this is a quote from the back cover: "The original book, published in 1902, contained more than thirty of Kipling's own brilliant illustrations, all of which have been faithfully reproduced in this Aziloth Books edition." "BRILLIANT" and "FAITHFULLY REPRODUCED" IS TOTALLY INACCURATE. The book itself is not large and the inside illustrations are ALL BLACK AND WHITE and SO RIDICULOUSLY SMALL that the reproductive quality is non-existant. The stories and poems are fine. I am SOOOOO DISAPPOINTED when the ILLUSTRATIONS, just as delightful as Kilings writings are impossible to enjoy..even the larger ones are reproduced so badly, fuzzy B&W lines. Some are as small as <1/2" by <1/1/2 " !!!

This book was released July 1, 2018 and I pre-ordered without reviews as none were available. I was surprised to find 2700 reviews on this book right after Amazon received it in mid-July, 2018. My review is for "this specific book." Amazon has generic reviews listed for this book of all the Rudyard Kipling "Jungle Books" they sell, so we customers do not know what reviews applies to what books. Amazon did this also with Rudyard Kipling's Just So Stories many books Amazon sells. Not acceptable! This specific book, released July 1, 2018, is abridged with illustrations that can help a child understand how a boy could grow up with animals in the wild. Well written story. Definitely for ages 5 and up. I will give it to my grandson, but feel I cannot give it to my granddaughters because it has various illustrations of boy nudity from the back. 1 picture of bare butt would have been enough; the other illustrations could have had foliage discreetly hiding the nudity.

“Just So Stories” is a collection of 12 children’s stories. The theme that runs through the dozen stories is that they are mostly tall-tale answers for questions that children might have. All but two of them focus on animals and nature, and the two divergent stories deal with the origin of written language. Since it’s such a small collection and the titles tend to synopsize the stories, I’ll include the table of contents below, which may give one greater insight into the nature of the stories.1.) How the Whale Got his Throat2.) How the Camel Got his Hump3.) How the Rhinoceros Got his Skin4.) How the Leopard Got his Spots5.) The Elephant’s Child6.) The Sing-Song of Old Man Kangaroo7.) The Beginning of the Armadillos8.) How the First Letter Was Made9.) How the Alphabet Was Made10.) The Crab that Played with the Sea11.) The Cat that Walked by Himself12.) The Butterfly that StampedThe edition that I have has a number of black-and-white graphics (block print and line drawn style)—one or two per story. Given the genre, I imagine most editions have some kind of pictures, but your edition’s graphics may vary. A number of the stories include short poetry—usually at the end. The poetry is part of the original Kipling product and so are likely included in all unabridged editions.I’d recommend this book for those looking for short stories that are relatable to young children.

I first encountered this story as a child, as an animated film on television. It became my favorite story, with the cadence of the narration and the wonderful animation bringing the story to life. I used to watch it every year, just like the Christmas specials and The Wizard of Oz. I've even seen it a few times as an adult, each time reliving a little piece of my childhood. When I saw this book recently, on a list of free books, I grabbed it up so I could carry this little piece around with me all the time. I was kind of afraid to actually read the story, because so often these days books and their movies don't have much in common. However, this is word for word the animated story I have enjoyed so many times; or should I say the animated film is just like the book. The language is lyrical, and there is a rhythm to the story that reinforces this quality. If I had a child, since they don't show the film any more, this would be a regular on the bedtime story list, and not just for the language. The themes of making the best of what happens to you in life, and of protecting your family, are woven throughout this story, as well as using common sense when planning anything you have to do. I'm going to grab The Jungle Book next!

This is a beautiful copy of Just So Stories. As others have mentioned, it is a small volume but the cover is embossed and the pages are gilded. The paper is thin--not due to cheapness but rather it is fine paper. It contains the original illustrations and their captions, and it is just lovely.I ordered this copy because I was unable to find the copy my grandfather had given me as a child, which was a rather sizeable volume complete with colored illustrations on glossy paper. This copy is nothing like that volume, which held up well to the repeated use of a young child. This volume is meant for the caring, gentle hands of an older child or adult. If your child cannot use tissue paper without tearing it, this is not the volume for him or her. That said, if your child loves the stories, this would be a wonderful book to give him or her when she or he grows up.

Kipling wrote for a more leisurely age. The stories make use of a wide vocabulary and literary devices such as repetition and alliteration. It is hard for a modern child to fully understand. But there is something going on at a deeper level. They love the rhythm of Kipling. The story lines are exquisitely crafted. They like to ask questions about the vocabulary. They are fascinated with the subjects of the stories. You can read the story as written, then retell it often in your own words. For instance, I told my son the story of the insatiably curious elephant child this week when he was pestering me with questions. Then pretended to pull his nose. Also at a deep level, Kipling teaches traditional values and shares deep wisdom. The females in his stories (First Woman in The cat who walked alone, the Tailor Bird's wife in Rikki Tiki Tavi) are fully drawn and quite intelligent. It is a classic.

My 4-year-old son has recently become fascinated with extreme weather, especially tornadoes. We got him this book for Christmas and he has literally read it every night for at least three weeks now and is starting to memorize it! This book touches on the science of tornadoes (nothing too complicated), clearly explains the EF levels 0-5 with great graphics (not too scary - my son loves comparing the detailed "before" and "after" pictures of destruction for each EF level), highlights a couple of major historical tornadoes and their impacts, discusses how meteorologists track tornadoes, and provides great info on what to do if you're in a tornado. It covers it all! Thanks to this book, my son has learned SO much and it's only fed his fascination of tornadoes more and more. I'm amazed that he can say words like "cumulonimbus cloud" now, he can name all the states in tornado alley, and knows exactly what to do if a tornado watch or warning is in effect. I'm so glad I found this book for him!

My son (age 5) loves tornadoes and extreme weather. He liked all the science information in this book. It explained how tornadoes form and the Enhanced Fujita Tornado Scale with both wind speeds and pictures to illustrate what damage could occur. We have a few Gail Gibbons books and I like her watercolor and ink illustrations. This book also includes information on the damage and death caused by two historic tornadoes in the U.S. This was a great beginner book for my son's interest.

We have a son who is addicted to anything related to tornadoes. This book is more informative and educational than a story book. Which thankfully, is what he wanted. It's short and perfect for our six-year-old.

I’m so glad I found this book. It’s hard to find non-fiction for the little guys. My 4 year old loves the beautiful illustrations and easy to understand broken down concepts in this book. He wants to be a meteorologist and this book is his favorite.

My 6 year old grandson is fascinated with weather and storms but primarily tornadoes. I found this book and a few others for his age and my daughter says he likes them a lot.

My nephew has recently become obsessed with tornadoes and I just had to send him this book! My sister-in-law says he loves it so much that he took it to school to share with his class!

We purchased this book after having borrowed it from the library. My 5 year old did not want to part with this book. He is fascinated by weather, and this book does a beautiful job of explaining tornadoes in an easily understandable way. The before and after pictures give a great illustration of how each tornado on the scale affects the environment differently.

Although I like the presentations of facts and the illustrations in this book I did find it to be a bit difficult for young readers (entering 3rd grade) to read independently.

In Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, Wittgenstein “deals with the problems of philosophy and shows … that the method of formulating these problems rests on the misunderstanding of the logic of our language.”Hence, the author demonstrates that the solution to most philosophic problems becomes a critical method of linguistic analysis.Tractatus begins with ontology and the state of affairs of the world is described. From there the book deals largely with the question of how language works and how it can describe the world accurately. Many forms of language (e.g. names and propositions) reflect different objective parts of reality (e.g. objects and facts). Logic is then discussed as it pertains to tautologies, contradictions and propositions. From this claim stems the conclusion that that the laws of science are not logical “laws,” but a means that we use to express reality—hence, science does not in fact explain our world but merely describes it.Although the author embraces logic, he ironically ventures into the mystical on many occasions. Some of such highlights of Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus include the proposal that most philosophical propositions are senseless (4.003), the relativity of “free” will and the lack of inner necessity of causality (5.1362), and the inability to recognize either the truth or falsehood from non-logical propositions. Wittgenstein brilliantly elaborates on widely accepted, yet wholly non-certain, everyday happenings (6.363II to 6.372) and clarifies that all ethics is transcendental (6.42I). In effect, the author posits that morality is in fact objective because subjective morality stems from happenstance, and is therefore meaningless. All potential readers should be acutely aware that this book is a very, very tough read. You may find yourself taking several minutes to read through one short page and then several hours to digest what it is you in fact just read. Either way, Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus is a terse, powerful, enigmatic and notable in its ability to whisk the dormant imagination into shape. The intellectual ramifications of being able to fully grasp and comprehend the material are limitless.

Amazing read, and recommendable. Wittgenstein tried to spell out precisely what a logically constructed language can (and cannot) be used to say. Its seven basic propositions simply state that language, thought, and reality share a common structure, fully expressible in logical terms. On Wittgenstein's view, the world consists entirely of facts. (Tractatus 1.1) Human beings are aware of the facts by virtue of our mental representations or thoughts, which are most fruitfully understood as picturing the way things are. (Tractatus 2.1) These thoughts are, in turn, expressed in propostitions, whose form indicates the position of these facts within the nature of reality as a whole and whose content presents the truth-conditions under which they correspond to that reality. (Tractatus 4) Everything that is true—that is, all the facts that constitute the world—can in principle be expressed by atomic sentences. Imagine a comprehensive list of all the true sentences. They would picture all of the facts there are, and this would be an adequate representation of the world as a whole. Tractatus, however, not only provides a way to structure our knowledge about the world, but also provokes to develop a critical contradiction with a non-factual or emotioanl sphere of human nature.

I consider this book to be very worth reading because it is associated with an extremely important period in philosophy following the work of Frege, Russell and Whitehead. I found it to be very opaque. Wittgenstein seemed to be struggling with ideas he encountered while considering the work of Frege, Russell and Whitehead. The preface by Russell showed that he considered the work to be very significant. I intend to study more about this, and will probably revise this review later. For now, I would recommend reading the Tractatus, but I did not understand it very well.I think that a primary aim of Wittgenstein in the Tractatus was to address Russell's paradox and other problems of the "language" of logic, as being developed by Frege, Russell and Whitehead at that time. This led him into deep waters with respect to the mysteries of language, and a seeming necessity to set limits, even if these limits were somewhat arbitrary. Certainly some of his insights in this regard were highly penetrating. In particular, he viewed transgressing limits where truth could be adequately assessed as entering a realm of nonsense. I feel that had Gödel's work been available at the time, Wittgenstein might have thought somewhat differently about the limits he perceived. On the other hand, Wittgenstein ignored this work later in the more mature phases of his thinking. I came away from the Tractatus feeling that while it is still of great importance, especially as it was at a historical nexus in the evolution of logic, and displays some profound insights, time has somewhat passed it by.

This appears to be the product of a poor scan and OCR. There are multiple typos per page. Why does this matter more than usual? It's Wittgentein, and he was all about how ideas can and cannot be expressed in language. By introducing errors like this, it renders it almost unreadable.

One of the most influential books of the first half of the twentieth century and alongside Philosophical Investigations sets the standard for analytical philosophy's immense influence on modern theory. Wittgenstein basically demolishes metaphysical pretensions that derive from the reification of language.
