I enjoyed reading this book. Barbara Tuchman is fun to read. I read "The Guns of August" years ago. I have other books by her, but this one caught my eye and I read it in short order. I knew a lot of these things, but it's nice that someone organized them. I would recommend this book highly to anyone interested in the Jewish connection to Israel and Jerusalem, but more importantly to the evangelical Christian connection to a Jewish state and Israel.
Even in this early work, Tuchman displays her skill in threading through complex details without getting lost in the weeds. This story, like few others is fraught with prejudice and narrow readings of events and motives. Tuchman is slightly sympathetic to the Jews, but focuses mainly on the motives and cross purposes of the British. Their Imperial "chutzpa" is truly from a different era-it seems unworldly in the 20th century. And it has proved to be so. Left to be told, is the post Balfour period when it appears due to the mutual stubbornness of Jews and Arabs that reconciliation is never going to be achieved. A Jewish historian got it right - both sides are cemented into roles as righteous victims.

It’s the comprehensive and eruditely told story of Britain’s centuries-long preoccupation with the Holy Land and the Jews.The timeline of BIBLE AND SWORD begins with the agreed-upon fable that the ancestors of the pre-Celtic tribes which settled Britain had their origins in Asia Minor with the descendants of Noah supplemented by the myth that Joseph of Arimathea later arrived on the island to christen the land. Then the Arthurian legend was elaborated to include the Holy Grail and Excalibur (which was King David’s sword).But all was not myth and legend. The exploits of King Richard I (the Lionheart) in the Holy Land as a leader of the Third Crusade are history.In the centuries following the expulsion of the Jews from England in 1290 by King Edward I, guilt over their shabby treatment became a factor. This, combined with a national grounding in a knowledge of the Old Testament and the Jewish prophets and the expectation that the Second Coming would occur only when Jews returned to Britain and to Israel (to be converted), evolved and matured with Theodor Herzl’s Zionism as the catalyst into the Balfour Declaration and the post-World War I British Mandate (which conclude BIBLE AND SWORD). By that time, Britain’s desire to provide the Jews with a homeland was rooted in the less idealistic but more hard-headed and practical need to have a stabile Palestine ‒ populated by a people governed, or at least protected, by the British Empire ‒ to serve as a buffer state to the Suez Canal, which itself was the shortest water route to India, the Jewel in the Imperial Crown.It’s unfortunate that Barbara never wrote a follow-up history of Britain’s failure to stand by its Mandate in the 30 years following its proclamation. During that period, the Mandate became unworkable; but still, Britain cannot be said to have exited with honor.BIBLE AND SWORD is a must read for any understanding of the State of Israel’s presence in the Middle East landscape.
l am a history buff and reading this history was very illuminating. I had no idea that from Cromwell's time forward so many Englishman were both enchanted and involved in Palestine and the Levant. Some were interested in getting a home for the Jewish people because they felt that had to be what was in the area in order for the second coming of Christ. They also wanted England to be in control of the area from the very beginning. They did not plan for it to become and independent state of Israel. Once they controlled Suez they felt they had to have people in the land and they might as well be some Jewish settlers. It was so interesting when the wealthy Jewish Englishman were not interested for themselves , nor were the same type of people from Germany , but the poor and desperate Jews from Poland and Russia wanted that homeland and the Germans and English did not want them in their countries. The whole history from the Norman invasion of Britian to Henry the VIII's seperation from the the Pope and the Catholic Church were well recorded. A long but great read.
Who hasn't wondered how the fate of this ancient country has come to bear on nearly every major political decision of this and previous generations. Tuchman's research and synthesis of the facts provide a startling picture of how England's early involvement in the Holy Land shifted much of the focus of Christianity from New to Old Testament. She shows how the early messages of peace and tolerance taught by Jesus were controverted by zealots bent upon recovering the Temple of Solomon. In many ways, the coercive and doctrinaire legacy of the Puritans is still the bedrock upon which extremist Christian sects continue to shape policy today. This is an important work, and should be read by all.
A bottomless treasure trove of information and detail about England and Palestine; Especially interesting is the time covered from 1800 forward. It gives a great overview of the foundations laid for the current complexities in the Middle East today. Tuchman is a fine historian.
This is the first book published by Barbara Tuchman and it is as good as her later works such as the acclaimed "The Guns of August" bestseller. This books relates the relation between England and Palestine since the early history of Christianity. It is a great historic tour along many centuries, Barbara Tuchman is a great writer and all that history is interesting and entertaining. She doesn't deal with the thorny questions of modern Palestine but her book provides a great background to understand that land and the peoples who claim it as their own. Highly recommended.
Like all of Tuchman's works, I pleasant read packed with information that stands the test of time. A good brick in the foundation of understanding the current situation in the Middle & Near East.
