Island: A Story of the Galápagos, by Jason Chin

From Booklist

Combining geology, biology, and history, this is a story spanning six million years. A fictional Galápagos island makes its first appearance as a volcanic mountain erupting above sea level. After more than a million years, the eruptions dwindle. The island supports many plants and animals, and some develop into unique species. Finally, the island slowly shrinks and sinks beneath the water. In a brief, highly visual epilogue, Darwin (identified only in the appended historical notes) visits the Galápagos Islands in 1835. Back matter includes three separate pages of information (“Charles Darwin and the Galápagos,” “The Galápagos Islands,” and “Endemic Species of the Galápagos”) but no source bibliography. Handsome full-page paintings, horizontal scenes, and many panels of small, square pictures illustrate the gradual changes in island life and in the animals physical features (finches’ beaks, tortoises’ shells) that enable them to survive. While the use of large-print sentences and small, sequential pictures is wonderfully helpful in illustrating concepts such as the island’s changing size and shape, the book’s combination of a relatively short text and a large, complex subject leaves some points unexplained or open to misinterpretation. Still, this is an ambitious introduction with noteworthy illustrations of land and animals in motion. Grades 2-4. --Carolyn Phelan

Review

“Handsome and succinct...” ―The Wall Street Journal“Chin's remarkable introduction to the Galápagos is not just a story. It's a biography. It begins with an island's "birth" six million years ago. "A volcano has been growing under the ocean for millions of years," Chin writes. "With this eruption it rises above the water for the first time, and a new island is born." In full-page watercolor paintings and small-size panel illustrations, Chin shows how the tremendous explosion leaves a mass of lava, which hardens and grows into an island. Any reader who has ever made a homemade "volcano" out of baking soda will be hooked. Writing scientific narrative nonfiction for young children is challenge enough, but creating engaging picture books for older children about the natural world isn't easy either. How to pull in the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" reader? Credit to Jason Chin, who succeeded at both in "Coral Reefs" (2011) and "Redwoods" (2009). He does so again in his latest, "Island: A Story of the Galápagos." Chin, as author-illustrator, melds geology with evolution, showing how the land and its inhabitants interact and shape one another in a natural-world interplay. We see how a few intrepid immigrant animals arrive, colonize and transform themselves to accommodate the particular features of their new home. The island grows and changes too as new eruptions lead to the appearance of other nearby islands, while eruptions on the original island grow infrequent, and then cease. ...a remarkable work and an asset for educators...” ―Publishers Weekly, starred“Chin's gorgeous illustrations include sweeping double-page spreads of the island and its inhabitants…” ―Horn Book Magazine, starred“Another superb contribution to scientific literature by Chin.” ―Kirkus, starred“...this fine introduction to [the Galápagos] will surely stimulate readers' interest.” ―School Library Journal, starred“The art is masterful in its combination of realism and artistic flow; the layout complements sweeping full-page, full-bleed landscapes with carefully controlled panel sequences that provide additional focus on a process or creature, so the evolution of larger finches' beaks, for instance, is clearly demonstrated and explained.” ―BCCB, starred review

Absolutely stunning work of non-fiction! The book focuses on the story of an island from the eruption of volcanoes to animal and plant inhabitants to evolution and to in sinking back into the sea. Each step in the 6 million year processes is accompanied by breath taking detailed illustrations that will fascinate young readers while they watch the island and animals change. This is a great piece to introduce evolution to a young audience and it ends perfectly segueing into Charles Darwin.

We live in the Galapagos part time due to my husband's work and this is the ONLY book that I have found that tells the story of these amazing islands to children in a language that is fun and easy for them to understand. We love reading this book at home over and over again. It brings the magic of the islands home when we are so far away. Your kids will love it!

I recently got back from Galapagos and got this book for my 8 year old grandson. He loved it. It was a bit dis-jointed for my taste, but he loved it. And since this is a kids book, that's all that mattered. Hence the rating.

I read this book to my second graders. The information was presented in a way they could understand. We had a Gallapagos Island project to complete.

Beautifully illustrated book that is a pleasure to read with children.

I accidentally bought this book by accidentally hitting a 1 click purchase, I would never have purchased it otherwise. It has some information that could be useful but then it limits how many times you can access it. Do not buy. Zero stars if I could mark that.

Good photos and easy to read

Beautiful and accurately informative book for kids. We bought it for our 6-year old before we traveled to the Galapagos.

This book is very useful. I am an intermediate/power user and already have some basic understanding of how the internet works and what HTML looks like. I currently make small informative web sites for different interest groups and find myself referencing this book more often than web searching. The material covered introduces some basic and intermediate concepts that then rely on the users creativity to determine quality. This very much depends on ones ability to understand new information and how to use it.Thumbs up.

Excellent book. The information was just what I needed to increase my knowledge in this area of web building.

It's okay.

I have browsed over some content. Not yet started to follow along. Once I get a time, I would follow the book. So far, I liked the format the way the content had been presented.

I bought this book to re-teach myself about HTML. It's very well written and served the purpose I bought it for.

I bought this for a college class, it was required reading/reference. Just me perhaps, but I would rather gouge my eyes out with a rusty nail- it was poorly composed, impossible to follow, and I ended up dropping the class--- after getting an A in Web Design 1, I ended up dropping Web 2, which the instructor chose to base on this horrible book at the last minute. The first semester of a new class, Web 2, and he bases it on this piece of crap.

Item does not look new. Books bent up, discolor and wrote on.

Not very happy. I ordered the 9th edition and received the 8th. I was looking at the differences and the chapters are different and there are sections in the new one that the 8th doesn't have. If it wasn't a huge difference I wouldn't of cared. But since this is for a class, it is now just a huge waste. I can't even return this book for a refund or exchanged.

A nice heavy book if not a bit small. Some good color photos and smaller b&w images. I will buy others in this series!

I wanted a book which showed photos and diagrams of Aalto's greatest houses and buildings. This book was just what I was looking for. I don't want a book with long dissertations about his life and work. Look elsewhere for that. I like this little book a lot. It's is colorful and inexpensive. I recommend it.

When they call this book "basic," they mean it. There is nothing deep or philosophical contained within these pages. Instead, this is an overview of the main works that Aalto produced during his career. Projects range from his Savoy vases to entire buildings. This is a good starting point for anyone who is interested in learning more about Aalto's work and nice to have as a basic reference. For the price, this little book can't be beat!

I love Aalto's work, but this book was just dry.I give it 3.5 only because it's meant to be an inexpensive introduction to Aalto's work, and it is inexpensive..but the writing is just dry. You really get nothing from the articles about the buildings..but it is a nice intro to the architect's life and it does showcase a few of his best works...albeit in a dry manner..If you aren't really interested in his work, this is perfect for you.But if you want a decent look into some of his buildings and materials and philosophy, then your going to have to splurge a littleB-

Thanks!

Love this series, and this is a gorgeous collection. Will be pre-ordering the rest asap.

Monster, Perfect Edition, Vol. 6 delves deeper into the secrets of 511 Kinderheim. While we have learned in previous volumes that Johan killed everyone at 511 Kinderheim years ago, we learn in this volume that before Johan killed everyone, there were graduates. In other words, another survivor of 511 Kinderheim enters the story. Most of this volume takes place in the Czech Republic in the early 1990s, where a former member of the Czechoslovakian Secret Police deals with Tenma and Grimmer. This isn't the absolutely best volume of Monster - parts of it, even when important revelations are being made, seem to plod on - but it's a necessary one to the story, so I wouldn't advise the reader to skip it. The first half of the book takes a little work to get through, but the second half is worth it. The finale of the book gave me goose flesh. If I were to rate the 11th volume and the 12th volume separately, as they were originally published, I'd give the former ***1/2 and the latter ****1/2. I'll split the difference and give Monster, Perfect Edition, Vol. 6 ****.

Volume 6 is a volume of fast change for Monster. After a long, long, long set up in the previous volume for Detective Suk and Reporter Grimmer, things finally come to ahead (with Tenma in the plot again!). Grimmer proves that he is one of the best characters in the series with these chapters, and that's all I can say without giving away the plot.

a gift

Wow, this one starts out with a bang. I didn’t even make it through page 22 before I was completely shocked. There are still three more books? Amazing. Never have I seen such a well thought out comic, except probably Death Note which was surprising me with every chapter, Monster has to be a close second. The further I get into this, the more impressed I am by the artwork. Not just the excellent character work, but also the environments. Check out page 380, marvel at the interlocking shadows and reflections, that is the work of a master. What other comics has Urasawa made? I can’t find any (in America at least), perhaps he did one masterpiece and then stopped, like Miyazaki’s Nausicaa, or Otomo’s AKIRA. Whatever, I am hooked, once you start this series, you are going to have to finish. No getting around that.

A Confederacy of Dunces, by John Kennedy Toole

Amazon.com Review

"A green hunting cap squeezed the top of the fleshy balloon of a head. The green earflaps, full of large ears and uncut hair and the fine bristles that grew in the ears themselves, stuck out on either side like turn signals indicating two directions at once. Full, pursed lips protruded beneath the bushy black moustache and, at their corners, sank into little folds filled with disapproval and potato chip crumbs." Meet Ignatius J. Reilly, the hero of John Kennedy Toole's tragicomic tale, A Confederacy of Dunces. This 30-year-old medievalist lives at home with his mother in New Orleans, pens his magnum opus on Big Chief writing pads he keeps hidden under his bed, and relays to anyone who will listen the traumatic experience he once had on a Greyhound Scenicruiser bound for Baton Rouge. ("Speeding along in that bus was like hurtling into the abyss.") But Ignatius's quiet life of tyrannizing his mother and writing his endless comparative history screeches to a halt when he is almost arrested by the overeager Patrolman Mancuso--who mistakes him for a vagrant--and then involved in a car accident with his tipsy mother behind the wheel. One thing leads to another, and before he knows it, Ignatius is out pounding the pavement in search of a job. Over the next several hundred pages, our hero stumbles from one adventure to the next. His stint as a hotdog vendor is less than successful, and he soon turns his employers at the Levy Pants Company on their heads. Ignatius's path through the working world is populated by marvelous secondary characters: the stripper Darlene and her talented cockatoo; the septuagenarian secretary Miss Trixie, whose desperate attempts to retire are constantly, comically thwarted; gay blade Dorian Greene; sinister Miss Lee, proprietor of the Night of Joy nightclub; and Myrna Minkoff, the girl Ignatius loves to hate. The many subplots that weave through A Confederacy of Dunces are as complicated as anything you'll find in a Dickens novel, and just as beautifully tied together in the end. But it is Ignatius--selfish, domineering, and deluded, tragic and comic and larger than life--who carries the story. He is a modern-day Quixote beset by giants of the modern age. His fragility cracks the shell of comic bluster, revealing a deep streak of melancholy beneath the antic humor. John Kennedy Toole committed suicide in 1969 and never saw the publication of his novel. Ignatius Reilly is what he left behind, a fitting memorial to a talented and tormented life. --Alix Wilber

When critics say Confederacy is not true-to-life because it's full of despicable characters; unlikely situations; and plot-holes, I have to wonder what kind of lives they have---because that's a near perfect description of mine. JKT is (was) a master at turn-of-phrase with a gift for writing large the theater-of-the-absurd, but that's not really why I love this book so much.I re-read aCoD every three to five years for a "humility tune up." The book is a highly polished soul mirror that's a lot more true-to-life than most people want it to be. Ignatius, or "His Royal Malignancy" as I like to call him, is the central character, and an extreme example of an arrogant bastard with absolutely nothing to be arrogant about, but the whole book is like a case study for John Calvin's doctrine of total depravity; everyone in it is---to some degree--indelibly screwed up. I suspect this is why so many people hate this book. At some point they see themselves here and realize that the depth of their own depravity is invariably greater than they suspected, realized, or certainly would ever have cared to admit. If you love Ignatius J. Reilly, there is probably something really wrong with you, but if you hate him---there definitely is. Either way, you're doomed.

If you’ve heard of this book, but not read it, you’re probably aware of the troubled circumstance of its publication. Several years after having failed to be published, Toole committed suicide. The story of the book would have ended there, except Toole’s mother found the typescript and carted it around to people in the literary community. After much persistence and not taking no for an answer, she managed to get Walker Percy to read the manuscript, and the rest is posthumous Pulitzer Prize winning history. It would be easy to dismiss the editors involved in rejecting this manuscript as grade-A lunkheads, or as the lead character (Ignatius J. Reilly) likes to verbally skewer his victims “Mongoloids.” However, one can see how said lunkheads would find this much-beloved novel risky. It’s a character-driven novel in which the lead character is obnoxious and unlovable in the extreme. Reilly is a pretentious and pedantic professorial type--verbally speaking-- wrapped into the obese body of a man-child who is emotionally an ill-mannered five year old with a bombastic vocabulary. Reilly has no impulse control, takes no responsibility, and is prone to tantrums, sympathy-seeking dramatic displays, and wanton lies. He’s the worst because he thinks he’s better than everyone despite the fact that in all ways except his acerbic tongue, he’s worse than everyone. That said, the book—like its unsympathetic lead character—is hilarious through and through. What it lacks in a taught story arc and a theme / moral argument (the latter being why the editor at Simon and Schuster rejected the book after showing initial interest in it) it more than makes up in hilarity.I should point out that when I say that this isn’t a plot-driven book, it doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have an interesting wrap-up at the end—which I will not discuss to avoid spoiling it. The plot revolves around events in the life of a lazy man-child forced to go to work. It’s not a journey of change, discovery, or adventure. While, in most cases, a character-driven story with an unmalleable lead would be a recipe for a book that flops, here it keeps one reading to the last page because it’s Ignatius’s failure to become a better man that ensures the book is funny to the end. Reilly is constantly making decisions that are both overly contemplated and yet ill-considered.The book follows Ignatius Reilly through an event that results in a tremendous loss of money for Ignatius’s mother. This forces her to finally put her foot down and insist the man—who she still thinks of as her little boy—get a job. It should be noted that Ignatius’s mother’s eventual coming around to the monster her son has become is a major driving force in the story—though we can see a distinct lack of taking of responsibility that echoes that of Ignatius, himself. Ignatius gets a fine—if lowly, clerical--job at the slowly-dying Levy Pants Company, but gets fired after he encourages a worker protest that goes awry. He then gets a job as a hotdog cart vendor—a job considered the lowest of the low by both his mother and New Orleans’ society-at-large. The latter is the job he has at the end when a final chain of events unfolds (not without tension and drama, I might add.)On the theme issue, the Simon & Schuster editor was correct that the book isn’t really about anything except how to muddle through life as a lazy, cranky, emotionally-stunted, and overly-verbose doofus. (But he was oh-so wrong about that being a lethal deficit—according to the Pulitzer Prize committee as well as innumerable readers.)I’d recommend this for any reader with a sense of humor. You won’t like Ignatius J. Reilly, but you’ll find his antics hilarious, and you’ll want to know what happens to him in the end even if he is irredeemable.

What an amazing book! I had never heard of the book until I saw it on a co-workers desk. Read the story behind the book and was intrigued.I was hooked from the first page. The book has a great flow to it with great evocative characters and wonderful dialogue. The book was written in 1963 so you have to remember it was a different world then. Helps to know a little about the social and political climate of that time period to put things in Perspective. Yes Ignatius is a jerk, but that's part of the beauty of this book.I don't understand the negative reviews and the people that say they had to labor through it or couldn't finish it. I could not put this book down.To me the mark of a great book is when you can't wait to steal away for even just a few minutes to read.Easily one of the best books I have ever read if not THE best. I'm 54 and an avid reader so that says a lot.

ACoD was recommended to me by a friend as outstanding, and i dove right in. At first i was all like, huh? But i usually stick with novels i start-- e.g., i bought The Satanic Verses a few years ago, and was pretty unimpressed and not getting it for about the first 100 pages, then i suddenly thought Oh! My! God! and started over; yes, it's a masterpiece, read it if you haven't already-- and ACoD picks up steam fast and is a delight of hilarity and razor sharp social commentary throughout. The ending is perfect. The Loyola professor who discovered this treasure wrote in the introduction how the mother of John Kennedy Toole contacted and hounded him to read her smeared carbon copy, after Toole was already tragically a suicide. And how he was determined not to read it; and finally, because of her relentless insistence, started it, thinking, OK! i'll read a few pages and then quit, hoping it was not JUST good enough that he'd have to read it all. The rest is literary history, and thank goodness he did read it and get it published.I started my old worn paperback to reread some time ago, then thought, no, i'm going to try to find this (used) in hardback & do it right. I found it new in an anniversary edition on Amazon, and am very happy with the purchase! "A green hunting cap squeezed the top of the fleshy balloon of a head."...

The part of the book that will resonate with anyone who has ever tried to eat a 1200-calorie diet or follow a gimmicky diet for longer than 3 days is the bathtub analogy - you can reduce your calories (turning down the water) but if you don't unclog the drain (increase your metabolism), you can keep turning the flow down all you can but the water level (your weight) is going to level-out and then start rising again... and just keep rising.Just decreasing calories is a temporary fix. You gotta move. Every single day. The book wants you to work up to 70 minutes a day, 6 days a week with a rest day. There's no magic pill, no fancy formula, and no expensive shakes. Good/Smart calories in, as many calories out in activity as you can get.Phase 1/Those first two weeks? *Not* overly enjoyable - but I experienced waaaay less rage than I did with Whole30. I didn't lose the "it could happen" 8-10lbs in 2 weeks - I lost 3-4. I'm down 14lbs after 9 weeks, way more inches than I'd expect out of "just" 14lbs, and my energy level is the highest it has ever been. The meal plan is easy enough, you just fill in the blanks. You should have 4-6oz lean protein (I'm guessing this plan might be tough for non-meat eaters?) and at least one "veggie carb" (ha) at each of your 6 meals. At up to 3 of those meals, you can add a carb. And at 2 of those meals, you can also add a healthy fat. It's easy enough to fill out the blanks and if you think about it, also very similar to 21 Day Fix portions. I have never eaten more than 5 meals (and those are really rare, it's almost always 4) of the 6 recommended daily meals. I track calories (even though the book says not to worry about it) in MFP and those 4-5 meals put me in the range of 1250-1600.Your choices are to die of boredom with repeating the same veggies over and over or quickly learn to think outside the box in phase 1. It's not your run-of-the-meal "traditional" low carb diet - those obviously just don't work - but the first two weeks are pretty lean carb-wise but you do get up to 3 servings, albeit from very limited carb choices. Happily, oatmeal is one of those and I'm a huge oatmeal fan. Also led me to discover PB2.A standard Phase 1 day for me:Bkfast - oatmeal with pb2 + either 6 egg whites scrambled with veggies or a cup of greek yogurt or cottage cheeseLunch - usually leftovers from the night before like chicken fajitas served naked or lettuce wrap-style with lots of pico and grilled peppers & onions or turkey meatballs with marinara, served over zoodles.Afternoon snack - 1 cup greek yogurt + 100-calorie pack of nutsA few dinners - chicken fajitas, meatballs & zoodles, salmon, roasted asparagus, roasted broccoli with lemon, red pepper flakes, and lots of garlic; a skinny grilled chicken parm with marinara, over zoodles, and tomato-basil-balsamic salad. Eggplant noodles with tomatoes, basil, and grilled chicken. Balsamic roasted tomatoes over salmon... There's no reason to eat plain chicken and steamed broccoli. Like, ever.Phase 2 brings on more choices, berries and sweet potatoes (yay!), avocados (double yay!), and a weekly cheat meal (aka: wine and cheese for dinner). But that cheat meal (wine and cheese and more wine) is HUGE for psych. Your closed-on-Sunday spicy chicken biscuit with honey indulgence will NEVER taste as good as it did before, though.A standard Phase 2 day for me:Breakfast - green smoothie or one of my trusty phase 1 breakfasts (but I cut the oatmeal in half and add 1/2 a cup of berries)Lunch - Turkey wrap with hummus, lettuce, tomatoes, roasted peppers, onions, and cucumber. Options open greatly with the ability to have a ww tortilla although I prefer to use the Flatout Multigrain or a ww sandwich thin because 1 of those has approx the same nutritional values. And the flat-out is large enough to cut in half.Afternoon snack - Add a 1/2 cup berries to yogurt+nuts.Dinner - Options open with addition of sweet potatoes and avocados. Use your microwave and a 4oz chunk of sweet potato to make a generous serving of sweet potato chips to serve along side real guacamole on taco night. Spiralize sweet potatoes and serve topped with bbq chicken, pico, and avocado. The book is a quick read. I'm pretty proficient in the kitchen, tailoring already-favorite recipes to be "SoS compliant" so I haven't tried very many of the provided recipes (although I am making the muffins tomorrow). If you can swing it, look at getting a spiral vegetable cutter. I have one of the fancier ones with 4 blades and it has come in handy for creating pasta stand-ins and is just overall a big help with making veggies un-boring.

My family practitioner had this book in his office, so I ordered it. This is a wonderful way to boost metabolism while dropping pounds. Just have to plan ahead to keep appropriate foods on hand as with any healthy weight loss program and slowly incorporate a little exercise starting with 10 minutes a day the first week. And I felt like I was eating all day long, only higher protein and lower carbs starting out. I lost 14 pounds in a month, then got a stress fracture while visiting my Grands in Boston, so that set me back a little. Ready to start again! I am age 65.

I am decided I have had enough! I read this and started the next week! I lost 8 lbs. in 2 weeks and now down 12 lbs. in 4 weeks! There are days I am not sure I can do it but I look at the book again and know I can. I am going out of the country in about a month and a class reunion in July that I want to look good and feel good about myself. Thank you for helping me do this! 18 more to go!!

This easy-to-follow program really does work. I've been on the plan for several months as a patient of Dr. Wyatt and I lost 21 pounds in the first 8 weeks. And I've continued to drop weight, week after week. My metabolism seems to have totally changed. The plan is based on the fundamentals of eating healthier and increasing activity... but it's done in a way that is both satisfying and fun. You eat the foods that you like by picking a healthy mix of protein & carbs at every meal. I haven't felt deprived because there are awesome recipes for each phase and there are weekly "indulgence" meals included in phases two and three. So you can have chocolate, wine, pizza or whatever it is that you're craving and you can enjoy specials meals or celebrations without feeling left out. As Dr. Wyatt says, whatever food you crave is never more than seven days away. But, if you're like me, you'll find that your cravings and taste buds totally change and you don't want the sugar and carbs as much anymore. If you want to jump-start your weight loss and drop some pounds quickly - and then transition to a plan that you can stick with - you should try Dr. Hill and Dr. Wyatt's program! If I sound like a cheerleader for this book, it's because it's really working for me and it's hard not to get excited when talking about it with others.

As a Colorado native (the book is modeled on our lifestyle) I agree with a lot of what it says. The nutrition advise seems sound (basically Paleo) The only thing is , even though I live the very active Colorado lifestyle, meeting friends for hikes, skiing, biking, rafting, etc. The books advise to get 70 minutes of exercise 6 days a week is unrealistic. I'm self employed with a very flexible schedule, but even for me, it's not a goal easily reached because of time constraints.

I love this book and have recommended to many many people. The entire program WORKS. My 2 sisters and I have been on the program for 14 weeks and have lost almost 90 pounds between us. We are in our 50's and 60's and losing weight is much harder at this age but this has worked for us!! Not only are we slimmer but our blood pressure is normal and we feel great throughout the day.

I am following this diet. I have lost 30 lbs in 6 months. I have more energy, sleep better, my skin is clear, I have lowered my cholesterol by 50 points, stopped taking certain medicines and lowered the doses on the ones I do still need. The premise of the diet is eat small meals many times a day with lean proteins, veggies and a few good for you carbs -- all from provided lists. Exercise daily. Have the right mindset going in (find your why and make it your mantra!). Don't measure calories - measure portions. And, explore the word of vegetables. It's do-able, and it works. --- I will say, this diet will NOT work as written for vegetarians. It tells you that. So, if you are a vegan, maybe keep looking.

I have been interested in learning primitive living/survival skills and decided to give this book a shot. I was happy with the "how to" aspect of the individual chapters. Each chapter has Information and pictures that detail various skills needed. I would buy this book for the first 5 chapters alone. The next 5 are a bonus, and have excellent information as well. I have used the information in these chapters to tan a deer hide, learned to build (and have used) traps, learned to make cordage! I am not a big fan of the authors writing style, but that's just me. I am used to book like the SAS survival guide.Over all, if you give the techniques shown here a try, you will learn a few things about primitive living yourself. Today I am working on knaping some obsidian with the info in this book.

Everything about this book from the description to the title to the cover photo screams "this is how you survive if dropped off in the wilderness and have to build up from the stone age. I've only skimmed the first section and have already found mentions of sand paper and refrigeration, neither of which are readily available in the middle of the woods.Don't get me wrong, there is obviously a lot of worthwhile information in here and I plan on supplementing it with my own research . . . but I shouldn't have to. A book titled 'Naked Into The Wilderness' shouldn't require a damned refrigeration unit to use. Also, the pictures are incredibly grainy (yes, considering that it's 2018 I do expect such a popular book to remaster the photos) and they spend too much time on charming little anecdotes which amounts to extra weight in my inch bag.

I found this book really good - for me, it was better than the military SAS survival books, because it gave more details, in a context and format that made better sense. I'm no expert - hence my purchase of the book - but after reading it and following along as I tried things in it, I find I am better able to perform many of the skills it covers - and thus, more confident in my ability to survive, which can help give an edge.

This is a fantastic book. Clear pictures of what is happening to help you out. I've always heard of "brain tanning". Never seen it done until now. Also has explanations of what you are doing followed by why and what will happen if you don't say manage to work all the brain oil into the leather or whatever

Good book, good ideas, very practical. He practices what he preaches. Some of the ideas are goofy like smashing a mouse in a trap then grilling it whole on the coals and eating it. Yuck. Mostly starts from ground zero which is cool but not really practical in most situations. This combines a series of books into one, which is good. Pretty well written, with a primitive twist.

Only having begun to glance through it, although i am a fast reader, this book seems to be a wealth of practical and essential knowledge about surviving, living, more of the old way. Their section on making a bow is very thorough, and the writing style is nice.

This book is an excellent beginners guide for the inexperienced outdoorsman. The book contains 10 well developed chapters that will get you well on your way to being able to "live off the land." The topics covered in this book are as follows: tanning deer skins, making fire, cordage, making a bow and arrows, making traps, meat preservation, primitive cooking methods, field dressing and butchering a deer, container making (baskets and pottery), making tools, and making shelters. Most of these topics are covered in amazing detail with plenty of photographs. The McPhersons do an excellent job of explaining the topics so that even people with no outdoor experience could perform the task almost immediately. The only exception I found was the chapter on making baskets. Even though I read the chapter several times, I do not feel I could not weave a basket (in all do fairness, it may be easier when I actually attempt the task).I can not stress enough how easy this book makes a seemingly impossible task for people who lack the basic knowledge of wilderness survival skills. The McPhersons don't just give you the instructions, they also explain the physics or logic behind what they are writing about. I recommend this book to anyone who needs/wants a firm foundation in basic survival skills.

I like this book, just wish for larger layout and larger / clearer photos
