAS stories by Dini and Timm but also with John Byrne and even classic Archie Comics artist Dan DeCarlo. All of them are small gems, not masterpieces like Mad Love they'll make you smile.I'm not sure this was worth getting at the premium hardcover price but it's certainly worth getting as a paperback or at a discount.

I was never that interested comics when I was a kid, I'd rather watch the animated series. But now that I'm older, my interest for comics is growing. This makes a great addition to my comic book collection. Not to mention the nostalgia it brings every time I read it.

I usually hate buying books or comics new because they're generally high priced for such quick reads. This however was so worth it! I enjoyed every moment of it and will probably read again! I bought this for insight into Harley's back story and it was phenomenal! Bruce and Paul's commentary was great and insight into some of batmans other villains are great! Good starter comic for those wanting to get into Harley Quinn or introductions to Batman's other rivals! The product itself came very quickly! (One day delivery) and was in pristine condition! It's a good size as there are quite of few comics included and the print and color is fabulous quality!

I'm a huge Batman fan, my husband and I have a huge collection of graphic novels. I've always loved the art style from the animated Batman tv series, so after purchasing- Batman Harley & Ivy- I searched for more of Paul Dini and Bruce Timm's collaborations. Paul Dini has easily become one of my favorite comic book writer's. This collection has 11 stories (some are just a few pages but well worth the price.) I've never been a big fan of the ventriloquist and Scarface but I loved the story with them, though it was bittersweet in the end. I'm thrilled to have this book in my collection. Sorry about the pictures, I prefer to buy comics rather than upgrade my phone and it's camera. :-)

The main story is of course the main draw here, and it is truly one of the best Batman stories ever told. But this book also features other stories, hence the name, from various annuals and anthology series. All are worth the purchase. Not to mention a foreword by Paul Dini, anot afterword by Bruce Timm, sketches, cover gallery, all that good stuff.DC recently released "Mad Love Deluxe Edition" and I implore you not to be swindled by that malarky. It's actually just Mad Love without the "Other Stories" or sweet bonus materials. It has other bonus materials but they're mostly sketches and things with no actual word from the creators, and it's more expensive. Stick with this edition.

If you loved the Batman animated series from the 90's you are guaranteed to love this book. It is designed to look and feel like the cartoon, and was partially written and drawn by the creators of the tv series. This book has the Mad Love Harley Quinn origin story as well as two Batman Adventures Annuals. The paper quality is very nice. Glossy, nice finish, thick. The stories are really fun, especially Mad Love. I want to rev my Harley... Vroom! Vroom!

I bought this as a birthday gift for a special young woman who is a Harley Quinn and its only fitting she should read the origin story of the Joker's girlfriend who has been a fan-favorite for over 25 years now. I hope she likes it.

This story was fun and interesting, but I Bought the Animated Series first so it wasn't anything I hadn't seen already. If You don't want to buy Batman the Animated series from the 90's I definitely recommend buying this story so you can get to know Harley Quinn, but you Might feel differently if you have the series already because you are basically just buying the script for the episode Mad Love with literally two added details. In fact most of the stories are directly from the series so you won't really be adding all that much Bat-Knowledge to your repertoire with one or two exceptions. But if you are a collector this is definitely a good product.

Review

“A powerful, richly researched history. . . . Fascinating. . . . Passionately engaged. . . . Nuanced and human. . . . Shlaim’s blow-by-blow account of Hussein’s career reads as a somberly addictive saga. . . . King Hussein’s whole life was spent in foreign affairs, and his story becomes the story of the Middle East over half a century.”—New York Review of Books“King Hussein was a leader of remarkable vision, commitment and humanity. . . . Shlaim brilliantly lays out Hussein’s search for tranquility for his country and his neighbors, and the obstacles his negotiating partners put in his way.”—The Washington Post“An absorbing diplomatic chronicle. . . . [Shlaim’s] authority, and tenacity, are undeniable. . . . His narrative is gripping. . . . Shlaim details every move, much like a crime reporter covering an interminable gang war, marveling at the young boss’s ability to play for a draw or make his own luck. . . . Step by step, he guides us through the opportunities the players did not miss a chance to miss.”—The Nation“Excellent. . . . A particularly valuable account of Hussein’s relations with Israel and the Palestinians.”—The New York Times Book Review“Shlaim is an Iraqi-born academic, reared in Israel and long resident in Britain, who writes about the Middle East with exceptional wisdom and insight. . . . [He] tells the story extremely well.”—Max Hastings, Sunday Times (London)“The most authoritative biography of [King Hussein]. . . . He emerges from under Shlaim’s microscope as honest, fundamentally decent and, in a region noted for its brutality and treachery, notably merciful and kind. In his personal dealings, most strikingly with the Israelis, he was especially gracious. . . . Without his relentless diplomacy (conducted often along those secret channels), the region might be even bloodier than it is already.”—The Economist“A thrilling, masterful biography.”—Simon Sebag Montefiore, Sunday Telegraph (London), Book of the Year“Riveting. . . . Artful. . . . Thoroughly informed.”—Wall Street Journal“A highly readable account of the courageous, astute and sometimes impulsive leader of ‘an impecunious and insignificant desert kingdom.’”—Financial Times“Remarkable. . . . Shlaim tells [this story], for all its complicated scholarship and historical allusion, with genuine compassion. . . . He has worried his way through subterfuge and mendacity, terrorist threat and open warfare, to establish Hussein’s credentials as a genuine champion of peace.”—Jan Morris, Guardian (London)“All would-be Middle East peacemakers should read [Lion of Jordan]. For Shlaim shows not only how attempts at peacemaking in the region have failed, but also why.”—Sunday Telegraph (London)“Shlaim is the sort of historian every country needs. An exposer of national myths, [he is] the supreme scholar of Arab-Israeli negotiations. . . . For many years [Lion of Jordan] will remain the standard work on King Hussein.”—The Spectator“Superb. . . . [Shlaim] not only has the twists and turns of the Arab-Israeli conflict at his fingertips but understands better than most why it has twisted or turned.”—New Statesman “If one wishes to personalise the political history of the Middle East in the second half of the 20th century, there is no better choice of subject than Hussein bin Talal. . . . [Lion of Jordan] captures well the noble aspirations of its subject.”—Daily Telegraph (London)“Shlaim’s stinging critique of Israel might stir controversy, but his comprehensive, nuanced account of Hussein’s life illuminates the tragic complexities of Middle Eastern politics.”—Publishers Weekly“Wide-ranging and well-documented. . . . Shlaim’s book gives us a better understanding of a major politician.”—The Observer (London)

A truly extrodinary account of every detail of King Hussien's lifelong quest for a place for his kingdom at the table of respected nations of the world - primarily by pushing for peace in his region at any cost (most often through secret contact with his Israeli nemeses). He was not without errors in this quest, and he benefitted personally ($$) probably more than he should have, but this is the story of an exceptional person on an extrodinary journey who regularly showed more character than either his Isreali or American counterparts. This is the striking aspect of the book -- the lack of good faith (or even honesty) on the part of the leaders of Isreal and USA. It makes an American with an open mind a little uncomfortable with the actions of our leaders - congressional, but also presidents. BUT, the book is as detailed as it could be and focuses on the quest, the policies, and the political experience of this fine man, this amazing king.

I preferred the bio of Queen Noor to get a feel for the king's life, personality, diplomatic efforts, and Near Eastern problems. The Near East has, for past 80 years, been a total mess and impossible for one man to solve. Read this book onlyt if you are really, reallyinto Near East politics.

While history is, on one level, facts, there are always different perspectives from which those facts are viewed. It is worthwhile reading many perspectives to gain a better understanding of events. This book portrays the late King Hussein's quest for peace and his desire to preserve the Hashemite dynasty. It follows his life from a young boy who witnesses the horrific murder of his beloved grandfather, to his own death after a long reign on the throne of Jordan.I was interested in reading of familiar events from a different perspective than the one I got from the media in South Africa when they were taking place. However, there were times when I found the writing style difficult to follow and there was a sense of ploughing my way through the book in parts. If I had not already been fascinated by the land and people of Jordan I may well not have finished the book; although it was well worth reading right to the end.

Hussein's life was principled on the premise that " King Hussein was fundamentally and structurally a client king ...for all practical purposes the Hashemite legacy inherited from his grandfather was one of continuing dependence on the West." P.154His wide recognition, acclaim and complexity were due to " the principle of balancing applied at all levels: the inter -Arab, the regional, (domestic) and the global...this meant balancing between Arab and conservatives and Arab radicals, between the Arab world on the one hand and Israel on the other, and the global level between the West and the Soviet bloc...The survival of the Hashemite dynastic interests were paramount (and) the guiding principle behind his foreign policy, the key to constant shits and maneuvers , to all the alliances and realignments " P.212With these two elements as the deciding factors in Hussein's life, Avi Shlaim delivers a superb biography that is well written, researched, revealing, passionate and to a great extent objective.Regardless if one agrees or not with the King's inherited role, he was able to save his dynasty and country.Although King Hussein's life revolved on the previous mentioned principles, not all of the King's actions can be aligned with those principles if one takes a simplistic view of those actions without serious reflection and reading between the lines. Avi Shlaim does an excellent job on analyzing the King and his actions from the day he reached the thrown until the last moments on his deathbed. For example, when Iraq invaded Kuwait, the King sided with Iraq, which is contradictory to King's " balancing principle." However, after reading the author's analysis and the foreign/domestic challenges facing the King, the King through careful policies and outstanding foresight was able to save his country and dynasty from Iraq, Israel and from domestic upheavals.Even though the King had a "special" relationship with Israel for many reasons, which are explored in the book, the King realized the only way to have the support of Washington was through Israel. This is revealed when King Hussein gave Bush I a memo that stated in part, in his (the king's) judgment the Arab-Israeli conflict was not a foreign policy for the US but rather a domestic US issue due to the domestic influences in the US on the issue. P 478 Although not comprehensible to the King, this an obstacle to peace in the region.Another example is when President Clinton at the request of King Hussein was unable to sway congress to forgive Jordan's debt to the US. Clinton in turn asked for the help of Rabin. " Yes Mr. President," replied Rabin slowly we will do our best. To the Jordanians present at this brief exchange provided a remarkable demonstration of the political clout wielded by Israel and its friends on Capitol Hill" p 545During the peace negotiations with Israel, King Hussein was very calculating with extreme foresight, Unlike Arafat who in my judgment was incompetent to lead his people's cause and prone to miscalculation and countless poor judgments before and after the peace treaty. To Israel's satisfaction, Arafat committed a huge blunder by going behind the King's back to negotiate with Israel a separate peace treaty with Israel.King Hussein, in his correct judgment believed the agreement Arafat reached with Israel was vague, imprecise, and that substantive issues (Jerusalem, borders, refugees) were not addressed in the accord but left for future negotiations. " No one with any sense would sign a treaty first and discuss its technical clauses afterwards." P 533 King Hussein told Rabin when he asked the King to follow in the footsteps of the Peace treaty reached with the PLO.These are some of the examples, perhaps not the most important, but nevertheless revealing on why I thought this an outstanding book on the life of King Hussein.

Love this story knowing how much this king suffered to keep this kingdom up

Remembering the love of the Jordanians for their leader, this book relates many of the triumphs of his time as King of Jordan. He accepted hundreds/thousands of Palestinian refugees from their homeland in Palestine/Israel when the Israeli govt relieved them of their right to live in their own land.

Always admired King Hussein and reading this book made me realize even more what a great loss we suffered with his death.

Best Historical Scholarly Book on the History of Jordan and the Hashemite Dynasty in Jordan. Recommend: The King's Council by Jack O'Connel which is less scholarly but still a good read and some good new insights.
