Very accurate and well written, although the Spanish version remains superior.

Good buy and prompt delivery. Thank you!

I would ordinarily not review a book I didn't finish, but Rondón made two errors in the first 28 pages so grievous that I put the book down for good. First, about the debut album from Eddie Palmieri's band La Perfecta, he claims: "Eddie's older brother, Charlie, was the pianist and in charge of composing and arranging most of their repertoire." If he owned this album--one of the most important in the history of salsa--he could plainly see that Charlie wrote the liner notes and did nothing else on it.Then, a few pages later, he attributes the song "Micaela" to Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez. Now this is an error so common that Fania records itself has made it on at least one of their compilations, but Rondón should know better. There were two different artists named Pete Rodriguez on the Fania label--Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez, the salsa singer who did "Catalina La O," among other classics, and Pete Rodriguez (and his Orchestra), who was dubbed "The King of Boogaloo." It was the latter who did "Micaela."It's bad enough that Rondón, a Venezuelan, tries desperately to maintain that Venezuela was as important to the history of Salsa as Puerto Rico, but these huge factual errors (as well as minor ones--the original Perfecta included a flautist and was heavily influenced by charanga, though Rondón seems not to know this) indicate a stunning lack of knowledge about his subject and a failure to get anyone to fact check his work.

This is by far the best Android YouTube app, much better than YouTube's own app.For one, you can download almost all of the videos, even ones where the unloader doesn't want you to be able to watch. (Read below) And you can download on manyThere are a few annoyances however, snd that's why it deserves the 4 star rating. It doesn't multitask video playing, although I suspect that's Google's fault. Android "multitasking" is a lie. The organization of the videos is not very well developed. But it's fairly reliable.Hint: Use this in conjunction with the Soul Player app, the best video playing app I've found so far. When you come across a video that YouTube says you can't watch on mobile devices, either touch the green down arrow or the maximize button on the video screen. They both do the same thing: bring up the download screen. From there you can download and sometimes play the video anyway. In fact, sometimes the green arrow doesn't show up. Press the maximize window button. You can download from there.

Why confuse myself by reading this book. . .;Saying that Johnny Pacheco sounded like the Sonora Mantancera and had same instrumentation on the first 2 recordings with Celia Cruz was absurd and enough to make me skeptical of all the contents of the book, that is, not knowing what to trust. No solid ground here. Instead of bongo the Sonora had palitos or timbalitos, sort of miniature timbales played with sticks. Also, Pacheco had 2 congas, when the Sonora always had one and he played a sparser pattern than that typically used for salsa. Additionally, the bongos with Pacheco riff or speak a lot, weaving in and out of the rhythm. The paila player with Sonora played straight much more of the time. The texture of the bands was very distinct and also what some might call the feeling which includes the rhythmic feel. All salsa is relatively square or quadrato whereas Cuban son is sinuous. The rhythm is more subtle, less in your face, especially in septeto or sexteto style.Yet more . . . author says the guitar with the Sonora Mantancera was not audibile in person or on recordings. Wrong, of course. On Melao de Cana the guitar is prominent, complimenting perfectly the guajira nature of the song. And more, the trumpets with Sonora did not play improvised solos as is done in son and salsa, yet of course they did on Pacheco records.I am plagued, finally, by wondering whether this author in fact LISTENED to music.

I read this book in it's original Spanish version, so I can't comment on the translated English version now available. The Spanish version was an entertaining read with a "Sociological Perspective" about the rise of Salsa in the 60's and 70's mostly focused on the artists on the Fania label - which is considered the "Golden Age" of Salsa Music. If you're a fan of that era, it's definitely worth a read. It'll bring back lots of memories. I only gave it 4 stars because the author, as has been pointed out by other reviewers, was a little loose with the facts and sometimes gets some of the details wrong. Although overall he gets the gist and spirit of the music and the times right. The other thing is that the author refers to Venezuela quite a bit, his home country, when this story is really more about Puerto Ricans in Puerto Rico and New York who were the real stars of this music (besides Celia Cruz of course). But, cut the dude some slack, he's proud of his home country like everyone in the Caribbean is... (Que viva Colombia !Carajo!) Highly Recommended to fans of Old School Salsa.

A positive write-up in the Wall Street Journal led me to purchase the book. I was looking for multiple and unique strategies to make decisions in the face of uncertainty. I had to stop after reading 40% of the book. From what I read, the book's entire value can probably be summed up in one page. The book repeated the same thing over and over and over again just in different words with boring filler descriptions, published work of others and examples (like the AA sobriety program). It was like reading the same chapter over and over.Forget a one page summary, here is the crux of the book: Make a decision as if you are betting all of your money on your choice. Don't take shortcuts based on your inborn biases and seek contrarian opinions and experienced counsel. Don't blame bad luck on bad outcomes; figure out how you could have made a better informed decision. Oh, and surprise, surprise, join groups with participants who have had similar experiences and expertise who can critique your choices and illuminate your blindspots. There you go.

Annie Duke is best known as a professional poker player and author of poker oriented books, but in "Thinking In Bets" retraces her academic history -- it's a business book, a strategy book, a behavioral psychology book, an organizational effectiveness book and of course has residual elements of a poker book at its core. It is, quite simply, one of the best business books and actionable management books I have read in years -- it's up there with Peter Thiel's "Zero to One." If you're wondering what Pete Carroll's pass play call at the end of the 2014 Super Bowl, Steve Bartman's interference in the Cubs playoff game that eventually forced him out of Chicago, legal strategists, poker professional Phil Ivey and corporate planning have in common, buy and read, then re-read Duke's book.I digested an advanced reader's copy of the book, and it's one of the few things I've annotated as I went, making notes that I've used in staff meetings and 1:1 discussions in the last few weeks. The whole thing reads the way you'd expect and want; it's like talking to Annie Duke in your living room with the right blend of snark, deep insights wrapped in powerful examples, and force. I've read several dozen business and strategy books, and most of them paint generic pictures of leadership or organizational behavior - "Thinking In Bets" actually lays out a map for where your decision making processes (and as a result, leadership and organizational acumen) are deficient, and how to build a self-improvement plan to address those shortcomings. It's a bit of personal coaching in a purely positive direction, which is as rare as it is helpful. Here are just some of the things I took away:- Resist the urge to associate bad outcomes (Seahawks losing to the Patriots in the Super Bowl) with bad decisions (Pete Carroll's play call was backing by solid data). My concern is that as we make continued investments in data science and analytics, we will tend to use that data for "resulting" rather than supporting the quality of decisions, and we'll end up with many fewer aggressive or game-changing decisions.- We can improve the way in which we collect and vet data, and that process may challenge some of our assumptions (one of my immediate reactions was that adopting this line of thinking actually addresses the closely held belief firewall that Matt Inman addresses in his "belief" comic- Finding a peer group that can help you build a non-confrontational, non-threatening decision review team will improve your executive function and "network leadership" (which explains why there are CxO councils, nerd exchanges, and even why hackathons are popular -- they are immediate and safe spaces in which to share decisions ranging from corporate strategy to Javascript toolkit choice)- Some decision paths have hysteresis - even if you end up at the same outcome, the path you take to get there may be different and therefore your valuation of the outcome is different. The example Duke dissects is winning $1,000 and then losing $900 of it back, versus losing $1,000 and winning $900 back -- you're likely to be happier you "only lost" $100 versus the outcome where you "only won" $100.- We have to imagine the future impacts of our decisions, which involves scenario planning, careful consideration of risks and future inputs (information) we may or may not see, and some of that future-proofing involves changing our reward valuation such that we are able to break consistently bad or ill-informed decision making processes.Sound like a lot? It is. It's a dense book. I read it in parallel with a some "lighter" science fiction because I found I had to turn over some of the ideas in my mind and think about both how I've personally exhibited some of the impairing behaviors, and how I could better use these strategies in my professional and personal domains.

About a quarter of the way into this latest missive from Annie Duke I found myself wondering if she's writing for the business community but in a way that regular folks, you know ones like you and me who make decisions all the time, would get something out of or written for us but in a way that those in the corporate world would be well-advised to read. At about the one-third mark I realized (duh) that it's both and it's written with such charm and insightfulness (and humor) that it succeeds splendidly on both agendas.Duke is a rare trifecta: she has a solid academic background in cognitive psychology, she was a world-class professional poker player, and is currently a corporate and business consultant. All three of these "Dukes" are poured into the book in compelling and unique ways. I'm a cognitive psychologist and have played a lot of poker (not in her league I can assure you) and so I'm intrigued by the way she lays out the lessons we need to learn.First: in science, poker, and business you rarely, if ever, have all the information. In poker you don't know your opponents cards and you don't know what they're thinking -- including what they're thinking about what they think you're thinking. In scientific research you only know what's been discovered so far. You're ignorant about the unknown and are trying to extrapolate from current knowledge. In business and finance you unsure of the future, only know some things about markets, and work with incomplete models. In these partial information settings decision-making becomes difficult, tricky, and often contaminated by bias.Second: virtually all the interesting things we do in life are bets. Every even mildly complex task we confront or decision we make is, in effect, a bet. And bets have consequences. We take an umbrella because we're betting it will rain. We hire a new manager and are betting on her skills. We chose college A over B and bet that we'll get better education. And in these and the myriad other bets we make every day, we don't have all the facts and, because of the ways in which our minds tend to work, we often run afoul of biases and misunderstandings that lead us to make poor decisions. And Duke lays out for us the roots of these biases and trenchant advice on how to circumvent them -- with sometimes jarring effectiveness designed to force the reader to suddenly confront what they think they know but don't. Some examples: a) Try asking someone "want to bet?" when they claim something to be true. It puts them in a totally different place than when they were simply stating what they believed to be true. b) Look at decisions on the basis of how they were made rather than how they turned out -- you can win with a poor decision and lose with a good one but in the long run, it's the decision-making process that counts. c) Emphasize the need to stop thinking in certainties and recognize probabilities. d) Stop imagining situations as either-or and acknowledge that most things lie along continuums. e) Recognize when you're in an "echo-chamber" where only viewpoints you're currently comfortable with are expressed. Quoting Mill, she reminds us that truth only emerges when all sides are heard.Along the way we're treated to stories of gamblers, pain and triumph in poker games, the noodling of philosophers, judicial habits of Supreme Court Justices, corporate CEO's, betting markets, biases of social psychologists, a short but penetrating exegesis on skepticism, some advice on child rearing, and a discourse on mental time travel -- and no, I'm not going to tell you what that is. Read the damn book.Duke makes her living now as a writer and presenter of her approach to decision-making, a corporate speaker, and a business consultant. I can just imagine jaws dropping when she tells a group of high powered corporate execs that one sure way to succeed is to make sure they have naysayers in corporate headquarters, ensure that they ask for dissenting views and voices before making major (or minor) decisions.Oh, and in passing, she's an engaging writer with a sense of humor who can turn a simple setting into a hilarious little psychodrama, especially when revealing some of the weird and wonderful things that happened to her during her days as a professional poker player.

I'm slightly speechless at how deeply this book is speaking to my soul, and my lived experience as a sexual person. It's touching, heartbreaking and hits so very close to home. I love this memoir and recommend it to everyone.

It was very enlightening. Emily writes with a talent that shows that all her days are ahead of her concerning books. A must read!

Daughter read it twice and really connected to the story.

The kindle version of this book has terrible formatting. Random letters are missing from words making it very difficult to read. Also, occasionally lines appear in extra large print covering other lines of text.

Unslut by Emily Linden is part diary and part commentary, both of which I have mixed feelings about. Linden’s memoir is also part of a bigger project, one which includes a documentary and an online forum. The project is intended to provide support to girls who have experienced “slut-shaming” and “sexual bullying”, a goal which I commend. As a diary, Unslut succeeds on some levels and not on others. Many girls in middle school face almost daily mood swings, run through friends like they do clothes, obsess about their dating life, and feel as if their world as they know it is over. In just one week’s worth of entries, LInden goes from loving her life to hating her life right back to loving her life. And in a month’s worth of entries, she’s lost some old friends while also gaining some new friends. As for her dating life, the diary brought back memories both of my own “love-me” and “love-me-not” odes, as well as that of the teen girls whom I have mentored. The turmoil of an adolescent girl’s life seemingly never ends. On all these accounts, the diary succeeds.Where the diary fails is its non-stop entries about boys, boys, and boys. Even in middle school, girls do have other worries such as: their looks, their grades, their parents, their teachers, and their future. In her commentary, Linde herself refers to a summer camp where no one knew her as anything but an enthusiastic singer, suggesting that a world did exist for her outside of boys. Yet I don’t get that idea from Unslut, which is supposedly a word-by-word reprint of her diary. Instead Unslut leads me to believe that every emotion, every friendship, and every choice that Linden made arose from status in the dating world. As such, the diary feels counterproductive to the modern empowerment messages for women. With regards to the commentary, it too succeeds on some levels and not on others. Linden’s explanation of how popularity was evaluated and of what the four sexual bases meant to her generation provides helpful context to her diary. Even informing readers of such trivial matters such as what a certain candy tasted like or what certain singers sang like was interesting in its own way. On the flip side, Linden’s snarky comments and moralizing statements detracted from my ability to enjoy the emotional narrative of an eleven-year-old. Moreover, because they’re incorporated as annotations to her diary entries, the comments felt cumbersome to read. Finally, I have a caution. A quote on the back cover says that the diary should be required reading for all teens. Unless this happens with parental guidance, I disagree. First, there’s the casual use of the F word. Second, there are explicit sex scenes. Third, Linden claims there’s a double-standard, but then doesn’t consider the pressures that guys themselves might face to know if a double-standard really exists. Fourth, I’m not completely comfortable with Linden’s message. Is she saying that society should be more careful in how it discourages sexual activity or that teens should be encouraged to explore all the bases? There’s an important difference.Linden’s heart is in the right place with The Unslut project. Her online project has apparently caused many females to share their own stories of being labeled sluts. I hope that her printed memoir will stir an equal amount of discussion, for it is only in talking about why adolescents obsess about the opposite sex, desire to reach third (or fourth) base, and then condemn each other for these choices will we truly grow as a society. I'm just not sure it will.

I heard of the UnSlut Project years ago and was happy to hear that some people were doing their part to destroy stereotypes and try to change everyday discourse about how certain words define a woman and her reputation. With that said, I was a bit disappointed with this book.First and foremost, two readings are recommended of this book to get a better picture: The first to read Ms. Lindin's school days diary and the second to read the generous foot notes, which are her adult observations of those days. Those elements are the equivalent of two books in one. In the end, it can be frustrating to have to stop reading with every asterisk to get the full point of that incident. Now, the publisher did warn readers about the footnotes in their Introduction, but it was still frustrating reading despite the warning.Second, there is no clear objective in publishing these entries as they were. It's just everyday life with everyday happenings. Sure, that may have been the point - to present life as it happened and how the author dealt with things as they came along, but the reading got tedious many times along the way with that setup. You keep wondering, “Okay, what's the point again?” By the time you're done reading even a paragraph, and then the accompanying pile of footnotes, you wind up wondering what you were reading about in the first place and have to start all over again ... if you're so inclined. At best, what could have been done was to use entries with a common theme no matter the lapse in time. It would have made for a better story in the end and enabled the reader to get a clearer sense of the points the author wanted to make. It just wasn't necessary to show us everything or nearly everything. Might I suggest the power of mystery here? In the end, it's just nice to leave it to the reader to fill in the proverbial blanks. From the start, I felt as if I were thrown into the deep end and told to sink or swim … with no lessons to guide me. Yes, it's obvious that's the way a diary is structured – just jumping into things because the author knows what's what and who's who. They're not inclined to lay out a cast of characters or motivation because the former is pointless and the latter is guess work. Besides, diaries are obviously not intended for prying eyes if the author can help it.But the randomness of the entries made for tedious reading and the general layout of the book was taxing to say the least.Ms. Lindin shows us the message of what it feels like to have your reputation compromised at such a young age due to one nasty word, but you have to chop through some tall weeds to get to that message. - Donna Di Giacomo

Emily Lindin would have been better off writing a straight memoir with quotes from her journals rather than making the writings of an 11 year old child the focus of the book. There was only so much of the disjointed musings from the author's preteen years that I could take before I set the book aside. As a grandparent of a girl of the same age, I cringed...these are the years to still be a child, not dealing with which "base" is okay to go to whilst on a date. Bullying is wrong, being shamed is wrong and disturbing, but I hope this boy crazy obsession in a 6th grader is not all that common. Little kids should not have to be dealing with things my generation did not experience until we were in our late teens at the earliest. As disturbing as I find this book, I am glad that it enlightened me to the reality of life for far too many young girls. I will speak out against bullying and definitely share the book with parents of pre-teen children.

Deer, former Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs and enrolled Menominee"Sarah Deer breaks down how the United States’ addiction to violence and capitalism only sustains the subjugation and exploitation of Indigenous women. This book is amazing. I have been introduced to the concept of rape as a tool of colonization, but this book really delved into this concept and helped to finalize a lot of broad things I had previously read/learned. This book also offered some semblance of understanding for me as well - my mother's family is Native, and I can trace back the sexual abuses the women in my family have suffered to stories of my great-great-grandmother, and those are just the stories that I know. My great-grandmother was forced into the awful era of boarding schools, where she was repeatedly victimized (in fact, I don't know if she ever had a man in her life who did not assault her), and she definitely had the mindset that Sarah Deer talks about of "Just don't talk about what happened, because it will make everything worse" - when my grandmother was raped by my great-grandmother's [white] husband, she told my grandmother to try and forget it had ever happened. I can even trace this to the way my own sexual victimizations have been treated by the women in my life - and it was interesting to understand this treatment through the lens that Deer discusses in her book. This was an absolutely amazing book, and it has helped me understand the history of my family through a different lens.

"The beginning and End of rape, confronting sexual violence in Native America" is an essential book. Sarah Deer leads us into a objective portrait of the situation for Native women in America regarding sexual violence, but also gifts us with her brilliant comments, making it an accurate and entertaining piece of work for anyone interested by this topic.

Sarah Deer is an amazing writer, professor and expert on this topic and many others of criminal law. This book is a must read for anyone interested in law!

Sarah Deer is a prolific writer on such an important topic! Thank you Sarah for your ongoing advocacy of all Native women, your truth talks, and telling Dana's story in your newest book. Our family is forever grateful to you. Highly recommended.

Great book for class

I'm perhaps not as well-read in this area as I might be (further complicated by how much of the scholarship is done by a person whose credentials have been called into question,) but I'm not sure this book was doing much that was wildly new? It was presented to our class, I assume, as an alternative to that other work that has been done, and I think it sort of does that but less theoretically rigorously (unfortunately,) though her interventions in the specifically legal world are super interesting. The strongest chapter to me was her critique of restorative justice. The suggestions section felt weak but I think that has to do with how broad the book had to be; there was very little specificity, which makes sense but also felt like it didn't require an entire chapter to explain that each tribe has to come up with what works best for them?Overall, a decent primer on the legal situation regarding rape and Native women in the US, so good for folks who are looking to start somewhere.

Deer's new book should be required reading for any one working with Native women and any one desiring an understanding of the complexities of the relationship between rape and Native women and rape and Native communities. Her historical review of the impact of rape on Native women/communities should be required reading for historians and feminists. Deer's examination of the federal government's complicity in the rape of Native women and her suggestions on reform provide truth, hope, and direction. The book provides Native leaders and Native communities with both understanding and direction in dealing with the high incidents of sexual assault in Native communities. Deer interjects her own personal story into the book, which makes the book all the more interesting and readable. I highly recommend this book.

A good primer that covers the entire period of the Eastern Roman Empire.

While reading this book, there were times when I wanted to learn more about the cultural shifts, the changes in languages and art and philosophy and science of what is called the Byzantine Empire. I am not staying this isn't attended to, but it is glossed over a bit. Still, Brownworth offers a clear explication of the basic political and military struggles that go on during this period and he has a fine eye for the sensational aspects of this period, which I have to admit, I like reading about. Lots of great footnotes. I have read several books on the history of Rome by Anthony Everitt, but this is only half of the story of the Roman Empire; the other half took place in Constantinople and I have a deeper appreciation and understanding for this now. When I hear people talk about how interesting Game of Thrones is, I can now counter with this idea; any three chapters in this book have more going on in them than all of the Game of Thrones. History is much more interesting than fiction.

I've read several books on the history of the Byzantine Empire including Norwich's 3 volume opus. I would describe this book as more of a popular history than seriously academic. Not that it isn't well researched but more in its writing style which is in no way dry, but in fact very lively and engaging. This is history as it should be written in my opinion. It tells you the story, gives you the facts, and doesn't clobber you over the head with some hidden agenda like so many histories tend to do these days. The title and subtitle are strong, and present a very interesting hypothesis, however the contents of the book I found to only tangentially address this topic. It is more a fast moving and engaging survey of the length and breadth of Byzantine history.I would recommend this book for anyone who has an interest in Byzantine History, Early Christian Church History and/or the background for much of what we now see in the Middle East and Eastern Mediterranean. I look forward to reading other books by Brownworth.

Lars Brownworth has given us an excellent general account of the Byzantine Empire stretching from it's foundations at the permanent division of the Roman Empire under Diocletian and the city's founding by Constantine all the way to the final taking of the city by the Muslim Turks.I have to say that the author did a really good job of presenting the reader with the essentials of the history of Byzantium. This book is meant to present the reader with the major periods, rulers, conflicts, religious concepts and architecture of what we know as the Eastern Roman Empire. The author certainly hits the "high points" well without burdening the general reader with lists of emperors, battles and patriarchs. This is a book written for the general reader unacquainted with the later Roman Empire in the east and how it continued to survive and even thrive for a millennium after Rome itself "fell" and the last western emperor was removed from the throne. There's so much that the author covers from religion to military history that I was pleasantly surprised he was able to do it in an enjoyable fashion that never bored me with too many dates, battles, or emperors.Instead, the author covers the emperors that were important and ruled during times of success or failure that changed history, religious questions that divided the empire and battles that stand out as decisive in the long-term. Having read more in-depth works on Byzantine warfare, I think the author effectively balances giving the reader enough detail while keeping a focus on the big picture.I think the author made it an enjoyable read that kept me wanting to get to that next chapter on break or after work. This is something I value highly - not simply the knowledge to write on a subject, but also the writing ability to make that knowledge readable for the buyer. Even though I have already read other works about the Byzantine Empire, I enjoyed this work and learned more than I thought I would. This is a five-star book that I recommend to anyone interested in the other Roman Empire.

“Lost to the West” is an absorbing narrative history in the spirit of Tom Holland’s “Persian Fire” and “Rubicon,” but much better written. In Lars Brownworth’s book, one will find additional context and details for many of the familiar names and concepts related to the Byzantine Empire, including Diocletian, Constantine, Justinian and Theodora, plague, the Hagia Sophia, the rise of Islam, iconoclasm, the East-West Schism, Venice’s trading concessions and the Crusades. But the book also introduces the reader to some less familiar names and ideas, such as Julian the Apostate, Belisarius, Heraclius, the empress Irene, Krum, Basil I the Macedonian and Bohemond. Brownworth is an enthralling storyteller, and the maps, bibliography and chronology of emperors are all very useful.Although I can highly recommend Brownworth’s book, I feel there is some room for improvement. I would have liked a longer book with more details -- 300 pages is a bit short for a thousand year period. Also, the book focused primarily on conventional political and military history, and I would have liked more information on day-to-day life, how did the people live, what were the social classes like, what was commerce like, what did the people wear and eat. For example, there was little discussion of eunuchs or of the Byzantine administrative structure. Those minor concerns notwithstanding, I am very happy to have found this book and found it informative and engaging.
