Cheap production book, with advice that you could easily find online in a blogpost or two. A lot of rambling for not a lot of content.

There really wasn't enough "meat" in the book for people that are looking to improve how they can learn faster and better.

Nothing special about this book. It was clear that the author was not an expert, but simply one who google searches out to learn. If you've spent at least a day - no, an hour - reading up advice how to learn on the internet, Read a few pages of it, and you can tell. Mediocre even as review. It's not worth more than $2.

Very good self-improvement ebook. Well worth reading.

Skilled Hands, Strong Spirits: A Century of Building Trades History, by Grace Palladino

Review

"Skilled Hands, Strong Spirits gives us a valuable institutional look at the strengths and limitations of craft union autonomy. From a contemporary perspective it is a look at the real problems inherent in 'changing to organize,' a slogan clearly identified with the current debate over labor's future. For this reason it is an important book." (Labor Studies Journal)"Throughout its history, various unions have left the BCTD [Building & Construction Trades Department] over jurisdictional and other disputes.... Institutional histories are difficult to write; it's easy to get caught up in personalities or the spider web of intrigue and behind the scenes details. Pallidino, however, handles this with grace and an over-arching view of the story. Anyone who has spent time on a construction site or a newly elected local trades officer would learn much from this very readable volume." (Grand Prairie Union News)"Grace Palladino's Skilled Hands, Strong Spirits is a comprehensive institutional history of the national building trades unions. She describes the unchanging conflicts―the debates over centralized authority vs. local autonomy, inter-union rivalries, and jurisdictional disputes―that have served to divide more often than unite this wing of the labor movement. In today's challenging environment, new strategies and approaches are more important than ever if construction workers are to be justly rewarded for their difficult and dangerous labor." (Mark Erlich, New England Regional Council of Carpenters, author of With Our Hands and Labor at the Ballot Box)"Grace Palladino's sweeping narrative is the best history ever written about the venerable cornerstone of American unionism. It is deeply informative, wisely balancing criticism and praise for the building trades while pointing the way to a better future. This is a landmark book in labor studies." (Michael Kazin, Georgetown University, author of Barons of Labor: The San Francisco Building Trades and Union Power in the Progressive Era and The Populist Persuasion: An American History)"There have been few serious studies of national construction unions since the era when labor history was a branch of labor economics. Moreover, there has been virtually no good history of construction unionism at the national level since then. Skilled Hands, Strong Spirits fills that gap admirably." (Richard Schneirov, Indiana State University)

This book is a terrific history of the Building and Construction Trades Department (BCTD), an autonomous "department" of the AFL-CIO. It is the oldest of the labor federation's so-called "departments" (which are really just federations of unions in a specific industry, affiliated with the AFL-CIO). Author Grace Palladino is an editor of the Samuel Gompers Papers. As such, she has knowledge of, and access to, the critical documents in the founding of the BCTD.Roughly two-thirds of the book covers the BCTD's first 50 years, giving slightly short-shrift to the department's second half-century. In part, this may be forgiven because those were the BCTD's most interesting decades. But it also reflects Palladino's background, the materials she has access to, and the political nature of the American labor movement (which treats its recent history as if it were a state secret, and if it got into the hands of the Russians we ALL BE DEAD...).The book goes to great lengths to situate the reader within the hothouse environment of the construction trades, which is a major help to the reader not familiar with how construction and construction trade unions function. It does a very good job, too, at outlining the changes in construction technology, and how this drove the jurisdictional battles among and growth of the construction trade unions. To her credit, Palladino also manages to include brief biographies of many of the people critical to the history of the BCTD. This is not an easy task, yet these are integreated nearly seemlessly into the text. Many of these individuals are nearly forgotten, and most left behind no memoirs, recollections or even biographical sketches. The reader practically needs a scorecard, because there are so many names and the individuals are so unfamiliar. But Palladino makes this work. It's a bit worrisome to see Palladino rely on just a few sources for the early history of the BCTD and construction unions. Notably, she leans very heavily on William Haber's "Industrial Relations in the Building Industry," Richard Schneirov and Thomas Suhrbur's "Union Brotherhood, Union Town" (a history of the Carpenter's union), and some mainstream labor and newspaper articles by notoriously self-serving authors such as William English Walling. The record gets even thinner as history marches on. Little scholarly attention has been paid to construction unions in the post-war period, and a great deal of the reference materials relies on first-person interviews with key leaders of the BCTD and construction unions. While such interviews are critical and extremely valuable, the interviewees are also notoriously political and worried about their legacies. I wish more supporting material had been included.Too, the book contains digressions on the thoughts and policies of Gompers, some of which don't seem terribly relevant. But such shortcomings can be forgiven. The historical and scholarly literature regarding the BCTD and building unions is extremely thin, and Palladino has done yeoman's work in digging out what few primary-source documents and publications remain available. The book is eminently readable, contains superb endnotes (listed by the page the note appeared on, which is a major help to the reader), and manages to evoke a strong sense of the times and people which concern the rise, growth and retrenchment of the construction and building trades. This is a major historical step forward for labor history and our understanding of the construction and building industry in the United States.

well written, good history...

Island: A Story of the Galápagos, by Jason Chin

From Booklist

Combining geology, biology, and history, this is a story spanning six million years. A fictional Galápagos island makes its first appearance as a volcanic mountain erupting above sea level. After more than a million years, the eruptions dwindle. The island supports many plants and animals, and some develop into unique species. Finally, the island slowly shrinks and sinks beneath the water. In a brief, highly visual epilogue, Darwin (identified only in the appended historical notes) visits the Galápagos Islands in 1835. Back matter includes three separate pages of information (“Charles Darwin and the Galápagos,” “The Galápagos Islands,” and “Endemic Species of the Galápagos”) but no source bibliography. Handsome full-page paintings, horizontal scenes, and many panels of small, square pictures illustrate the gradual changes in island life and in the animals physical features (finches’ beaks, tortoises’ shells) that enable them to survive. While the use of large-print sentences and small, sequential pictures is wonderfully helpful in illustrating concepts such as the island’s changing size and shape, the book’s combination of a relatively short text and a large, complex subject leaves some points unexplained or open to misinterpretation. Still, this is an ambitious introduction with noteworthy illustrations of land and animals in motion. Grades 2-4. --Carolyn Phelan

Review

“Handsome and succinct...” ―The Wall Street Journal“Chin's remarkable introduction to the Galápagos is not just a story. It's a biography. It begins with an island's "birth" six million years ago. "A volcano has been growing under the ocean for millions of years," Chin writes. "With this eruption it rises above the water for the first time, and a new island is born." In full-page watercolor paintings and small-size panel illustrations, Chin shows how the tremendous explosion leaves a mass of lava, which hardens and grows into an island. Any reader who has ever made a homemade "volcano" out of baking soda will be hooked. Writing scientific narrative nonfiction for young children is challenge enough, but creating engaging picture books for older children about the natural world isn't easy either. How to pull in the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" reader? Credit to Jason Chin, who succeeded at both in "Coral Reefs" (2011) and "Redwoods" (2009). He does so again in his latest, "Island: A Story of the Galápagos." Chin, as author-illustrator, melds geology with evolution, showing how the land and its inhabitants interact and shape one another in a natural-world interplay. We see how a few intrepid immigrant animals arrive, colonize and transform themselves to accommodate the particular features of their new home. The island grows and changes too as new eruptions lead to the appearance of other nearby islands, while eruptions on the original island grow infrequent, and then cease. ...a remarkable work and an asset for educators...” ―Publishers Weekly, starred“Chin's gorgeous illustrations include sweeping double-page spreads of the island and its inhabitants…” ―Horn Book Magazine, starred“Another superb contribution to scientific literature by Chin.” ―Kirkus, starred“...this fine introduction to [the Galápagos] will surely stimulate readers' interest.” ―School Library Journal, starred“The art is masterful in its combination of realism and artistic flow; the layout complements sweeping full-page, full-bleed landscapes with carefully controlled panel sequences that provide additional focus on a process or creature, so the evolution of larger finches' beaks, for instance, is clearly demonstrated and explained.” ―BCCB, starred review

Absolutely stunning work of non-fiction! The book focuses on the story of an island from the eruption of volcanoes to animal and plant inhabitants to evolution and to in sinking back into the sea. Each step in the 6 million year processes is accompanied by breath taking detailed illustrations that will fascinate young readers while they watch the island and animals change. This is a great piece to introduce evolution to a young audience and it ends perfectly segueing into Charles Darwin.

We live in the Galapagos part time due to my husband's work and this is the ONLY book that I have found that tells the story of these amazing islands to children in a language that is fun and easy for them to understand. We love reading this book at home over and over again. It brings the magic of the islands home when we are so far away. Your kids will love it!

I recently got back from Galapagos and got this book for my 8 year old grandson. He loved it. It was a bit dis-jointed for my taste, but he loved it. And since this is a kids book, that's all that mattered. Hence the rating.

I read this book to my second graders. The information was presented in a way they could understand. We had a Gallapagos Island project to complete.

Beautifully illustrated book that is a pleasure to read with children.

I accidentally bought this book by accidentally hitting a 1 click purchase, I would never have purchased it otherwise. It has some information that could be useful but then it limits how many times you can access it. Do not buy. Zero stars if I could mark that.

Good photos and easy to read

Beautiful and accurately informative book for kids. We bought it for our 6-year old before we traveled to the Galapagos.

This book is very useful. I am an intermediate/power user and already have some basic understanding of how the internet works and what HTML looks like. I currently make small informative web sites for different interest groups and find myself referencing this book more often than web searching. The material covered introduces some basic and intermediate concepts that then rely on the users creativity to determine quality. This very much depends on ones ability to understand new information and how to use it.Thumbs up.

Excellent book. The information was just what I needed to increase my knowledge in this area of web building.

It's okay.

I have browsed over some content. Not yet started to follow along. Once I get a time, I would follow the book. So far, I liked the format the way the content had been presented.

I bought this book to re-teach myself about HTML. It's very well written and served the purpose I bought it for.

I bought this for a college class, it was required reading/reference. Just me perhaps, but I would rather gouge my eyes out with a rusty nail- it was poorly composed, impossible to follow, and I ended up dropping the class--- after getting an A in Web Design 1, I ended up dropping Web 2, which the instructor chose to base on this horrible book at the last minute. The first semester of a new class, Web 2, and he bases it on this piece of crap.

Item does not look new. Books bent up, discolor and wrote on.

Not very happy. I ordered the 9th edition and received the 8th. I was looking at the differences and the chapters are different and there are sections in the new one that the 8th doesn't have. If it wasn't a huge difference I wouldn't of cared. But since this is for a class, it is now just a huge waste. I can't even return this book for a refund or exchanged.

A nice heavy book if not a bit small. Some good color photos and smaller b&w images. I will buy others in this series!

I wanted a book which showed photos and diagrams of Aalto's greatest houses and buildings. This book was just what I was looking for. I don't want a book with long dissertations about his life and work. Look elsewhere for that. I like this little book a lot. It's is colorful and inexpensive. I recommend it.

When they call this book "basic," they mean it. There is nothing deep or philosophical contained within these pages. Instead, this is an overview of the main works that Aalto produced during his career. Projects range from his Savoy vases to entire buildings. This is a good starting point for anyone who is interested in learning more about Aalto's work and nice to have as a basic reference. For the price, this little book can't be beat!

I love Aalto's work, but this book was just dry.I give it 3.5 only because it's meant to be an inexpensive introduction to Aalto's work, and it is inexpensive..but the writing is just dry. You really get nothing from the articles about the buildings..but it is a nice intro to the architect's life and it does showcase a few of his best works...albeit in a dry manner..If you aren't really interested in his work, this is perfect for you.But if you want a decent look into some of his buildings and materials and philosophy, then your going to have to splurge a littleB-

Thanks!

Love this series, and this is a gorgeous collection. Will be pre-ordering the rest asap.

Monster, Perfect Edition, Vol. 6 delves deeper into the secrets of 511 Kinderheim. While we have learned in previous volumes that Johan killed everyone at 511 Kinderheim years ago, we learn in this volume that before Johan killed everyone, there were graduates. In other words, another survivor of 511 Kinderheim enters the story. Most of this volume takes place in the Czech Republic in the early 1990s, where a former member of the Czechoslovakian Secret Police deals with Tenma and Grimmer. This isn't the absolutely best volume of Monster - parts of it, even when important revelations are being made, seem to plod on - but it's a necessary one to the story, so I wouldn't advise the reader to skip it. The first half of the book takes a little work to get through, but the second half is worth it. The finale of the book gave me goose flesh. If I were to rate the 11th volume and the 12th volume separately, as they were originally published, I'd give the former ***1/2 and the latter ****1/2. I'll split the difference and give Monster, Perfect Edition, Vol. 6 ****.

Volume 6 is a volume of fast change for Monster. After a long, long, long set up in the previous volume for Detective Suk and Reporter Grimmer, things finally come to ahead (with Tenma in the plot again!). Grimmer proves that he is one of the best characters in the series with these chapters, and that's all I can say without giving away the plot.

a gift

Wow, this one starts out with a bang. I didn’t even make it through page 22 before I was completely shocked. There are still three more books? Amazing. Never have I seen such a well thought out comic, except probably Death Note which was surprising me with every chapter, Monster has to be a close second. The further I get into this, the more impressed I am by the artwork. Not just the excellent character work, but also the environments. Check out page 380, marvel at the interlocking shadows and reflections, that is the work of a master. What other comics has Urasawa made? I can’t find any (in America at least), perhaps he did one masterpiece and then stopped, like Miyazaki’s Nausicaa, or Otomo’s AKIRA. Whatever, I am hooked, once you start this series, you are going to have to finish. No getting around that.

A Confederacy of Dunces, by John Kennedy Toole

Amazon.com Review

"A green hunting cap squeezed the top of the fleshy balloon of a head. The green earflaps, full of large ears and uncut hair and the fine bristles that grew in the ears themselves, stuck out on either side like turn signals indicating two directions at once. Full, pursed lips protruded beneath the bushy black moustache and, at their corners, sank into little folds filled with disapproval and potato chip crumbs." Meet Ignatius J. Reilly, the hero of John Kennedy Toole's tragicomic tale, A Confederacy of Dunces. This 30-year-old medievalist lives at home with his mother in New Orleans, pens his magnum opus on Big Chief writing pads he keeps hidden under his bed, and relays to anyone who will listen the traumatic experience he once had on a Greyhound Scenicruiser bound for Baton Rouge. ("Speeding along in that bus was like hurtling into the abyss.") But Ignatius's quiet life of tyrannizing his mother and writing his endless comparative history screeches to a halt when he is almost arrested by the overeager Patrolman Mancuso--who mistakes him for a vagrant--and then involved in a car accident with his tipsy mother behind the wheel. One thing leads to another, and before he knows it, Ignatius is out pounding the pavement in search of a job. Over the next several hundred pages, our hero stumbles from one adventure to the next. His stint as a hotdog vendor is less than successful, and he soon turns his employers at the Levy Pants Company on their heads. Ignatius's path through the working world is populated by marvelous secondary characters: the stripper Darlene and her talented cockatoo; the septuagenarian secretary Miss Trixie, whose desperate attempts to retire are constantly, comically thwarted; gay blade Dorian Greene; sinister Miss Lee, proprietor of the Night of Joy nightclub; and Myrna Minkoff, the girl Ignatius loves to hate. The many subplots that weave through A Confederacy of Dunces are as complicated as anything you'll find in a Dickens novel, and just as beautifully tied together in the end. But it is Ignatius--selfish, domineering, and deluded, tragic and comic and larger than life--who carries the story. He is a modern-day Quixote beset by giants of the modern age. His fragility cracks the shell of comic bluster, revealing a deep streak of melancholy beneath the antic humor. John Kennedy Toole committed suicide in 1969 and never saw the publication of his novel. Ignatius Reilly is what he left behind, a fitting memorial to a talented and tormented life. --Alix Wilber

When critics say Confederacy is not true-to-life because it's full of despicable characters; unlikely situations; and plot-holes, I have to wonder what kind of lives they have---because that's a near perfect description of mine. JKT is (was) a master at turn-of-phrase with a gift for writing large the theater-of-the-absurd, but that's not really why I love this book so much.I re-read aCoD every three to five years for a "humility tune up." The book is a highly polished soul mirror that's a lot more true-to-life than most people want it to be. Ignatius, or "His Royal Malignancy" as I like to call him, is the central character, and an extreme example of an arrogant bastard with absolutely nothing to be arrogant about, but the whole book is like a case study for John Calvin's doctrine of total depravity; everyone in it is---to some degree--indelibly screwed up. I suspect this is why so many people hate this book. At some point they see themselves here and realize that the depth of their own depravity is invariably greater than they suspected, realized, or certainly would ever have cared to admit. If you love Ignatius J. Reilly, there is probably something really wrong with you, but if you hate him---there definitely is. Either way, you're doomed.

If you’ve heard of this book, but not read it, you’re probably aware of the troubled circumstance of its publication. Several years after having failed to be published, Toole committed suicide. The story of the book would have ended there, except Toole’s mother found the typescript and carted it around to people in the literary community. After much persistence and not taking no for an answer, she managed to get Walker Percy to read the manuscript, and the rest is posthumous Pulitzer Prize winning history. It would be easy to dismiss the editors involved in rejecting this manuscript as grade-A lunkheads, or as the lead character (Ignatius J. Reilly) likes to verbally skewer his victims “Mongoloids.” However, one can see how said lunkheads would find this much-beloved novel risky. It’s a character-driven novel in which the lead character is obnoxious and unlovable in the extreme. Reilly is a pretentious and pedantic professorial type--verbally speaking-- wrapped into the obese body of a man-child who is emotionally an ill-mannered five year old with a bombastic vocabulary. Reilly has no impulse control, takes no responsibility, and is prone to tantrums, sympathy-seeking dramatic displays, and wanton lies. He’s the worst because he thinks he’s better than everyone despite the fact that in all ways except his acerbic tongue, he’s worse than everyone. That said, the book—like its unsympathetic lead character—is hilarious through and through. What it lacks in a taught story arc and a theme / moral argument (the latter being why the editor at Simon and Schuster rejected the book after showing initial interest in it) it more than makes up in hilarity.I should point out that when I say that this isn’t a plot-driven book, it doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have an interesting wrap-up at the end—which I will not discuss to avoid spoiling it. The plot revolves around events in the life of a lazy man-child forced to go to work. It’s not a journey of change, discovery, or adventure. While, in most cases, a character-driven story with an unmalleable lead would be a recipe for a book that flops, here it keeps one reading to the last page because it’s Ignatius’s failure to become a better man that ensures the book is funny to the end. Reilly is constantly making decisions that are both overly contemplated and yet ill-considered.The book follows Ignatius Reilly through an event that results in a tremendous loss of money for Ignatius’s mother. This forces her to finally put her foot down and insist the man—who she still thinks of as her little boy—get a job. It should be noted that Ignatius’s mother’s eventual coming around to the monster her son has become is a major driving force in the story—though we can see a distinct lack of taking of responsibility that echoes that of Ignatius, himself. Ignatius gets a fine—if lowly, clerical--job at the slowly-dying Levy Pants Company, but gets fired after he encourages a worker protest that goes awry. He then gets a job as a hotdog cart vendor—a job considered the lowest of the low by both his mother and New Orleans’ society-at-large. The latter is the job he has at the end when a final chain of events unfolds (not without tension and drama, I might add.)On the theme issue, the Simon & Schuster editor was correct that the book isn’t really about anything except how to muddle through life as a lazy, cranky, emotionally-stunted, and overly-verbose doofus. (But he was oh-so wrong about that being a lethal deficit—according to the Pulitzer Prize committee as well as innumerable readers.)I’d recommend this for any reader with a sense of humor. You won’t like Ignatius J. Reilly, but you’ll find his antics hilarious, and you’ll want to know what happens to him in the end even if he is irredeemable.

What an amazing book! I had never heard of the book until I saw it on a co-workers desk. Read the story behind the book and was intrigued.I was hooked from the first page. The book has a great flow to it with great evocative characters and wonderful dialogue. The book was written in 1963 so you have to remember it was a different world then. Helps to know a little about the social and political climate of that time period to put things in Perspective. Yes Ignatius is a jerk, but that's part of the beauty of this book.I don't understand the negative reviews and the people that say they had to labor through it or couldn't finish it. I could not put this book down.To me the mark of a great book is when you can't wait to steal away for even just a few minutes to read.Easily one of the best books I have ever read if not THE best. I'm 54 and an avid reader so that says a lot.

ACoD was recommended to me by a friend as outstanding, and i dove right in. At first i was all like, huh? But i usually stick with novels i start-- e.g., i bought The Satanic Verses a few years ago, and was pretty unimpressed and not getting it for about the first 100 pages, then i suddenly thought Oh! My! God! and started over; yes, it's a masterpiece, read it if you haven't already-- and ACoD picks up steam fast and is a delight of hilarity and razor sharp social commentary throughout. The ending is perfect. The Loyola professor who discovered this treasure wrote in the introduction how the mother of John Kennedy Toole contacted and hounded him to read her smeared carbon copy, after Toole was already tragically a suicide.
