Richard E. Nisbett, PhD, has taught psychology at Yale and currently teaches at the University of Michigan, where he is the Theodore M. Newcomb Distinguished University Professor. Realizing that there are two different ways to describe the world (namely, focusing on objects or focusing on relations) is very beneficial. Why? Once we realize that there is a wholly different approach to the world, we are more able to detach from our habitual conceptual frameworks. That obviously fosters interpersonal communication and reduces fanaticism. Those in turn foster living together more harmoniously. This book is very readable. It's by a psychologist and cites easily understood studies. (By way of contrast, philosophers [like me!] who treat the same topic can be much more difficult to understand.) Especially if you are unfamiliar with the fundamental dichotomy discussed, I recommend this book.

The first question I have is: how does the author know any of this?Does he speak Chinese? Did he live there?The second question is with his competence in the subject of study. (Let's remember that he is a social psychologist, and not a historian.) One glaring error is that he leaves out Legalism entirely. Legalism has a very long history in China, and almost as long as that of Confucianism. How he missed that is beyond me.The third question is with the intellectual Foundation of treating civilizations that were in Chinese orbit as offshoots of China.Japan took a lot of ideas from China, but they also had no problem with adapting to different ways. (Korea is a similar example that happened much later).Vietnam was a Chinese Colony for a thousand years, but they aren't quite the same thing as China nor the same thing as Japan and Korea.I wonder if a better way to take this could have been to describe the thought process in terms of geographic factors, (a la "Guns, Gems, and Steel" by Jared Diamond). To wit: China was a huge, self contained hegemon and it was fairly homogeneous, and so there was no conflict of ideas because no one would ever meet someone with different ideas. And therefore no reason to develop these thought processes.Japan and Korea were both smaller places, and so they had to develop the techniques of dealing with new ideas.Greece was composed of a number of small city-states, and so is there any mystery that they were used to working with and evaluating new ideas?Even then, to treat it in that way would need some qualifications. People in coastal places like Guangdong and Fujian have been merchants and seafaring people from hundreds of years, and some new ideas are something to which they have become accustomed.I also have questions with this type of reasoning in general. If you have an idea of the principles of Darwinian evolution (such as it is), it doesn't mean that you can go forward and predict the existence of when antibiotic resistance will occur or what new species will exist thousands of years before the event.And if you can go backwards and create ex post facto explanations, then so what?And then the explanations that a person wants depends on which questions they ask. (I lived in China for many years. 11, by my count.) And I noticed that Chinese people had the most difficult time using processes that had already been developed.So, there would be an International Baccalaureate curriculum that was already developed, but they could not maintain the program because they just could not follow the instructions in the way that they were detailed.If that happens to have been my slice of reality, would I have predicted it from this book? Or, is it just a trivial empirical observation about something that I should take as read for future reference?There's also discussion of a number of "big picture" theories. Marxism. Sociology. These theories are huge, broad and expansive, but they are extremely useless for limited, specific, REAL LIFE predictions.So, it happens that Continental Europeans make bigger theories. So now what?It feels like this author is trying to develop the intellectual Foundation to explain something whose existence he could never have predicted anyway.And so the (fourth) question comes again..... "So what?"If your time to read books is limited, I recommend that you give this one a miss. And read the Jared Diamond book in preference to it.

For those who would like to have a solid knowledge and grasp of the root causes of cultural differences - this is the best book I've come across.

The field of psychology has long been dominated by a `universalist' position in which the results of experiments (often using American college students as subjects) have been generalized to the whole of humankind, and the complicating role of culture conveniently ignored. Therefore, as a cultural anthropologist, China specialist, and writer on cross-cultural aspects of visual perception, I was especially interested in this persuasive book by a leading social psychologist who has recently abandoned the universalist view.Nisbett is at his best when he uses the results of various research studies as a platform for generalizing about differences between East and West. For those of us who work in related fields (anthropology, philosophy, international relations, international business, etc.), Nisbett's conclusions are neither new nor surprising. What makes his book worth reading is the way in which he effectively brings evidence from the field of social psychology into the discourse about East-West differences.Chapters address cultural differences related to the construction of psycho-social self, styles of argumentation and negotiation, perceptions of parts vs. wholes, attributions of causality, relations between language and thought, models of logic and inference, and so on. Nisbett is at his weakest when opining about ancient `social origins of mind' where he conveniently glosses over the complexities of history. This chapter could (and perhaps should) have been omitted without affecting the overall integrity of the book.The Geography of Thought is most useful for a general audience or for undergraduate students in comparative cultural studies. It's easy to read; it's clearly written; it presents the reader with a level of analysis and understanding that is more substantial than ordinary generalizations and stereotypes; and it does not overly burden the reader with technical details about the research.Scholars, on the other hand, are apt to find points of irritation. The end-notes, for example, consist merely of citations, whereas the author easily could have (and to my mind should have) used this venue to provide a finer grain of detail about the studies to which he refers. Also problematic are the occasional lapses into describing Asian thought systems in terms of "absence", "lack", and "failure to develop", which reinforces an `orientalist' perspective of the cultural other as a negative mirror of ourselves. Nisbett's limited comprehension of the dynamics of Chinese linguistic meaning construction prompts him to misleading assertions at a low level of analysis (e.g., that "there is no word for `size' " and "no suffix equivalent to `ness' in Chinese", p. 17-18). China scholars will also be annoyed by the unacknowledged inconsistency of Romanization systems (sometimes Wade-Giles, sometimes Pinyin) and his references (pp. 71, 121) to the early `80s as "toward the end of the Cultural Revolution" (which actually ended in 1976). Such flaws should have been identified and corrected through broader peer reviews and informed editing.

I'm a big King in Yellow fan, and this book brought an interesting take on that character.

Cool book. It’s three adventures set in three time periods so you could make a campaign out of it of sorts.

Considering my obsession with Call of Cthulhu RPG books, I loved it. The three scenarios were provocative, interesting and twisty, the way you expect it to be.

As with all Chaosium products, this is a very high quality production. I get as much fun reading these adventures as I do playing them.

The great thing about "Ripples From Carcosa" (hereinafter RFC) is that it covers three scenarios in three different settings which can be run individually or as a loosely tied campaign. Cynics will argue this is merely a means for Chaosium to make money but I'd counter with the fact that all three of these are awesome settings so why would you cheat yourself with such a limiting belief? Besides, you don't necessarily need to pick up the supplements to run each setting anyway.The original RFC came out in 2005 as a monograph by Oscar Rios. Since then it has been revamped in preparation for the release of Call of Cthulhu RPG 7th edition which means this is a 7th edition set of scenarios, people. In addition, editing has put certain side chapters in better spots and there is more artwork as well as maps compared to the original monograph. In the back of this 135 page PDF are several handouts which include maps you can show to your players.RFC starts with a brief introduction to Hastur, the Yellow Sign and various avatars and such which serve him. After each scenario there is a coverage of how Hastur is worshipped which include cults to suit the era and future adventure seeds. What ensues after a false lull of vacationing becomes something of survival horror mixed in with a driving quest. There's a good map overview of the resort town and I like how Oscar Rios spent time evoking the era of Ancient Rome especially with little details that tell you he has a true love for the era. For this particular scenario the clue trails are fairly straight forward but the means to how various people lose their sanity are close to golden. This is arguably the most straight forward scenario of the three. I would recommend it for new groups to the Mythos. The objectives are easily understood and the clue trails to get to the end are easy enough yet arguably moderately hard for those completely new to this type of tabletop gaming. For a new group the keeper needs to decide if he/she will tone down the chance for a total party kill or keep it as is.CTHULHU DARK AGES SCENARIO: Saxon England has recently been conquered by the Normans and a Norman lord charges the players with investigating a bard of the Saxon people who feels wronged by a broken agreement. It all seems harmless at first but that's how some of these scenarios open up, right? Of the three scenarios this is arguably the most mind bending in reality so be prepared to give vivid descriptions to your players. In addition, the players will be doing a great deal of traveling through the fiefdom. This one also has a nice play on the Carcosa mythology. I would recommend this especially for keepers who have players who typically do fantasy gaming though warn them it will be different even if familiar in some instances.Clue trails are moderately difficult with a wide variety of different endings.END TIMES MONOGRAPH SCENARIO: the PCs play humans on a space cruiser when they meet an enemy ship and encounter startling information which could end the remaining humans once and for all. The nice part of scenario is that I rarely get to run Cthulhu scenarios in space. In addition, there's a really nice idea tied into a virtual reality in which the players must travel into it to fix a problem and along the way they get to experience the last days of Earth before it falls. Nice build on the Hastur Mythos as well as a few others that I cannot mention without moderate spoilers. The clue trails are moderate as the players have more options and a variety of choices. For gamers not familiar with Science Fiction this might very well be the most difficult of the three.Overall, the strength of this 7E product is that you get to experience three Mythos eras outside of the standard 1920s and then if you like any of them you can decide if you wish to invest in the supplements. Additionally, the ideas within those scenarios and the adventure seeds could potentially give you a campaign and arguably you don't need the supplements if money is tight for you. Lastly, you get three scenarios written by Oscar Rios who in my opinion is one of the top five writers in the last ten years for Chaosium's Call of Cthulhu RPG line.What's not to like?

My 12-year-old daughter loves these! Buying them with her own money has motivated her to do extra work around the house!

I bought this for my son so he would read something with female main characters. I would read this even if I didn't have kids. Love everything out the book. The characters. The art. It's all great. Get them all.

My youngest had a bit of a hard time finding books she liked to read. The husband took her to the game shop one day and she picked out the first in this series and her reading took off. I've been ordering her all of them as soon as they come out, she just gobbles them up.

I couldn’t wait to dive into this one after reading the other two. What I was immediately put off by was the new art style. I wasn’t thrilled about it because I loved the past artwork, but I pushed forward and I'm happy I did! It ended up being pretty awesome. Looking back I guess I just wasn’t sure what to think about it and was holding onto the first two. So friends, keep an open mind... I REALLY loved this one. I felt like the story was more thought out and allowed me to get more invested.I also got to know more about each of the girl and their personalities which allowed me to connect with them all individually. I LOVED how aggressive and goal orientated April was. It reminded me of myself haha But the part about decorating cakes killed me especially because of Ripley. It was adventurous and humorous and I hope this series continues in this direction!!

I love this series! The art style is amazing! The author is awesome! I love comic books and this series is definitely one of my favorites!

My son and I rip through Lumberjanes. All I can say is: glad they exist. LOVE THEM

A new acquaintance recently introduced me to "Frederick," a charming, very short children's picture book about a family of field mice who are preparing for the winter. One of them, a young mouse named Frederick, does not do much work and appears to be shirking his responsibilities. Frederick explains to his skeptical family that he IS working by quietly gathering imaginary sun rays for the cold winter days to come.The book ends with the mice experiencing a tough winter, and then being inspired to carry on by a poem Frederick has created that grew out of his meditations when his family members thought he was being lazy. It's a really nice story about how we all have different ways of making contributions, and that important work is not always readily visible, especially creative endeavors.The book also has some exercises for children, including one that guides a participant into writing a poem. If you read this story to a child and then make a poem together, it'll make a sweet project! A few of the words in the story are a bit advanced for young children, which offers a nice vocabulary building opportunity and does not detract from the story.What I like best about "Frederick" is that it acknowledges that we humans are not all the same, and that we need our different talents and personalities to "make it through the winter." It might be especially nice to share with that child in your life who "marches to the beat of a different drummer."

This was my favorite book as a child (some 50 years ago!!), so when I discovered that my 2-year old nephew was already obsessed with books (as I was at his age), this was the first book I thought of for him - along with several other books by Leo Lionni - for Christmas. He LOVES it!! Leo Lionni as a wonderful way of normalizing the "outcast" - he makes it okay to be "different." What could be better for a child? I can't recommend a children's book more highly than this one!!

This is a great little paperback! I use this with students to teach compare/contrast-- we read the story of the Little Red Hen, and then this, and talk about how there are advantages to working hard but also seeing the beauty in the world. One of my favorite lessons to teach-- it generates lots of questions and insight.

I arrived in perfect condition and was presented as a gift. The look on the recipients face was heartwarming. The book has a powerful message to adults even though it was a kids' book. If you read it as a kid, read it again as an adult and reflect on how your life is balanced.

This is the book we have bought every child we know. We are so grateful that the original, hard cover edition is once again available. A classic, an ode to the poets in our lives, Frederick is one of the world's best children's book.

This was recommended by the pediatrician after my twin boys were born. One of my son's was named Frederick, so this was a must buy. Great story & illustration. FYI... Khol's is selling this line of books & my wife got a bunch of them for a few dollars each along with some stuffed animals to go with the stories.

I got this book for my granddaughter for her birthday. It came after they were here for her birthday (my fault). My youngest son (9) took it to his bedroom and haven't seen it since. Its beauty and timelessness is a winner. Frederick is a dreamer. While the other mice work to put food away for the winter he 'absorbs' the world around him. This was one of my all time favorite books when I was a child. It still makes me smile. Fantastic book. So glad it is still available!

I used read this story as a young child and I loved it, I also loved the bright and colorful pictures. I have been searching for this book for a while now, and I am so glad I have finally found it. I now read this story to my 19 month old as a bedtime story and she loves it too. Hopefully one day (far, far away) she will read it to her little ones as well. This is a must have children's book as, it teaches children it is ok to stop and enjoy the Earth's beautiful environment, and its also ok to be unique. I live by the words of this book, and I hope it is available for generations to come.

Exelent resource!! A must have reference if you want to restore a lot of older stone work, or build with stone. ( most ' masons' in the USA seem to be block and brick layers with little or no training in stone masonry) so weather a professional mason or home owner worth every cent!!

Best book overall for stonemasonry. I've practiced amateur stonemasonry 40+ years; read many different stonemasonry books to learn well. This book provides best overall value of subject matter content (amount & quality) for the money spent & for the time needed to read, practice, & understand well.

I'm not a stonemason nor am I related to one. So when I decided to build a stone wall I needed a resource book that could teach me how to make stone walls. The one kicker is reading is the easy part. Once you get the ideas down the work begins. My first stone wall was a success. This book and a lot of sweat equity was a whole lot cheaper than the going rates of a local contractor.Overall the book is easy to read. The concepts are easy to understand. I read the book over a couple of sessions and got to work.

This book is very well-written and provides clear and easy-to-read technical descriptions of various types of common stone buildings and their construction process. The author is a Scottish stone mason with decades of experience. There are many pictures and detailed construction drawings to go along with the how-to style text. If you had the desire and materials available you could build some of the projects described in this book, a small stone tower for instance, with minimal experience just using the book as a guide. It reads like a textbook and a basic understanding of the trade or at least of reading prints would be helpful. There are some British terms used that don't translate to 'Merican but you'll figure it out through the context.I would highly recommend it if you have any interest in masonry, stonework, architecture or traditional building methods in general. I am a mason and find myself very thankful that people like Ian Cramb are capable writers as well builders and have coherently passed on their knowledge for the following generations.

Interesting enough and did provide a lot of good information. A lot of pictures on various stone structures, but it could have provided a more info on the building process such as how to build the supports for arches and etc. Not a bad book, just not quite five stars.

Interesting book, but it's more a reference than a practical guide. I appreciate the author's effort to put his art on paper and share it with interested readers.

This book had everything in it you could ever possibly want to know about stone masonry. It was overkill for my wall I was building, but very interesting. I'll never use most of what is in this book but I enjoyed reading about the art.

Tip notch book. By a true Craftsman and gentlemen. They don't make guys like this anymore. His expertise is second to none. Illustrations are superb.
