Check your books, three chapters of mine were upside down. Amazon made it right which is why it got two stars.

Needed this book for a Medical Aspects of Disability course and heard that the class itself was intensive. This book calmed my fears because the information included in the book isn't too technical and is easy to understand. Throughout the chapters, they bring up previous terms so it solidifies in your mind what the term means and how it applies across various conditions. Definitely would recommend for a good introduction to conditions.

I got my book and started to read through it. As I did this, a good chunk of the book is upside down and the chapters are not in order. Not pleased, seeing as this was not a warning that came when I bought the book.

Good book in great condition however while studying I’ve noticed that some of the pages are printed upside down. Some of the chapters as also mixed in between other chapters. Might just be a printing error.

This textbook is very clear and easy to understand. Usually college textbooks use a lot of jargon not this one. I'm learning so much from reading it. I will use it as a reference even after I'm done with the class I'm currently taking.

An amazing book! I read this as part of a course on rehabilitation counseling and opened my eyes to many issues that individuals with disabilities face. One doesn't have to know a lot of anatomy to follow this book. I learned so much! It was worth every penny.

I enjoyed this book. Wish I would have realized it was book 2 before I got to far into it. Now I need to read book 1. Great mostly clean book (until the end)

Very enjoyable time travel romance with appealing characters and an entertaining plot. A bit on the predictable side, but still enchanting in its own way. I wished there had been more of the realistic aspects of going from modern times to the past, but that wasn’t the focus of this novel. It had more of a fairytale feeling to it.

This is another great story! So much conflict, jealousy, betrayal, but most of all friendship and love. Gretchen finds her true heart in Scottish warrior Ewan. They fight battles within, battles with each other, and battles with others. But don't worry, love wins every time!

Again this novel over shot my expectations. Characterization was on point and obviously the author had thoroughly researched this era in Scottish history. Obviously it becomes difficult to change the plot of girl meets highlander and danger and loves ensues. However the journey itself is well spent.

I enjoyed the story of Gretchen who has traveled through time to find her best friend, the love of her life and to keep the threads of time from unraveling.

I love these characters! Gretchen and Ewan are the perfect couple.You could tell they had that "Love at First Sight" thing you g on. I wish I could find my own Ewan...Thank you

Nice story, minimal typo and grammatical errors. Could use a bit more character development. Fine beach read, not the best but certainly not the worst of the genre

It is always hard to review comic adaptations, particularly since Lapham is adapting a book that was paired with a television show. Del Toro's book, with Chuck Hagan, and the television show are all marked with his aesthetic, but often more prosaic flaws are in the source material as the characters are somewhat predictable for the genre. As an adaption and an addition to the television show, this works very well, and can be enjoyed as such. As a comic in it's own right, the narrative pacing is good, the art is interesting but not quite arresting, but the character's don't pop. Furthermore, some of the strangeness of the aesthetic seems muted or lost on the comic page.The backstory set-up and the slow reveal feel more of television than a comic, and lots of the elements are somewhat tried: vampirism as virus, bits of Dracula lore, Romania and Nazis, affairs between doctors in an epidemic. This could be more engaging in and of itself, but even in blending these different things together, the plot moves like you would expect it to move and comes together how one would expect it to come together. Lapham does good work with what he was given as does Mike Huddleston but the limitations build up. I do think fans of the show will enjoy it, and there is just enough to keep me interested in later volumes.

I am a HUGE fan of the show and found out recently they have also produced a GN of it. Seeing as the original story is bulletproof in its creativity, I figured odds were pretty good that this would be an enjoyable read -- I wasn't disappointed - the story runs along the same lines of the show, but cuts loose the filler parts (Fets "girlfriend" is not included --THANK YOU!!) and is so unfettered by unneeded sub-plot lines I actually learned MORE about the story then from the FX series.The art work is great and lends well with the vibe of the story. I bought the hardcover at a deal (which I HIGHLY recommend!) and now I HAVE to pick up the 2nd one because its was SOOOO good. This work only cements Del Toro "cool" creditability in my eyes.

THE STRAIN is a solid vampire thriller and is excellent in graphic novel form. Some reviewers have complained that the story is cliche, and to some extent they are right in that THE STRAIN is not completely original -- it is a story clearly in the tradition of Stoker's DRACULA.The tale begins with a plane landing in at the JFK with its crew and passengers mysteriously dead and a coffin full of dirt stowed away in its cargo hold -- a scene that pays homage to Count Dracula's infamous landing in London. The rest of the story proceeds similarly, the scenes and characters repeatedly tying back to Stoker's classic tale of vampirism (including a vampire-slayer/professor) while still remaining refreshingly modern.Although good, THE STRAIN, VOLUME 1 is not without its flaws. The story itself is strong, but most of characters (including the lead) are somewhat bland; however, since this volume is just the beginning of the tale, hopefully they'll be more fully fleshed-out in future volumes. Additionally, the artwork takes some getting used to -- the covers are fantastic, but Huddleston's work is a bit inconsistent. Mostly the characters and figures are relatively detailed and well-drawn, but sometimes panels feature oddly distorted figures that seem out of place. This distracted me at first, but by the end of the book I scarcely noticed.THE STRAIN is perhaps not the best vampire comic out there (that would probably be Snyder's AMERICAN VAMPIRE), but it is nonetheless solid, entertaining, and horrific enough to be a welcome break from more sparkly vampire fiction.

Book is in good shape but the cover is missing half of the picture as if someone tried to rip off a tag and took the picture with it.

Adapted from a the trio of novels by the same name, this comic book series is fantastic. The art is amazing and the story is well intact from the novels. Way way too many "book" snobs are looking down at this comic series simply because it is a comic series. It retains the same great story from the novels and adds in fantastic comic book art.If you love a great story, fantastic art and awesome horror you won't be let down.Buy all the additional volumes as well. All are 5 stars!

Not a comic-book person typically, but this is a solid casual "read." The premise is cool, if not a little ridiculous, but hey we're talking about vampires here.I got this comic because I want to compare this to the TV series and possibly the novel as well.Reading it on my iPad using the Kindle app has been a great experience.

After buying all of the novels and watching the tv show a million times over. I decided to buy the graphic novel. I just finished this one and I am so glad I did. The colors are vivid and dark. The strigoi look amazing and the story is as dark and scary as ever! Great item to any Strain lovers household.

This is the first Susan Howatch novel I've read in many years. Back in my twenties, she was one of my favorite writers. No one can do Gothic romance family sagas like Howatch! The story suffers early on from the "talking heads" style of writing, but soon becomes a gripping tale of hero Charles Ashworth's struggle to leave behind the false persona (the "glittering image") he shows the world and lead an authentic life while remaining a devoted cleric. An early dream sequence, Charles' first encounter with his biological father, and his attempts to relate to his parents as his authentic self are all memorable scenes. After suffering a breakdown, Charles puts himself in the capable hands of Jonathan Darrow, a charismatic monk and brilliant psychoanalyst who restores him to sanity and faith by systematically dismantling his worldly facade. I've yawned my way through many of today's "bestsellers" but I couldn't wait to crawl under the covers each night with this first novel in Howatch's Starbridge series. As soon as I turned the last page, I bought the second book in the series, Glamorous Powers, whose hero is none other than Jonathan Darrow.

This book take you on an amazing journey into the "secret life" of clergymen, particularly those of the Church of England. Somewhat based on actual clergymen in the early 1900s, it peels back layers of the outwardly displayed 'glittering images' to reveal the brokenness and waywardness of those behind the facade. However, the revelation is not done with a judgmental spirit, but in a spirit of grace, recognizing that all of us live with our own 'glittering images' which need to be dealt with in order to live an honest and transparent life. The story is a story of spiritual transformation and leaves the reader wanting to step into this journey for themselves. It clearly shows the need for an integrative approach by the church, by spiritual mentors, by the Word of God, and most powerfully, by the Holy Spirit. Howatch was able to make this journey as exciting as any journey to a foreign country. I recommend this book for those who are either traveling this path today, or considering whether to step our of their 'protective coverings' and begin a process of transformation.

This is the first of Howatch's works for me, and I enjoyed it very much. I would have liked more physical descriptions (of the cathdral, of the characters) and less psychology (read it to find out what I'm talking about here), but the author obvoiously bring s a wealth of knowledge to the table. I'll be reading more of this series.PROS: readable prose; believable characters; good pacing; escalating tension; original voiceCONS: a LOT of theology and psychology (both of which are accuarate—I have an undergrad in psychology and a masters from a fine seminary and accuracy in these things is impoartant to me)—which might very well turn off someone less inclined to thinking about God and His ways, and humankind and its foibles; I think it could have used a tough edit to pare some of the more cerebral passages involving the protagonist's "mystery behind the mystery"Recommended for those who enjoy high-quality fiction, but with a fairly cerebral bent, and who prefer their clergy to be very human.

Susan Howatch has been referred to as the modern heir to Trollope for her psychologically astute portraits of English life in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and most especially for her nine books set in the Church of England in the twentieth century of which this, Glittering Images, is the opening novel. Don't be dismayed or put off by the idea of thousands of pages to be spent with clergymen and their compatriots in the mid-twentieth century as Howatch writes wonderfully human characters and has a tendency toward the melodramatic and her books always move at a good pace. Howatch is also known for her shifting first person narratives and she does the same here but in the six Starbridge novels the viewpoint shifts from book to book rather than chapter to chapter.Charles Ashworth, clergyman, widower and professor of divinity has managed to comvince himself that his glittering image is his true self, but he is quietly desperate when he receives a commission from the archbishop of Canterbury to spy out the lay of the land on the Bishop of Starbridge, a charismatic leader with an unusual private life. This commission is the catalyst for Charles Ashworth to find himself through the bitter medicine of a nervous breakdown. The other characters in the book are revealed in minute detail as well.All of the Starbridge novels are good, but Glittering Images is among the best of the series. It is the perfect balance between character portrait and melodrama and the plot and the revelation of the central mysteries are masterfully done. Howatch's Church of England novels encompass the six novels of the Starbridge Series, beginning with Glittering Images and the trilogy of the St. Benet's novels. All are among my favorite books and I cannot recommend them highly enough to readers of sagas, historical fiction and melodrama.

Couldn't finish it. A little over 100 pages in and the pacing was just too slow for me. I did however, find myself looking up historical references to Catholicism and COE based on several references in those first 100 pages. The author must have done an incredible amount of preliminary research for the novel. The book was well written, including the dialogue. It was simply too slow for me, YMMV.

At first I found the narrative somewhat boring until realizing the narrator's insidious character: was he a "good" guy or an evil man set on destroying another for his own promotion? Suddenly the entire novel becomes fascinating as the narrator confronts this question himself. Fascinating glimpse into mankind's complex, inchoate psyche; the author has a deep understanding of the spiritual and psychological labyrinths of human souls.
