Review

"Moisés Naím's The End of Power offers a cautionary tale to would-be Lincolns in the modern era. Naím is a courageous writer who seeks to dissect big subjects in new ways. At a time when critics of overreaching governments, big banks, media moguls and concentrated wealth decry the power of the '1%,' Mr. Naím argues that leaders of all types--political, corporate, military, religious, union--face bigger, more complex problems with weaker hands than in the past."―Wall Street Journal"Analytically sophisticated...[a] highly original, inter-disciplinary meditation on the degeneration of international power.... The End of Power makes a truly important contribution, persuasively portraying a compelling dynamic of change cutting across multiple game-boards of the global power matrix."―Washington Post"This fascinating book...should provoke a debate about how to govern the world when more and more people are in charge."―Foreign Affairs"Naím produces a fascinating account of the way states, corporations and traditional interest groups are finding it harder to defend their redoubts.... (He) makes his case with eloquence."―Financial Times"A timely and timeless book."―Booklist"Having served as editor-in-chief of Foreign Policy and the executive director of the World Bank, Naím knows better than most what power on a global scale looks like.... [A] timely, insightful, and eloquent message."―Publishers Weekly, starred review"Foreign Policy editor-in-chief Naím argues that global institutions of power are losing their ability to command respect. Whether considering institutions of government, military, religion or business, the author believes their power to be in the process of decaying.... A data-packed, intriguing analysis."―Kirkus Reviews"After you read The End of Power you will see the world through different eyes. Moisés Naím provides a compelling and original perspective on the surprising new ways power is acquired, used, and lost--and how these changes affect our daily lives."―Arianna Huffington"From his seat in the Venezuelan government to his tenure at Foreign Policy magazine, Moisés Naím is no stranger to power and influence. In this book, Naím reveals the ways in which traditional power structures, all across the globe, are transforming, and, in some ways, declining. The End of Power will change the way you read the news, the way you think about politics, and the way you look at the world."―William Jefferson Clinton"Moisés Naím's extraordinary new book will be of great interest to all those in leadership positions--business executives, politicians, military officers, social activists and even religious leaders. Readers will gain a new understanding of why power has become easier to acquire and harder to exercise. The End of Power will spark intense and important debate worldwide."―George Soros

Mark Zuckerberg hit it out of the park with this one, the first selection in his attempt to channel Oprah Winfrey with his own “book club.” The End of Power is a remarkably insightful inquiry into the limits of power in today’s wired world, when a tiny group of fanatics can upend national policy half a world away. As Naim writes, referring not just to global leadership but to corporate executive suites, established churches, and the military, “the powerful are experiencing increasingly greater limits on their power. . . In the twenty-first century, power is easier to get, harder to use — and easier to lose.”We often speak of the complexity of the modern world, but we tend to lose sight of just how complex it is. Consider this: in 1941, when I was born, world population stood at roughly 2.3 billion, whereas today we humans number 7.2 billion. Then, there was a total of 61 sovereign states on the planet. Today, there are 193 members of the United Nations, more than three times as many. But the number of players on the world stage today is far greater than that, including a plethora of global and regional organizations and what the media has come to call “non-state players” such as ISIS and Al Qaeda, all of which have come into being in the last seventy years. The upshot is that a US State Department list of treaties currently in force runs to almost five hundred pages! Add to these facts the speed and breadth of reach of information technologies and “profound shifts in expectations, values, and social norms,” and the case seems made. “But the more fundamental explanation as to why barriers to power have become more feeble,” Naim writes, “has to do with the transformation in such diverse factors as rapid economic growth in many poor countries, migratory patterns, medicine and healthcare, education, and even attitudes and cultural mores.” In the midst of all this complexity, how could anyone hope to be the master of all he surveys?Naim analyzes the means by which power is expressed, referring to them as Muscle (coercion), Code (obligation), Pitch (persuasion), and Reward (inducement). He posits three overarching phenomena that give rise to weakening the barriers to power: the More revolution (there’s more of everything now), the Mobility revolution (we and our money, not just communications, move around a lot faster now), and the Mentality revolution (“taking nothing for granted anymore”). Like any typology, Naim’s are debatable — other thinkers may carve up reality along different lines — but they ring true to my ear. After all, to note what he calls “a cascading diffusion of power,” we have only to look at the gridlock that has overtaken the political process in many nations (not just the US) and the shocking ability of micropowers — those “non-state actors” — to change the course of world history. Even “a core axiom of war has been stood on its head. Once upon a time, superior firepower ultimately prevailed. Now that is no longer true.” There are parallel developments in nearly every realm of human endeavor. For example, “the advantage long considered to be built into corporate scale, scope, and hierarchy has been blunted, or even transformed into a handicap.”These are not superficial changes or limited to one region of the globe. “[S]ince 2004,” Naim writes, “three-quarters of the world’s economies have made it easier to start a business.” Rising competition, indeed!Naim sees these developments as fraught with risk. He writes of five significant ones: Disorder (obviously), De-Skilling and Loss of Knowledge (witness Fox News), the Banalization of Social Movements (through social media, “sound bites,” and oversimplified pitches by politicians and NGOs), Boosting Impatience and Shortening Attention Spans (just look around), and Alienation (obviously). The End of Power is endlessly thought-provoking — a worthy addition to our understanding of the way the world works today.Moises Naim has an extraordinary resume. Born in Libya, educated at MIT, a former Venezuelan Minister of Trade and Industry and former Executive Director of the World Bank, he was the editor in chief of Foreign Policy magazine from 1996 to 2010. The End of Power is only the latest of the more than ten books he has written or edited.

It is definitely a book to get you thinking. That being said, I feel like it maybe is a little too dedicated to the idea that power is only tending towards fracturing and cumulative dissolution. I feel that the threat of a broader consolidation of power has only become easier in the sense of the effective power. In 1950, there was only 1 nuclear power, and now there are many. That DOESN'T mean that that single nuclear power has gotten weaker, but rather that there is altogether more destructive power in play in the world. Even in 1950, it isn't as though the US could have "conquered the world" because it was the only country with nuclear weapons- that alone wouldn't have been sufficient. The same remains true today. The USA is the strongest nuclear power, and military power, but, comparatively the other major powers have ALSO become more powerful. The difference is, that while the US wasn't capable of decimating the world single-handedly in 1950... it could now. So could Russia. So can China. Perhaps so could France and Great Britain. The OVERALL ability to project force/destruction/power has only increased across the board. The same could be said about economic power. While there was a global economy in 1950, it wasn't nearly as large and developed as it is now. That gives another lever of power to large countries which they really didn't have before. Hard and soft power have become much more interchangeable and mutually supporting. Economic sanctions in 1950 might not have had much of an effect on many smaller countries in 1950... but in the modern world? Besides countries which have explicitly prepared for them, they can be more economically devastating than an actual war, in some cases.Definitely should be read!

I hopped on the Zuckerberg bandwagon and decided to read this book. It took me a long time to finish because although the concept is engaging (like, you mean the END of power?) the writing is not so much.Chapter 4 (about the More, Mobility, and Mentality Revolutions) and chapters 5 through 9 (examples of decay in different contexts) were the most enjoyable. Naím makes a good case that power, indeed, is decaying in business, the military, politics, and elsewhere.Where he lost me was in chapters 10 and 11 where he laments the decline in the political and corporate elite's ability to get what they want. And his solutions (strengthening political parties?, putting trust in politicians?) are laughable. And his warnings about the decay of state power are overblown. His "inverted-U" graph measuring power on one axis and "political stability and economic vitality" on the other is presented without an iota of evidence that the only way to enjoy maximum stability and prosperity is to have some kind of magical balance of power that isn't too tyrannical yet not "anarchy" all at once. His final paragraphs talk about a surge of political innovations. That part I agree with. Those innovations are coming, but not in the way Naím thinks. Power will become more and more decentralized, and it's gonna be confusing and disorderly while we figure out how to fill that vacuum. But as more and more people take responsibility for themselves, they'll collaborate outside of traditional state frameworks to solve the problems we face.I gave the book three stars instead of two because I enjoyed the middle section more than I didn't like the last two chapters.

I really liked this book. All my previous efforts at trying to have a garden didn't really work out. So this is new and seems different. Although, not to say gardening isn't a lot of work and can be expensive, once you have everything you need, you're good to go. So, the bales I bought at the feed store were cheaper than what was offered online. I still need to buy other supplies mentioned in this book. I'm getting a late start, but living in the West, I have lots of sunshine ahead. Planning also for late summer and early fall planting. I will do another review in the future about whether this method of gardening works better or not.

The reviews here seem to be mostly "plan to, want to, expect to".I'll make this short and sweet...I put in two bales this year as a trial and the results were not good...there were incredibly good!!!I put in four tomatoes, three peppers, a zucchini, and a lemon cucumber on two bales, consciously trying to stress the concept to see what it would deliver.I will never garden any other way! The plants all grew rapidly and have been exuberantly productive. In addition, for the first time in 25 years living in this location (San Francisco Peninsula), I have not had to fight the slugs and snails! One tried to climb the bale but gave up. What a relief to be freed of that struggle. We're waiting for the huge crop of tomatoes to ripen while we harvest zucchini, cucumbers, and peppers.I wholeheartedly recommend Mr. Karsten's book!

This book has revolutionized how I garden. I have a 40x14 foot greenhouse and extensive outdoor gardens. However, I live high in the Rocky Mountains and my soil is nothing more than crushed shale. It costs me an arm and a leg to haul in compost every year and since my property is all pasture I don't have the luxury of leaves for massive amounts of compost. I started using straw bales for part of my garden last summer and I was stunned. It was the best garden I've ever had here. And at the end of the season we moved the wet, partially composted bales to the flower gardens and let them compost over the winter. Because the inside of the bales is warm from all the compost I was able to start plants a full 30 days before the normal season, with the help of a frost blanket on cold nights. I've brought in all straw bales for this summer and have already planted my spring crop in the greenhouse. This summer I'm adding Azomite dust and fungus to the bales, along with red earth worms. I think I'll end up planting half of my gardens in straw bales each year. Then use the leftover, partially composted bales to enrich my poor soil so I'll be gardening half in amended soil and half in bales each year. It's less expensive than hauling in compost and MANY FEWER weeds!

This book is truly a "Straw Bale Garden (SBG) for Dummies" guide! I have a large raised garden that was overcome by Bermuda over the last year, beginning with last year's vegetables/fruits. Even with a Mantis and two people, we couldn't keep it weeded. When I heard about SBGs, the concept sounded too good to be true. So, being the overachiever I am, I put heavy black plastic over my raised garden soil to fully kill any living plants in the original bed. Then I measured and built a 32-bale garden on top of the black plastic sheeting [DON'T DO THIS, per the instructions in the book! I'd already done this step prior to buying the manual!]. After placing/conditioning/planting the bales, I spread four more bales of straw over the black plastic, to try to mitigate the book-described problems with the plastic.I have to say I LOVE LOVE LOVE SBGs!! Mr. Karsten's book is truly a step-by-step "How-to...," and I recommend it above other SBG books (a few of which I bought at the same time). Please try this type of garden, using just this one book; you won't be disappointed!

4 Months after getting the book I can say this method works great. We tried the straw bale and cannot belive the results so far in 2013.. we are in Minnesota and with tilled clay soil always had a uninspiring crop. A lot of fruit on the vine and hope they all ripen and taste great..TBD..The basel has the best we ever tatsed and so aromatic..Do recommend this process and are planning to expand for 2014Oct 2 2013 UPDATE: This was the best veggie garden we have had. The only problem is that we had tried to many different plants in two straw bales.Crops that grew very tall ( Basel and tomatoes)overshadowed the smaller height plants like carrots and onions. We will extend the bales next year and have a section for smaller plants by themselves. Otherwise the plants liked the conditions. It is important to keep the watering up at ;east evry couple days.. For a first year experiment thumbs up..

Love this book! I already had it on my NOOK, but love having a book also. I planted my bale garden April 11th....my second year. Looking forward to another successful year of gardening with little effort. I have added pictures from last years garden after only one month of growing.

THIS is an amazing book and an amazing author. I stumbled upon this way of gardening on facebook about 2 years ago. I had horrible luck with all of my gardening attempts and thought "why not?!" Upon checking the book out from my local library and reading it in all of 2 days I HAD to have my own copy. After I received my copy in the mail I went to work setting everything up with was incredibly easy! And the best part...no weeding!!!! BINGO! I have NEVER had such a great return on my gardening! The things I planted kept putting out until well after the season. This way of gardening IS AMAZING! You will NOT regret getting this book OR trying this way of gardening!!!!

When I first started as a new student at Scott Sedita Acting Studios, I purchased this book to get an insight of my new teacher’s thoughts and ideas on this business. I am not green to Hollywood, so I’m usually wary of any “guide.” This book did not disappoint, and actually surprised me at how much it resonated with me. Scott provides advice and honest feedback from a seasoned professional who has actually been in the casting director and agent shoes, yet is 100% in support of the actor. The chapter on “Perseverance” was the advice I needed (especially when I first read it.) I would recommend this book to all types of actors, both green & seasoned.

An easy read. Straight forward and well written. An easy book to pick up and apply what's inside.

I don't know because I bought it for someone else.

This book is absolutely amazing. I recommend it to anyone planning on pursuing the acting life or anyone who just feels they need to brush up on their acting skills. Scott Sedita is definitely one of the most experienced experts when it comes to acting. He has lived it, he still lives it, and is sharing all the best tips and tricks to make sure you have a successful acting career. If you're serious about acting, 'Scott Sedita's Guide to Making It in Hollywood' is a MUST READ! Definnitely 5 stars! **You will definitely use this book more than just one read through!

My daughter likes this book. Thank you!!

I am not a very good reader but I am on my third read because I don't want to miss one beat of this remarkable book. This is a remarkable writer.Ed ConnellyOn YouTube "Ed Connelly" an 81 year old actor who spent over 25 years with Sydney Pollack.

Solid, well articulated career advice from a true, dedicated pro. This is an excellent book to not only read, but refer to when 'stuck'.

I am so excited to finish this book! I've started reading it and it's already motivating me. I feel as though everyone should get this book if you're interested in acting. It will make you realize whether you want to act as badly as you think you do. It's an eye-opener and will be sweet and mean to you all at the same time. Very early on, you'll realize whether you want to get into the business or not.
